Dear Students,

In continuation of our discussion in front of the institute building I have received four representations
from many students of 4th year B Tech class. The following are the contents of their representations
and my response to them. I am sure these will clarify all the issues.

Representations # 1 & 2

In representation # 1, Sri D.S. Mandavi has complained that as a consequence a miscalculation of his
CGPA (5.98 instead of 6.02) by the Academic Section he has to go for the 9th semester. In
representation # 2, students of 4th year B Tech have requested a viable solution to the issue. I will
need some time to collect and examine the documents and I shall circulate my response to all
students tomorrow. Please let us wait till then.

Representation # 3

Sri Anshuman Mishra, writing on behalf of all final year students, states their desire for “complete
revocation of the Disciplinary Committee Recommendation till the new guidelines for its functioning
are established”, as assured by me. First, let me point out that at no point I assured a “Complete
Revocation”. No order has come out ; the question of revocation does not arise. I, however, assure
you that I shall not sign the recommendation when given to me on the punishments. But, since there
appears to be no disagreement on the facts, let us not repeat the process of examining the students.

The senate will debate in its next meeting an agenda item on a discipline manual containing, among
other things, a list of offences, punitive measures and related guidelines. The award of punishments to
Sri Mangaraj and Sri Pathy will wait till the guidelines are worked out by the senate. Let us work
together to collect views of all students and pass them on to the Senate.

Representation # 4

The B.Tech final year students have represented that the percentage of student representatives in the
Disciplinary Committee should be at least 40 %. I promise to place it before the senate, which has the
authority to maintain discipline on campus as per NIT statutes. My own view shall be to make it 40%
rounded to the nearest whole number. It should contain representation from a wider cross section of
students.

Let us appreciate that the offence-punishment system of our institute is not to settle scores but to
serve as a deterrent against frequent occurance of undesirable situations. In most cases the victim of
an indiscipline act is a fellow student. The law enforcement machinery of any institute helps every one
in the institute. Let us work together to make it effective in helping us.

The above is for information of all students.

With best wishes,

Sunil Kr Sarangi
