Election Central

New Poll Show Democrats May Have a Chance in Southern Races In an
NBC News-Marist poll of registered voters in three southern states released
this morning, Democrats are shown with better numbers in the race for the
Senate. Lets take a deep dive into numbers from the poll:
Sen. Mark Pryor (D-AR) leads his GOP challenger, Rep. Tom Cotton (R-
AR) by a whopping 11-point margin, 51% to 40%. While most (but not all)
polls give Pryor a slight lead in the race, with still more showing it a tie, an
11-point lead breaking into a majority (no other polls give Pryor a total of at
least 50%) is much higher than any other numbers coming from the race.
In Georgia, Democratic Senate candidate Michelle Nunn is neck and neck
with all five of her potential Republican opponents. While Nunn is tied with
Rep. Jack Kingston (R-GA), she loses by one point to Rep. Paul Broun (R-
GA), and beats both Rep. Phil Gingrey (R-GA) and former Georgia
Secretary of State Karen Handel (R). The Republican who does best against
Nunn is businessman David Perdue, who leads 45% to 41%. A poll of the
May 20 Republican primary for the seat also has Perdue winning.
Finally, in Kentucky, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell leads
Democratic opponent Alison Lundergan Grimes by just one point, 46% to
45%.
Other takeaways from the survey: Senate Governor. Even as Democrat
Mark Pryor receives a big lead in his Arkansas Senate contest, the poll
shows Republican Asa Hutchinson with a big win for the states
gubernatorial race. Hutchinson leads Democrat Mike Ross, 49% to 42%.
The same is shown in Georgia, with Republican Gov. Nathan Deal ahead of
challenger Jason Carter (50% to 40%), even as Democrat Michelle Nunn is
leading (or tied with) most of her potential challengers.
This could be a hint that the national political environment, unfavorable to
Obama (and his health care law), does not necessarily translate to specific
races good news for Democrats.
A final takeaway from the new NBC/Marist poll is Obamacares Kentucky
numbers. As it does in most southern states, the Presidents signature health
care law has a very negative association, with 57% of registered voters
saying they had an unfavorable view of Obamacare. Just 33% said they
approved. But this was only when the pollsters used the term Obamacare,
the commonly used shorthand label for the Affordable Care Act. When
voters were asked about their view of kynect, the state health exchange set
up by the health law a plurality of 29% said they had a favorable
impression. This shows Democrats are probably better off without adding
the Presidents name to the law that has been successful in many state
exchanges, and means Obama was probably mistaken to have embraced the
nickname.

White House Watch

The Presidents Schedule President Obama will meet with President
Mujica Cordano of Urugauy at the White House today. Vice President Joe
Biden will also attend.
Also, in the afternoon, Obama will honor the 2014 National Association of
Police Organizations (NAPO) TOP COPS award winners, with Biden also in
attendance.
