E
VER stopped to wonder where
wed all be if it werent for the
legion of volunteers who help to
make life worth living?
Just think of it the folk who coach
the kids sports teams, knock on
doors for worthy organisations like
Plunket and the Heart Foundation,
lend a hand at charity opshops, raise
thousands at garage sales or gala
days for hospice or the SPCA...how
fantastic that people should be so
willing to give their time. They are
our true local heroes.
Anne Duncan Real Estate has
decided its time to recognise those
who go out of their way to help
others. To mark its 10th year of
business, the company is looking to
nd our most seless community
volunteers and we need your help
to identify them.
The agency, a big local contributor
to charities and community groups,
is backing the search with a range
of treats, including a winter holiday
in the sun for the most deserving
volunteer (and partner). As well, the
company has committed itself to a
night-out at dinner for a tier of other
local nominees.
Its our 10th birthday as a local
business in August and, to mark
that occasion and acknowledge the
support we have been given, we want
to recognise the great people who do
such terric voluntary work in our
community, says Anne Duncan.
There are literally thousands of
people out there who go well beyond
the call of duty, and we hope that
by shining a light on some we will
bring a greater awareness and
appreciation of their great role.
Alice Wylie, one of Mt Alberts
most distinguished citizens and a
seless servant to the community,
has agreed to join Anne Duncan in
selecting the outstanding nominees.
Nominations can of course be made
on behalf of traditional volunteers
like those who give time over many
years in the school or sports club
lunchroom, collecting for charity,
helping the CAB or Cancer Society
and coaching at club or school.
But the agency also hopes to draw
out some of those who are ying
Danna hands over the keys of
a 65-year-old family treasure
D
ANNA Martinovich is parting
company with the old friend
she rst met more than 65 years
ago. The companion, warm,
stylish and grand, came into her
life in 1948 and they became just
as close when they re-sealed the
bond after a 30-year absence.
Dannas lifelong friend is the
classic post-war home at 81 Mt
Albert Rd that her mum and dad,
Doma and Bartul Martinovich,
built for the family in 1948.
The couple migrated to New
Zealand from Croatia early last
century and were successful in
business, establishing a Federal
St boarding house and running
it with the help of their eight
children.
Danna today remembers her
teenage years working hard as
a cleaner, washer and ironer at
Federal St, and she stayed with her
mum and dad for a year or so soon
after the Mt Albert Rd home was
built. She quickly grew to love the
home.
But then she was off to the
United States to visit cousins, a
real adventure in an era without
jet planes. Initially the visit was for
just a few months, but Danna liked
what she found in San Francisco
and, while she returned to see her
parents every two or three years,
it would be 30 years before she
came home for good.
By then Doma and Bartul had
passed away, and Danna moved in
with her younger sister Fleur, who
she had spent a couple of years
with in the US.
The two sisters loved their time
together in the grand old home
with a huge section spreading
up the side of the mountain and
wonderful elevated views to the
city.
But Fleurs death last year meant
Danna, now aged 94, couldnt
manage to care for herself and
shes now moved to a rest home
where she happily keeps everyone
on their toes with her lively and
spirited personality.
Senior sales consultant John
Covich is marketing the property
(its got a wonderful feel) and
says of Danna, Shes as sharp as a
tack and great fun.
Meanwhile, the house that
became a huge part of her life
will carry on giving pleasure to
new owners after 65 years in the
Martinovich family.
The property was drawing
strong interest as this edition of
City Fringe Flyer went to press and
was due to go to auction on May
14, unless it sells prior.

HE Great Auckland Bed Race
in the Auckland Domain last
month was an outstanding success,
with around $50,000 raised for
charity. It was a fantastic effort for
a fun charity event in just its second
year.
Anne Duncan Real Estate put its
corporate weight behind the day
and staff contributed a portion of
sales commission for the month to
help the Hospice movement benet
by several thousand dollars.
The team including Anne Duncan
consultant Jamie Morrison at
the helm won the award for most
funds raised (more than $20,000)
and Jamies efforts in supporting
the cause brought him a special
contribution award.
Planning has already started
for next years event and the
organisers are keen to hear from
schools, businesses, sports groups
and other organisations who want
to get involved.
A chat with
Damian Sheridan
What would others say about
you? The less said the better
probably, but I would like to
think they say Im easy going and
considerate of others.
Virtues and vices? To always try
and help others and nagging
my wife Elaine about always
having to help others.
What brightens your day?
Waking up is always bonus. My
little nephew Darragh never fails
to put a huge smile on my face.
What really annoys you?
Laziness and tardiness.
The thing youve always wanted
to do? Play the guitar. Elaine
bought me one. I just havent
got into it yet - probably down to
laziness. Oh!! Thats one of my
dislikes...next question please!
A lesson youve learned
about life? Always observe
and consider before making a
judgment.
Who inspires you? I look close
to home for inspiration. My
sister-in-law Maria has raised a
beautiful daughter, runs her own
business, owns her own home -
all of this achieved on her own.
She is ghting a serious illness
but still has the most positive
outlook and is always helping
others. Now thats inspiring.
Who would you get to share
your dream dinner table? David
Attenborough, Stephen Fry and
Keith Richards.
My favourite. food: ham, egg
and chips; tipple: anything wet
with a good alcohol content; TV
programme: anything on wild
life, and Breaking Bad; movie:
Pulp Fiction;

Really, we want to hear about
people who deserve greater

do what we can to help others, but

go a bit further than that the people

A
S Auckland City valuers begin
their countdown to the three-
yearly assessment of capital values,
the wider Mt Albert area is certain to
show a big jump over 2011 levels.
The CVs are used to set rates and will
be revealed to home-owners later in
the year, based on values assessed
on July 1.
Latest statistics from QV suggest
Mt Albert values are up on average
around 36 per cent over the July 2011
capital values putting the suburb
in the top bracket of Auckland
performers. Other big local movers
are New Windsor, Waterview and
Kingsland, all up by more than 45 %.
Values in Blockhouse Bay,
Morningside, Avondale, Mt Roskill,
and Sandringham have risen on
average by between 30 and 40 per
cent in the same period.
An increase in CV doesnt directly
relate to a rise in rates. But a new
capital value that represents an
above-average rise for Auckland
will probably carry with it a more
expensive rate demand. Conversely,
someone with a property showing a
lower-than-average rise in capital
value may pay a little less in rates
next year.

NNE Duncan Real Estate is
celebrating its 10th birthday with
a makeover to take it into its next
decade.
The company headquarters at the
corner of New North Rd and Alberton
Ave have been given a facelift, with a
bright new paint job - part of a fresh
design to the brand of one of the
citys most successful local agencies.
As Anne Duncan says, August
marks our 10th year in business and
we thought itd be great to have a
bright new look to begin the next 10
years of our life.
