No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a
harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it (Hebrews 12:11).
These words are given to us directly from the Bible, the messages that dictate our moral
compass. For those who believe, they act as a guide that will lead us to a better person. Why
then, has the act of spanking children become shunned upon and in some states even
prohibited by law? If our bible tells us to do one thing, why has the law argued against it? The
act of disciplining children through spanking isnt only supported by the bible; it is also
supported through logic.

The reason behind the belief that spanking is abusive is completely
flawed, spanking leads to well-respecting children and children who are not morally corrupt.
Some parents feel that spanking children only teaches them to fear their parents. While
this idea might play a small factor as to why children wont act upon obscene behavior, the
more appropriate factor is the fact that children understand the difference between right and
wrong. It enforces children to know how to handle a situation regarding pressing decisions that
will recall their moral compass. The punishment of spanking leads to children who can interpret
between right and wrong.

For years studies have proven that spanking children is unnecessary and can cause
issues regarding the child, but have you ever considered that there is a flaw to the research?
Author, Latoya Clark, writes about the flaws to the studies in her article Putting a Whooping on
Spanking Statistics. Clark argues, Most spanking research that tries to make the case that
spanking is harmful fails to distinguish: between abuse and spanking between the ages of
which a child was spanked and between the quantity of the spanking (para. 2). Many
researchers fail to differentiate between abuse and spanking. Any type of slapping is regarded
as a spanking when, in all reality, most parents would agree that spanking is the act of hitting a
child on the bottom using minimal force. Researchers also fail to distinguish between the ages
of which a child was spanked. For example, most spankings take place when a child is young
(between the ages of 2-6) to teach them right from wrong.
2
What researchers use as statistics
for their studies are teens that are still spanked. Finally, researchers fail to show the difference
between the quantities of spanking. For instance, researchers tend to use children who are
spanked multiple times per year (one study even showed 156 times per year) rather than use
children who are spanked a more reasonable amount (the average is approximately 10 times
per year). When using an extreme definition of spanking, the results, that spanking is
considered unnecessary, would hold true. However, when using a more realistic statistics of
this punishment, spanking children would prove to be a punishment that is efficient.
Children who are spanked are proven to be better behaved. Jeffery D. Sims writes about
the effects of spanking in his article To Spank or Not to Spank. He states that We developed
a successful balance of respect for the adults in our lives and motivation to stay on the right

path as we grew into adult hood (para. 1). Children who were spanked when they were
younger are proven to be more respectful towards their elders. They tend to know right from
wrong and act upon those ideas. According to many researchers, one shouldnt spank their
children because Violence cannot be fought with more violence. If this idea held true, why
then, do we use violence to teach our criminals that have done crucial acts, such as murder,
that they have done wrong? The answer to the question is simple; it teaches them right from
wrong.
Along with moral values, spanking teaches children to enforce their values.

Since early
2000s, statistics have supported the non-spanking act. There has been an immense
movement toward refraining from spanking as a punishment. Since this drastic change, the
amount of: teen pregnancy, violent behavior, and drug/alcohol use has spiked. Could this
correlation be a coincidence? Credible author of Debunking Parenting Myths and Advice
believes so. She states, Parents today are spending so much time trying to control their kids'
behavior that they are not spending enough time teaching their kids morals and values (para.
2). Children nowadays are not being taught the morals and values needed for a successful life.
They arent getting the proper lesson of right and wrong and are learned the principle of I do
what I want. Is this the type of lesson parents are insisting on instilling into their children? The
overwhelming drop in spanking has proven to be an unsuccessful attempt to better our
societys children.
Spanking is regarded as a form of abuse in society today, but should it be? The flaw to
the conflicting argument, the effect of respectful children due to spanking and the

coincidence of the correlation between the impeding punishment and decrease in moral
values has led the belief the spanking should be enforced. No discipline seems pleasant at the
time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those
who have been trained by it (Hebrews 12:11). Spanking isnt always the easiest punishment to
enforce as a parent, but through struggle this act can have impacts on children that will
encourage successful future parents through generations to come.
