WEST AFRICA ADVANCED

SCHOOL OF THEOLOGY
2010 PRAYER GUIDE
The prayer of a righteous person is
powerful and effective.
James 5:16

Bernie & Brenda Smith

West Africa Advanced School of Theology

“Training for Missio Dei through Pentecostal Servanthood”

The purpose of WAAST is twofold. First, WAAST seeks to train

pastors and Christian workers to understand God's Word and the
missio Dei—the mission of God—and to assume their roles in that
mission. Second, WAAST seeks to encourage and equip them to
minister in the power of the Holy Spirit and with a servant heart.
Join us this year as we pray for WAAST and its training ministry,
from the central campus in Lomé, Togo, outward. The first entry
presents two ongoing needs: personnel and partnership. Jesus prayed
for laborers and for unity. We ask that you remember these two
critical needs throughout the year. We will then focus on:
● the challenges in Africa that demand Pentecostal Bible
training (Jan. 10–31)
● the personnel and physical needs at WAAST's central
campus (Feb. 7–21)
● the needs of the students (Feb. 28–March 14)
● the students and graduates serving in various types of
ministry (March 21–May 30)
● other ministries based on the WAAST campus (June 6–27)
● the 10 WAAST extension centers and the AG work in the
host countries (July 4–Sept. 26)
● the AG work in the other countries in the region WAAST
serves (Oct. 3–Dec. 26)
● annual events, on the weeks they occur

Thank you for praying with us!

About WAAST and AGGST

v The Lomé campus is actually home to two schools: the

undergraduate West Africa Advanced School of Theology
(WAAST) and the Assemblies of God Graduate School of
Theology (AGGST).
v WAAST opened in 1971. Its 3-year program offers a post-
secondary diploma and a bachelor of theology degree.
v AGGST opened in 1994. Its 4-year program offers a master of
arts degree in missiology.
v WAAST and AGGST have expanded to serve some 20 nations
of West and Central Africa—a geographical region as large as
the U.S., including Alaska and Hawaii (see map). More than 9
million AG believers live within this huge area.
v WAAST and AGGST courses are taught in both French and
English.
v WAAST courses are given in block sessions twice a year.
AGGST students meet for 10 weeks each summer.
v Ten extension centers make it possible for students to attend
block sessions closer to home. They spend their last semester at
the central campus and graduate together.
v Since 1994, when the first extension center was opened,
enrollment has grown more than 10 times.
v Most WAAST and AGGST students are already well
established in ministry and are married with children. Many
hold leadership positions in their national churches.
v WAAST and AGGST are training the trainers! Several
countries in the region have many more churches than trained
pastors. WAAST and AGGST play a critical role in supplying
qualified teachers and administrators for Bible schools all over
West and Central Africa.

Praise God for Answered Prayer!
Thank God with us for answered prayer in these areas:
2009 Graduating Class: More than 70 WAAST students from 10
nations and 16 AGGST students from 8 nations received degrees in
November and are now moving on to new challenges.
New extensions: The 2 newest centers, in Niamey, Niger, and Dakar,
Senegal, are off to a good start, with 10 and 12 students respectively.
These centers are vital, as both countries have a Muslim majority
population.
Radio Jesus Loves You: Plans are set to put RJLY online in January.
“The Frequency of Hope” can then reach Togolese and other Africans
wherever they live.
Pentecostal Revival: At a continent-wide meeting in March 2009,
African AG leaders declared a “Decade of Pentecost,” a concerted
effort to promote Pentecostal renewal throughout this coming decade.
The goal is 10 million believers filled and empowered as witnesses
for God's glory.
Adjunct Faculty: We thank God for the core of much-needed,
faithful visiting professors who serve WAAST. All courses in the
coming spring session will be taught by non-resident professors—14
Africans, from 4 nations, and 2 Americans.
Benin: God is calling more workers, and they are seeking training.
Enrollment at the main Bible school has doubled in the last 3 years, to
more than 120. WAAST and AGGST have prepared several teachers
for this school.
Senegal: The Assemblies of God of Senegal has set a goal of
establishing a Christian primary school in every major town. AG
pastors are allowed to use the Bible as the textbook for weekly
morality lessons in the public schools.
Togo: The new Bible school in northern Togo now has a well to
provide fresh water. Funds are being raised for a solar system to
provide electricity for lights and fans so students can study more
effectively.
January 3 This week pray concerning
CHALLENGES FACING WAAST

Wherever we travel throughout the region WAAST serves, we see

former students and the work they are doing, at both national- and
local-church levels. The impact of this school is truly amazing!
More than ever WAAST faces a double challenge: for resident
personnel to help with the logistics of running a campus with 10
extensions, and for increasing partnership as the national churches
served share the burden of providing personnel and finances.

Please pray
v for wisdom as the school seeks a new president.
v that the Lord would provide workers to serve at the central
campus, particularly bilingual workers and a business manager.
v that national churches will respond to the need and send
personnel as missionaries to work at WAAST.

January 10 This week pray concerning

THE CHALLENGE OF SYNCRETISM

WAAST's Class of 2009 called themselves “Proclaimers of the Living

Word.” Preaching the pure Word of God, animated by the Holy Spirit,
is critical in meeting the challenge of syncretism, the mixing of
Christian doctrine and pagan beliefs. Pastors and believers alike come
under tremendous social pressure to follow traditions involving other
spirits. Some are tempted to compromise for personal gain. Church
leaders need the guidance of the Holy Spirit and solid Bible training
to discern and reject false doctrines, and to teach their people to do
likewise.

Please pray
v that the Holy Spirit will help pastors flee these temptations, and
convict those who are preaching “another gospel” (Gal. 1:6).
v that God will help believers to stand firm against ungodly
traditions and temptations.
v that these believers may be a testimony to those who pressure
them to compromise.
January 17 This week pray concerning
THE CHALLENGE OF ISLAM

Mosques dot the north-south road in Togo—mosques we

did not see a few years ago. Islam is growing throughout
Africa, luring young people and the poor with promises
of a better life. In some areas churches and Christians are
targeted. Turning from Islam to Christ is social suicide, as
the family rejects the new believer. Each Friday, the Muslim holy day,
WAAST students pray for Muslims. We invite you to join your
prayers with ours at 9 a.m. EST.

Please pray
v for patience and wisdom for believers as they show Christ's love
to Muslim neighbors.
v that the Lord will meet the needs of those who have left Islam.
v that God will reveal himself through dreams and miracles to
Muslims who are truly seeking Him.

January 24 This week pray concerning

THE CHALLENGE OF AIDS

More than 22.5 million people in sub-

Saharan Africa are HIV-positive.
Because of the fear and stigma AIDS
brings, many deny the disease or reject
the victim. Children are left to care for
younger siblings. Spirit-filled believers
set an example of compassion toward patients and families, teach
moral living to prevent AIDS, and help orphans and communities
devastated by their losses. They can offer what secular agencies can't:
Jesus and hope for eternal life.

Please pray
v that the Lord will bless the efforts of AG churches and believers
as they confront this issue and educate others.
v that many HIV+ people will find the Lord in their distress.
v for efforts to care for the many AIDS orphans.
January 31 This week pray concerning
THE NEED FOR PENTECOSTAL RENEWAL

In March 2009, the Africa Assemblies of

God Alliance declared this new decade a
“Decade of Pentecost.” Africa's 60,000 AG
churches are mobilizing to see at least 10
million believers Spirit-baptized and
empowered as witnesses. Launch Day is
Pentecost Sunday, May 23. As pastors and
leaders, our students and grads will be
involved in many ways in these efforts. For
up-to-date information, see:
www.decadeofpentecost.org.

Please pray
v that God will bless this initiative and fill and empower those who
seek the Baptism.
v that we at WAAST will be used to further this effort.
v that millions will be reached, new churches planted, and
missionaries sent within Africa and around the world.

February 7 This week pray for

RESIDENT STAFF ON THE CENTRAL CAMPUS

Currently 4 American and 2 African families reside on campus. Later

in the year the composition will change as we return from itineration
and another family leaves. Visiting professors from many nations and
short-term helpers come and go throughout the year. Each shift in
personnel brings a new dynamic with its blessings and challenges as
we work together.

Please pray
v for strength, unity, and flexibility for each one as our ever-shifting
team works to run the school smoothly.
v that those who come to help short-term may see and be blessed by
the good example of the WAAST resident team.
v for good relationships between resident personnel and the local
school employees.
February 14 This week pray for
ADJUNCT FACULTY

WAAST and AGGST are increasingly dependent on visiting

professors, who come to teach for 2 or 3 weeks. Many of these
teachers are WAAST graduates and AGGST students or graduates.
This diversity gives students a broader perspective of God's work and
an appreciation of other cultures. We thank God for this growing body
of qualified teachers for both the main campus and the centers.

Please pray
v that the Lord will strengthen those who leave their own duties to
come teach.
v for funds for travel; air travel within Africa is expensive, and the
cost of travel from the U.S. prevents some from coming.
v for still more qualified teachers for these programs.

February 21 This week pray concerning

CAMPUS IMPROVEMENTS

Some construction and renovations are needed to meet

the physical demands as WAAST hosts more students.
An older 2-story dorm needs a facelift and a new roof
($20,000). A second story needs to be added to a
classroom building ($90,000), and another
classroom/office building needs a new roof ($20,000). The school
also needs better and cheaper Internet access. New study resources,
especially in French, is an ongoing need.

Please pray
v for funding for the renovation and construction projects.
v for funds for Internet fees, and for a satellite hookup.
v for more study resources; WAAST must build up its library to
better serve the doctoral program hosted on the campus.
v for wisdom in planning for future growth.
February 28 This week pray for
THE NEW SESSION AND NEW STUDENTS

Students are now arriving for the 9-week session that begins Monday.
They will take 6 courses during this time. First-year students in
particular face new challenges. Some have been out of school for
several years and must learn to study at the college level. Many have
left their families behind. For many, adjusting to a multicultural
environment and new ideas is a challenge. All the students, both new
and returning, need strength for the intense schedule.

Please pray
v for health and strength for both students and professors.
v for new students as they adjust to the rigorous study program,
encounter new ideas, and relate to others from different countries.

March 7 This week pray for

STUDENTS’ FINANCIAL NEEDS

Like so many in college, WAAST and AGGST students have financial

needs. Many are pastors with meager salaries, and they struggle to
find funds for school. Travel expenses for some are high. Some
receive help from their churches or a partial scholarship. For most, it
is an opportunity to learn again of God's faithfulness and miracles of
provision, both for themselves and for their families while they are
away.

Please pray
v that the Lord will work miracles of provision for students who
do not have the funds, and for their families.
v that these testimonies of provision will build their faith and
encourage others to pursue God's call and to trust Him to meet
their needs
March 14 This week pray for
STUDENTS’ FAMILIES AT HOME

One of the greatest stressors for students is

concern for their families as they are away.
Sometimes the wife struggles as she takes on
much of the ministry responsibility, children
fall sick, or issues arise in their church or
ministry. Those left behind need God’s
protection, and those here need peace of mind to study well.

Please pray
v that the Lord will ease the homesickness many of the students
feel, and give them His peace
v that the Lord will give peace and health to family members.
v for the smooth running of the churches in the absence of their
pastors.

March 21 This week pray for

NATIONAL CHURCH LEADERS

As we visit various places in West and

Central Africa, we find more and more
Assemblies of God headquarters staffed
by alumni and students of WAAST and
AGGST. Their “training for missio Dei
through Pentecostal servanthood” is
changing attitudes and strategies at the
national level. These leaders are moving
their churches toward more Spirit-empowered evangelism within their
countries and toward missions efforts in other lands.

Please pray
v for God’s wisdom for these influential leaders.
v that under God's guidance these leaders will continually
emphasize the Holy Spirit and outreach, thus helping the growth
of the churches to continue.
v that leaders may effectively inspire and train those under them.
March 28 This week pray for
PASTORS AND CHURCH PLANTERS

Most WAAST and AGGST students serve as pastors in their

respective countries. Because of the shortage of pastors in many
areas, some must oversee several churches. Many train lay workers to
help them. Other students are planting churches in new areas.
WAAST's flexible format of 6- and 9-week sessions allows pastors to
immediately apply and teach what they have learned to lay workers
and to their congregations.

Please pray
v that the Lord will bless and keep these churches during their
pastors’ study leave.
v for these students/pastors as they train effective lay leaders.
v for those pioneering new churches, that the Lord will help them
establish a solid foundation and give them favor in the
communities.

April 4 This week pray for

MISSIONARIES

WAAST and AGGST emphasize the responsibility of

every believer in completing missio Dei—the mission
of God. Many are replacing the “receiving” mentality
with a “sending” mentality, and graduates are
answering God's call to serve as missionaries in other
African nations and in other parts of the world. Some
are burdened for Muslims and go to difficult places.
The teaching they have received in WAAST's
multicultural setting helps them as they adjust to new
cultures and challenges.

Please pray
v that the Lord will call still more students into His harvest field.
Often they can go where American missionaries cannot.
v for strength and peace for these missionaries in times of difficulty
and even persecution, and that their lives will be an example to
those around them.
April 11 This week pray for
BIBLE SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS AND TEACHERS

More than 6,000 students are enrolled in 100 AG Bible schools and
extension programs throughout West and Central Africa. Many of
these are led and staffed by WAAST and AGGST graduates. Some
graduates have begun new training programs or schools. Graduates
from non-AG denominations apply their knowledge to improve their
own church's training programs. It's still not enough! More well-
trained teachers and administrators are needed as the churches and the
need for leaders grow.

Please pray
v for those graduates working in Bible schools and training
programs as teachers and administrators.
v that the Lord will call more workers to attend these schools.
v that the Lord would meet the material and financial needs of these
schools and their students.

April 18 This week pray for

WOMEN IN MINISTRY

Patience and Grace are planting a church in an

animistic area of Ghana. Marie leads Women's
Ministries in her country. Cécile teaches
WAAST courses and helps her husband lead
their 1,000-member church. Cecilia serves with
her family as a missionary in Cameroon. These
women and many others are passing on to others what they learned at
WAAST. Their lives encourage other women—and men—to seek
God and learn of Him

Please pray
v for the women studying at WAAST and AGGST, that God will
bless their various ministries and their families.
v that the Lord will provide for still more to come for training.
v that churches who are not as open to women in ministry will
recognize the women's mandate to serve in the churches.
April 25 This week pray for
YOUTH PASTORS

African youth today are confronted with

many issues that the global village has
brought, such as gay marriage and Internet
pornography. Poverty tempts many to join
Islamic sects or follow other false teachings
that promise fortunes. They need pastors who can
model godly living and ground them in the Word of
God. Young converts may be rejected by their
families. Some WAAST and AGGST students and
graduates work with youth in the high schools and
universities, showing them the Way to right living and true riches.

Please pray
v for the young people of Africa as they face temptations from the
world, that the Holy Spirit will draw them to the Lord.
v for the youth pastors as they teach these young people and as they
help those who face opposition from their families.

May 2 This week pray for

CHILDREN’S WORKERS

The children sing loudly and proudly, then

perform a skit for the church on Children's Day.
They invite their friends to kids camp and learn
to pray and tell others about Jesus. They are
tomorrow's church leaders, and some WAAST
and AGGST students and grads specialize in
ministry to kids. Some train children's workers.
Others teach in schools or reach kids through
relief efforts and ministry to AIDS orphans and street children.

Please pray
v that the Lord will give these pastors and workers strength and
wisdom as they minister to children.
v that many kids will come to the Lord and become witnesses to
unsaved family members.
May 9 This week pray for
ASSEMBLIES OF GOD GRADUATE SCHOOL OF
THEOLOGY

WAAST students have just left, and AGGST students are moving in!
While they take courses over the next 10 weeks, others who have
completed the classes are at home working on their thesis projects.
Visiting professors from several African nations and from the U.S.
come to teach 2-week-long courses. Many AGGST graduates go on to
teach in Bible schools and also help provide more qualified professors
for WAAST's extension centers and central campus.

Please pray
v for the students as they juggle studies and church and family
responsibilities.
v for more qualified African professors to teach at this level.
v for travel safety and health for teachers and students.
v for funds to help with scholarships and travel for teachers.

May 16 This week pray for

WORKERS AMONG MUSLIMS

Some WAAST and AGGST students and

graduates work in Muslim areas. Some grew up
in Muslim homes themselves and are well
equipped to speak and minister to them.
Because of opposition against Muslims who
convert, these workers and their congregations
often become responsible to care for outcast
believers. As Islam tries to claim more power,
land, and souls in West and Central Africa, they must minister in the
power and wisdom of the Holy Spirit.

Please pray
v that God will protect and give favor to workers and believers in
Muslim areas and help them to be effective witnesses.
v for the salvation of the families of Muslim-background students
and alumni; this is a heavy burden many carry.
May 23 This week pray for
WORKERS IN HOLISTIC MINISTRIES

In Côte d'Ivoire, a WAAST graduate heads the AG's Social

Development department. In Sierra Leone, another works daily with
drug addicts. Others work with AIDS victims, refugees, orphans, and
street kids in various nations. Their churches help provide for people
affected by natural disasters or war. The list of needs is endless, and
these pastors and workers model Jesus' compassion for the whole
person and teach others to follow His example.

Please pray
v for God's wisdom and resources for these ministers and their
churches as they help those affected by life-changing problems.
v that others will be touched and learn to show compassion. Many
tend to ignore or fear people with AIDS, drug addicts, and others
with such problems.

May 30 This week pray for

WORKERS IN PRINT AND ELECTRONIC MEDIA

Christian literature from the Western world does not

address African issues in an African way; Africans can
best meet this need. WAAST and AGGST students
learn to thoughtfully write for their people. Some
students and grads are now publishing tracts,
newsletters, magazines, and books. The Internet has opened up new
avenues for them to share the gospel in text, audio, and video. Others
work to translate the Bible and other materials. Some spread the Word
through radio and television.

Please pray
v that more will find means to spread the gospel in relevant ways
through publishing on paper and electronically; funds are often a
serious obstacle.
v for those working in Bible translation and literacy training.
v for those working in radio and TV, broadcasting church services
and other Christian programming.
June 6 This week pray for
WAAST INTERNATIONAL CHAPEL

The WAAST International Chapel on campus

welcomes more than 2,500 adults and 800
children each week. As many as 2 million
people join the services by radio. Every day
people come for prayer meetings, Bible studies,
and departmental activities. The building,
extended to hold 3,500, is almost completed. Even during the
construction, the congregation increased their giving to missions and
to other needs, and God is blessing them.

Please pray
v for strength and wisdom for Pastor Jean Bandé and his staff.
v that this church will continue reach people from all walks of life;
professors, doctors, business people, students, market vendors,
and the unemployed all worship here together!

June 13 This week pray for

RADIO JESUS LOVES YOU

A man about to hang himself hears a

message of hope and finds Jesus. A
paralyzed woman is healed as she listens to a
peaceful song. Many “attend” the Chapel
and discuss doctrinal and social issues via
Radio Jesus Loves You, broadcasting from
the WAAST campus into Togo, Benin,
Ghana, and Nigeria, and sharing the gospel in several languages. Only
eternity will reveal the impact of “The Frequency of Hope.”

Please pray
v for the director and staff and for those who preach on the radio.
v for favor from the government, that they will authorize another
frequency so RJLY can broadcast into northern Togo.
v for funds for more equipment as it needs to be upgraded or
replaced; thanks, STL, for your giving!
June 20 This week pray for
THE TABERNACLE FABRICATION PLANT

This on-campus factory produces steel

tabernacles to erect in 6 target countries:
Togo, Benin, Ghana, Burkina Faso, Niger,
and Côte d'Ivoire. Plans are to fabricate and
erect 100+ tabernacles over the next 4 years.
Once the trusses and roof are up, the
receiving church or Bible school finishes the
building as they please.

Please pray
v for more funds and teams to build and erect tabernacles.
v that God will give favor at the port as materials are shipped in.
v for the team leaders as they work with the national churches.

June 27 This week pray for

PAN AFRICA THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY

Classes begin this week for 36 students in

PAThS, the first AG doctoral program for Africa.
Most students are key AG leaders in their
countries, and their studies influence how they
will lead their churches in fulfilling the Great
Commission. Some are finishing their
dissertations and will graduate on November 6
on the WAAST campus.

Please pray
v for wisdom for the PAThS leadership and faculty as they teach
these influential leaders.
v that national churches in Africa will catch the vision to support
this school in prayer and finances as they send their leaders for
training.
v for wisdom concerning opening a branch campus in East Africa.
July 4 This week pray for
THE EXTENSION CENTER IN ANGOLA

An elderly woman brings her charms to a pastor to

be burned—but the pastor backs away. He has not
been taught that Jesus has authority over witchcraft.
The AG in Angola has grown to nearly 2 million, but
few pastors have biblical training. Hundreds are
now studying basic “Roots of Faith” courses to ground them. The
WAAST extension center in Angola, launched in 1999, has graduated
about 15 pastors. The center is not currently operating, however, and
the need is greater than ever.

Please pray
v that God would provide someone with a vision to coordinate this
center.
v for the hundreds of workers being trained through “Roots.”
v that some Angolan graduates can come for the M.A. program to
become still better equipped for training.

July 11 This week pray for

THE EXTENSION CENTER IN BURKINA FASO

The Assemblies of God in Burkina Faso is more

than 1 million strong. The churches send out
scores of foreign and home missionaries.
However, more than 2,000 churches do not have
trained pastors, and leaders express concern that
the numerical growth is greater than spiritual
maturity. Four of the 7 Bible schools are
directed by WAAST and AGGST graduates, and most grads are
involved in some form of training. Some 70 students are enrolled in
the WAAST extension center here.

Please pray
v that more laymen who also serve as pastors will give themselves
to full-time ministry.
v that the Lord will bless efforts to bring people to spiritual
maturity, an objective more important than numerical growth.
July 18 This week pray for
THE EXTENSION CENTER IN CAMEROON

More than 60 students are studying in this center. Since

1997, more than 80 have graduated from WAAST and
several from AGGST. The Full Gospel Mission, with
whom we work, is excited about church planting and
missions, and graduates are helping to fuel and expand
that vision. They are involved in Bible school training,
missions, evangelism, university outreach, and other ministries, as
well as pastoring churches.

Please pray
v that the Lord will bless and provide for those in missions and
evangelism, and that more will be called and equipped. Many of
the 1,300+ churches are without trained pastors
v that the Lord would call more workers to the Muslim and other
unreached peoples in the north.

July 25 This week pray for

THE EXTENSION CENTER IN COTE D’IVOIRE

WAAST’s first extension center opened in 1994 in

Daloa, Côte d’Ivoire. About 30 students now study
in this center. The AG recently celebrated 50 years
and is growing, but much remains to be done. Islam
claims nearly 40% of the people; others practice
animism. Some WAAST and AGGST graduates staff the 3 Bible
schools here, training about 300 new workers. Others are pastors and
missionaries. Some hold key positions in the national church. The
superintendent and our extension coordinator, both graduates, are
studying in the PAThS doctoral program.

Please pray
v that the Lord will bless this center and that more can study here.
v for more workers among Muslims peoples.
v for pastors and churches as they face the challenges of false
doctrines and ethnic tensions.
August 1 This week pray for
THE EXTENSION CENTER IN THE DEMOCRATIC
REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO (DRC)

More than 60 students are taking courses at this

center, based in Kinshasa. Many pastor churches in
this city of 8+ million. Some work further inland, and
a few work in the war-ravaged eastern part of the
country. Classes meet on the grounds of a 6,000-
member church pastored by the general superintendent of western
DRC. The 2 extension coordinators and the superintendent were
WAAST students when we first arrived in 1994. It is a joy to see the
impact of their ministries in this great nation.

Please pray
v for financial provision for students, especially for their final
semester in Togo.
v that more from the central and eastern parts can attend WAAST.
v for our coordinators as they do their doctoral studies in addition
to pastoring and teaching.

August 8 This week pray for

THE FINAL SEMESTER
The dorms and cafeteria are
bustling again as students settle in.
First- and second-year students will
stay for 6 weeks. Third-year
students are here for 13 weeks.
Many of these are from the
extension centers and have come to
Togo for the first time. They will
finish their courses and write a 50-page research paper before they
graduate in November.

Please pray
v for health and strength for the students, especially those in the
third year, during this long, intense session.
v for their families at home.
v for the professors and thesis mentors.
August 15 This week pray for
THE EXTENSION CENTER IN GHANA

More than 30 students attend this center, run by a

graduate. Ghanaian WAAST and AGGST alumni serve
as pastors, missionaries, and key national leaders.
Others direct or teach in the 3 AG and in other Bible
schools in Ghana. Half of the 2,700+ churches lack a
trained pastor. Syncretism and the prosperity gospel are
ongoing temptations which must be counteracted by sound biblical
doctrine.

Please pray
v that the Lord will open the doors for those who desire to attend;
many lack the means.
v that He will call more to give themselves to the work of the
ministry.

August 22 This week pray for

THE EXTENSION CENTER IN NIGER

Ten students are studying in this center, now in its

second year. The general superintendent of the
Niger AG and a missionary from Togo, both
WAAST graduates, are running the center. The
Assemblies of God was officially established in
this Muslim land only 4 years ago, and already
there are more churches than pastors! Many young people make up
the churches, and AG primary schools and kids camps reach out to
little ones from Muslim families.

Please pray
v for the growth of this new center and for its positive impact.
v for this young national church as it grows and reaches out.
Already it has formed a missions department.
v that God will call young people to full-time ministry; many of the
50+ churches have no trained pastor.
v for the ministry of the AG primary schools and kids camps.
August 29 This week pray for
BRENDA

Brenda will turn *ahem* this week (September 4).

September 5 This week pray for

THE EXTENSION CENTER IN RWANDA

This center was opened in 2003 to serve workers from

Rwanda and from the eastern part of the Democratic
Republic of the Congo. Both areas have suffered war—
and great church growth. The center lacks a
coordinator and remain on hold for now, but those who have
graduated are a blessing to their churches. A Rwandan grad is serving
as a district superintendent and national secretary for the Rwandan
AG. Some grads from Congo are in national leadership; others are
training pastors in the Bible schools.

Please pray
v for a coordinator and the reopening of this center in God's time
and at the location that can best serve the potential students.
v that the Lord will bless the WAAST graduates as they serve the
churches and Bible schools in Rwanda and eastern DRC.
September 12 This week pray for
THE EXTENSION CENTER IN SENEGAL

Twelve pastors are studying at the new extension

center in Dakar, Senegal, the westernmost city on the
continent. They serve in a difficult environment.
Senegal is 95% Muslim, and church growth is slow.
These workers are needed to build up strong congregations and to
teach others in the Bible institute. Reaching kids is also a priority, and
the Senegal AG is working to establish a primary school in every
major town.

Please pray
v that the Lord will open the door for more students from Senegal
and neighboring lands to come to this center.
v for efforts to start primary schools, and that many children will
come to know Jesus.
v that God's Spirit would touch the hearts of the staunchly Muslim
Wolof people and of the other peoples of Senegal.

This is Bernie’s birthday week (September 22)!!!

September 26 This week pray for
THE EXTENSION CENTER IN SIERRA LEONE

Some 30 pastors are studying at this WAAST

extension center, based at the Bible school in
Freetown. Their challenge: to reach people bound by
the influences of witchcraft, secret societies, Islam,
and the lingering effects of civil war. Graduates are
involved in teaching, pastoring, church planting, and social work. One
serves as assistant director of City of Rest, a drug-rehab ministry. The
extension coordinator recently graduated from AGGST and the AG
superintendent is completing his studies.

Please pray
v for the pastors and churches as they minister to hurting people,
and for more missionaries to help them.
v that the Lord will help believers reach out in love to Muslims;
many are open and will visit churches.

October 3 This week pray for

BENIN

Benin, Togo’s next-door neighbor to the east, is a center

of voodoo, and Islam is growing. Thankfully, so is the
influence of the Church! The AG counts at least 1,500
churches—but fewer than 1,000 trained pastors. Two
Bible schools are training more. WAAST and AGGST
graduates serve as national leaders, pastors, and trainers.
Many churches are emphasizing the baptism in the Holy
Spirit and are seeing children and adults alike filled.

Please pray
v that the Spirit will call and empower more workers, especially to
go to the Muslim areas in the north.
v that Spirit-filled believers will lead others to Jesus and freedom
from evil spirits.
v for our 4 U.S. missionaries and the African missionaries working
here, in the Bible schools and in church-planting.
October 10 This week pray for
CHAD

Some 65% of Chad's people are Muslims; others hold

to traditional animistic beliefs. About 100 Assemblies
of God churches stand as lights in this desert land,
but there are only about 75 credential pastors. Nearly
20 future pastors are studying in the Bible school in
Moundou. One of the teachers is a WAAST graduate from Togo, and
one future teacher, a Chadian, is now training at WAAST. Another
graduate directs the radio station and pastors the only AG church in
the capital city.

Please pray
v for the churches and for the Bible school as it trains Chadian
workers.
v that more Chadians will be able to attend WAAST. Some go to
the Cameroon extension center.
v for God's workers as they face much spiritual opposition.

October 17 This week pray for

CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC

Seventy percent of the people of CAR attend

Catholic or Protestant churches. However, many
people mix their Christian beliefs with traditional
spirit worship. More than 15% of the population are
Muslims. Because of the political instability, the AG
has no US missionaries here. AG statistics list 12 churches and 9
pastors. One evangelical Bible school is training workers. WAAST
has a few graduates from CAR, and more are needed.

Please pray
v that the AG churches will stand out as a testimony of hope in a
land of political uncertainty.
v that God will call more laborers, both African and American, to
work in this difficult field, and open the door for them to go.
v that more students from CAR can attend WAAST.
October 24 This week pray for
CONGO

A missionary to Congo notes that people are hungry

for God but struggle to leave their old ways. Previous
Marxist rule and war have left painful scars. But
more than 50 AG churches are offering the Spirit of
freedom. Leaders are working to plant 100 new
churches in 10 years. A women's center teaches the Bible and crafts to
young ladies who might otherwise turn to prostitution. One Bible
school and an extension program train pastors and evangelists.
WAAST graduates are in leadership and teaching positions. One
Congolese pastor will graduate from WAAST next week.

Please pray
v that the Lord will guide and bless the church-planting efforts.
v that God's Spirit will draw weary, struggling people to himself.
v that more students from Congo will be able to attend WAAST.

October 31 This week pray for

GRADUATING STUDENTS
Saturday will be a great, noisy day on the campus for WAAST and
AGGST graduates—and for the first graduates of PAThS. Family and
friends will celebrate their grads' accomplishments with music,
speeches, food, and gifts. Some graduates will return to their home
and ministries; others will move on to new assignments in Bible
schools or mission fields.

Please pray
v for the safety of family and friends traveling to Lomé.
v that unbelievers who attend will be touched and respond.
v that the Lord will use these graduates to reach and train others
and thus multiply the numbers coming into His kingdom.
November 7 This week pray for
WAAST LEADERSHIP

Today WAAST's multinational Board of Governors finishes its annual

2-day meeting on campus. Throughout the year a local Board of
Administration meets frequently. Together these men and women
make the policies and decisions that govern and direct WAAST.
Extension-center coordinators are also meeting to plan and deal with
issues. These leaders all need wisdom to work together and to discern
God’s will and direction as the school expands.

Please pray
v for the members of the Board of Governors and the Board of
Administration, that they might be sensitive to God's direction
and open to new and creative solutions to the challenges that
come with growth.
v for profitable meetings for the extension center coordinators as
they discuss how to make the centers still more effective.

November 14 This week pray for

EQUATORIAL GUINEA

Equatorial Guinea is the only Spanish-speaking

country in Africa. Most people mix Catholics beliefs
with traditional spirit worship. AG missionaries from
the U.S., Latin America, and Togo work here. The
national church strongly emphasizes the baptism in the Holy Spirit
and is working toward its goals of planting new churches, sending
and supporting 2 missionaries, and developing its training programs.
A new Bible school complex made of steel tabernacles was erected
this year to better serve the students.

Please pray
v for the national leadership and churches as they move forward in
the Spirit's power to reach out, plant, and send.
v for the 2 Bible schools as they train for the harvest.
that more students from EG could receive further training at
WAAST to then train their own students more effectively. Two
are currently studying at the Cameroon extension.
November 21 This week pray for
GABON

Eight Gabonese pastors have studied at WAAST to

better serve the Pentecostal churches in their country.
One student pastors 5 churches! Their challenge is
great, as many mix beliefs in Christian/Catholic
doctrine and animism. In the midst of this, the
Pentecostal churches are growing and showing the Truth. Several AG
churches in Central Africa have been working to plant churches there.
One Bible school is grounding new pastors in the Word.

Please pray
v for our graduates as they pastor Pentecostal churches and
counteract the false teachings of Catholicism and traditional
religions.
v that more Gabonese will be called and trained for full-time
ministry, and that more can attend WAAST.

November 28 This week pray for

GUINEA

Though freedom of religion is allowed, previous

years of Marxist rule and pro-Muslim policies have
influenced many against Christ. Of Guinea's 47
people groups, 29 are considered unreached. Most of
these follow Islam or traditional religions. AG
missionaries from France, Canada, Nigeria, and Côte d'Ivoire are
working here. One Bible institute is training 10 pastors, and children
learn about Jesus in AG primary schools. We praise God that one
pastor from this nation has begun studies at WAAST.

Please pray
v for the few AG pastors and churches in Guinea, that through them
those in false religions will see Jesus.
v that more Guinean pastors might receive training at the new
WAAST center in nearby Senegal or in Lomé.
v that the Lord will bless the efforts of the missionaries and protect
them in unstable times.
December 5 This week pray for
LIBERIA

Liberia was the first AG mission field in West Africa.

Disease, traditional religion, secret societies, and civil
war have made Liberia a difficult place to work.
Disunity in the national church remains a serious
problem. Despite this, churches are growing. Many are
led by untrained pastors. WAAST graduates have returned to serve in
the churches and the 2 Bible schools.

Please pray
v for the leadership of the Liberia Assemblies of God, that they may
show love, unity, and humility before all and find healing.
v that the Lord will provide for pastors who need training.
v for more workers in the less-reached north.
v for a new radio station and other projects of the AG.

December 12 This week pray for

MALI

The desert country of Mali is 90% Muslim. Work is

slow and challenging, but AG pastors are beginning
church annexes in difficult bush areas. The youth
ministry is growing, and children are finding the Lord
through School of Light, an AG primary school. A
Bible school is training 9 new pastors. WAAST graduates serve as
national church leaders, teachers, pastors, and church planters.

Please pray
v that the Spirit would call more young people into full-time
ministry. Poverty pushes many to seek secular education; pray
that God's call would overpower the call to riches.
v that some pastors would be able to attend the new center in
Senegal.
v for favor on the churches as they seek land, which is hard to find
and expensive.
for more workers in the northern part of the country.
December 19 This week pray for
NIGERIA

At 76 years old, the Assemblies of God in

Nigeria has more than 2.5 million members
and 12,000 churches, and adds 400 churches
yearly. Ten Bible schools are training more
than 2,000 workers. Still, some 60 people
groups remain barely reached. Unbalanced
prosperity teaching and other false doctrines
challenge the true gospel. Islam is strong in the north. WAAST and
AGGST students are taking solid biblical training back to meet these
challenges.

Please pray
v for our students and graduates as they work in churches, Bible
schools, universities, and with other people groups.
v for Spirit-led pastors and teachers as they present true doctrine.
v for those working in areas of Muslim-Christian conflict.

December 26 This week pray for

OUR HOST COUNTRY—TOGO

Togo is smaller than Indiana, but the AG counts

more than 1,300 churches, as they constantly
mother new works. Many need a trained pastor.
Nine lay-training programs around Togo have
trained hundreds of laypersons to help. Several
WAAST graduates serve in the main Bible school.
A school in the north, led by 3 graduates, focuses
on the Muslim and other unreached peoples there.

Please pray
v for more workers among the unreached peoples in west central
Togo, and for their provision and protection.
v for land for churches in this area, and that cement churches can be
built; straw churches are easily burned down by those opposed to
the gospel.
v for funds to build a professors residence at the northern school,
and for the completion of a women's dorm at the main school.
