1. SCOPE This Guide covers requirements for horizontal, enclosed single and double helical, one- and two-stage parallel shaft speed increasers and reducers, and related systems, for use in general services. It is not intended to cover gears that are integral to other equipment, or to epicyclic gear assemblies. Generalpurpose gears are used to drive equipment that is usually spared, is of relatively low power level, or is in a noncritical service. Typical applications for which this Guide is intended are: Cooling tower water pump systems Utility and certain process blower and boiler fan systems Chemical processing equipment Other general-purpose equipment trains

This Guide is not intended to apply to: Special-purpose gears Specialty gears used in critical polymer processing equipment (extruders and compounders)

Gears supplied in accordance with this Guide shall be limited in power rating to the range of 19 KW (25 hp) to 1500 KW (2000 hp) with pitch-line velocities not over 61 meters per second (12,000 feet per minute). 2. Paragraph 2.8.2.4 (New Paragraph)

Gear materials shall be checked for proper hardness after rough machining. For gears above 750 KW (1000 hp), the gear supplier shall submit chemical and physical property test certificates for all forged gear blanks. These certificates must be based on test pieces attached to, or taken from the gear forgings, and must accompany the forgings throughout the heat-treating cycle.

Paragraph 2.8.4.2 (Addition)

Unless otherwise specified on the Data Sheets, only gears above 1120 KW (1500 hp) rating, with speeds in excess of 3000 rpm, shall have provisions for API 670-type radial vibration and axial thrust probes. (Probes, proximitors, connecting leads, and monitoring devices shall be specified separately by the user.) The shaft surface beneath the probe location shall be unplated and ground smooth. All gears above 37 KW (50 hp) shall be equipped with provisions for mounting accelerometer pickups.

Paragraph 2.10.1 (Addition)

Either hydrodynamic or antifriction radial and thrust bearings may be used in gears with a rated horsepower less than 150 KW (200 hp). Hydrodynamic type bearings shall be used in gears equal to or greater than 150 KW (200 hp).

MOBIL ENGINEERING GUIDE EGE 15-B-22 1993

PAGE 4 OF 7 JANUARY 1993

Bronze-backed thrust bearings are not acceptable. For special hot service conditions, both the metallurgy of the bearings, as well as the recommended lubricant, shall be described in the suppliers proposal for specific approval by Mobil.

Paragraph 2.10.3.2.2 (Clarification)

Equal thrust load capability shall be a requirement for double helical gears. Hydrodynamic thrust bearings may be either the tilting-pad or tapered-land type.
