Introduction

The Problem of Violence over Children in Bulgaria by Z. Korueva, V. Radeva, and T.
Taneva is an academic article that talks about child abuse not only in Bulgaria but also
worldwide. The article informs about the different types of violence and how it is
constantly increasing. Rhetorical appeals are used in the article to present research
concerning this alarming issue.
Purpose and Audience
The primary audiences for this article are adults with children or future children. The
article was written from Trakiiski University with the purpose to demonstrate the
consequences of violence on children. However, it was also intended for individuals all
around the world interested in such important problem. There is permission for individual
use of the article from the Trakiiski University.
Logos
The logos appeal in this article is well used. The authors used supporting evidence from
institutes, organizations, and universities. The organization of the article is professional and
it quotes definitions accordingly to what it is referring, which makes it easy to understand
the whole idea. It introduces violence as one of the most discussed problems around the
world and talks about a study by UNICEF that confirms that there is no place around the
world without violence, which supports their logical thinking of putting violence against
children to the focus of public attention. They relay in the psychological studies to state that
abusers come from abusive homes, and also to explain why victims are afraid to report the

committed crimes. The article also provides data from the World Health Organization for
support. One million children perish every year due to their parents cruelty and two
million are maimed for life (Korueva, Radeva, & Taneva, 2013). Nevertheless, the
article also talks about progress that has been made. They showed results of reduction of
violence in the families and increment of peoples sensitivity in 2011, due to the
interference of state police, using statistics from the National Statistical Institute. The
article has a variety of sources to express statistics and supporting facts that make it very
reliable.
Ethos
Ethos appeal is used in this article as well. Ethos is a basic approach that is usually used as
a mode of persuasion that focuses on the character of the writer or speaker. In other words,
the character of the writer is the basis to help the reader decide between agreeing or
disagreeing with what he is arguing. This help the writer show that he is a credible person
whom his readers can believe and leave doubts behind. The author of the article tries to
show his credibility in his words Statistics using data from various national and
international organizations and other similar studies, including data used in Bulgarian The
Bulgarian Telegraphic Agency reports that in 20-40% of the cases of sexual abuse against
children at the age of 12-18 , and references with the intention of wanting to support their
study and that people can see that what you're saying is true.
Pathos
The emotional appeal, or pathos, in this article might deliver different effects on the
audience. For people that have children or might have suffered from any form violence, this
article might have had a higher impact on, highly increasing the interest in this article. On

the other hand, people who perhaps have never experienced any form of violence or dont
have children might not have such an impact, decreasing interest in this matter. The use of
pathos is displayed throughout the article in the way the author portrays the negative effects
that are caused by child abuse or violence. The children victims of violence usually
experience conflicting emotions they are town between fear and attachment, between
security and insecurity, love and hate, despair and the hope that the violence wouldnt
happen again. This experience is the cause for many pathological consequences for the
childs development. (Korueva, Radeva, & Taneva, 2013) This strong insert in the article
demonstrates the strong emotion towards the consequences that are caused by violence
done to children. This point is emphasized throughout the article and is intended to
captivate the audiences attention. It makes many people, including myself, realize the
suffering and humiliation these people go through due to the mistreatment and abuse that
are caused by people who dont think of the consequence. Whether it is someone who may
or may not relate to the topic, as we read this article, one perceives the emotional appeal
that the author displays by mentioning and arguing all of the negative effects that will be
caused to abused children.
The authors of the article The Problem of Violence over Children in Bulgaria
provided a very detailed article that was supported by very strong sources. They used
factual resources and noticeable emotional support to gain credibility to us, the audience.
The article is one for any kind of person to read and understand thoroughly. It clearly
makes a statement on the rate that child abuse has increased over the course of time, and
also all the negative effects that are produced when this is done. The act of abusing an
individual, in any way, is simply unaccounted for. All the physical and psychological

damage is irreversible and should be replaced by mutual respect and communication. The
authors recognize this problem, use this article to argue against child abuse, and defend the
rights every person who is sexually, psychologically, or physically abused have.
