Science Lab report: Best heat insulator

1. Aim= the aim of this experiment was to discover which is the best heat
insulator/preserver. We wanted to see if either cotton, paper, nothing or a towel will
keep hot water warm the longest.

2. Hypothesis= I hypothesize that the cotton wool will be the best heat insulator. This is
because cotton is not dense at all and air can go in it and air is an amazing insulator.
Since air is an amazing insulator it will help the cotton keep the water warm.


3. Variables= independent: The cotton, the towel, the temperature and 200 ml of water.
Dependent: Amount of water, beginning temperature and the size of the Beeker.
Constant: The 250 ml Beaker, the aluminum foil and the thermometer.

4. Materials= the following materials are the ones I used in the experiment.
Four 250ml glass Beakers.
800ml of 65 degrees Celsius.
Cotton wool.
28 by 10 cm towel.
28 by 10cm paper.
4 thermometers.
A water heater.
A pencil.
1 A4 paper.
Three rubber bands.
4 10 by 10cm pieces of aluminum foil.
5. Method=
.The first thing we did was cut the towel, paper, and cotton to 28 by 10cm
. Rap them around the 3 of 4 beakers with rubber bands
.We then cut a sheet of aluminum foil in 4 parts of 10 by 10 cm. and put one next to
each beaker
.We go to the water heater put 800 ml of water to heat it up to 65 degrees Celsius
. Very quickly we fill up each 250 ml beaker to 200 ml and cover each one with the
aluminum foil and a thermometer in each (we pierce the aluminum foil with the
thermometers and into the water.)
. We check the temperature of each one, every minute for 20 minutes and wrote it
down.
.Finally we got the conclusion. The Cotton wool was 59 degrees Celsius, the towel was
55 degrees Celsius, the paper was 53 degrees Celsius and the beaker with no insulator
was 49 degrees Celsius. This means my hypothesis was correct.
