FOREWORD
This Indian Standard was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on 21 August 1989, after the
draft finalized by the Structural Sections Sectional Committee had been approved by the Civil
Engineering Division Council.
Parallel flange beams are hot rolled steel sections with parallel or nearly parallel flange with square
toes and curves at the root of flange and web. Structurallv these beams are more efficient than the
conventional beams with sloping flanges. Further these beams have proved very popular with the
construction industry for reasons of considerably reducing the cost of fabrication.
Whereas these beams are being widely used in most of the developed countries, it is being contempu-
lated to roll these in the country in the near future.

COLUMNSECTIONS-DIMENSIONS
1 SCOPE
1.1 This standard covers the nominal dimensions,
mass and sectional properties of hot rolled steel
parallel flange beams with medium and wide
flanges and column sections.
2 REFERENCE
IS No.
Title
IS 12779 : 1989 Rolling and cutting tolerances
for hot rolled parallel flange
beam and column sections -
Specification.
3 DEFINITIONS
3.1 Y-Y Axis
A line parallel to the a%is of the web of the
_ _ _ .
section and passing through the centre of gravrty
of the section.
3.2 X-X Axis
A line passing through the centre to gravity of
the section and at right angle to the Y-Y axis.
4 DESIGNATION
4.1 Medium and wide flange beams shall be
designated by the letters IPM or IPW followed
by the depth of the section in mm. Letters I,P,M
or W stand for shape; parallel; medium and wide
flanges respectively.
4.2 Column sections shall be designated by the
letters HP followed by the depth of the section
in mm. The letters H and P stand for shape and
parallel flange respectively.
5 DIMENSIONS, MASS AND TOLERANCES
5.1 Nominal dimensions ( see Fig, 1 ) and mass
shall conform to the values given in Tables. I and
2 respectively for medium and wide flange beam
and to Table 3 for column sections. Dimetisional
and mass tolerances shall conform to IS 12 779 :
1989.
NOTE -Density for the calculation of mam of the
sccliOns har been taken as 7.85 km/cc.
6 SECTIONAL PROPERTIES
6.1 Sectional properties are given in Tables 1, 2
and 3 respectively for medium and wide flange
beams and column sections, for information.

Standards Act, 1986 and the Rules and R6gulations made thereunder. The Standard Mark on
products covered by an Indian Standard conveys the assurance that they have been produced
to comply with the requirements of that standard under a well defined system of inspection,
testing and quality control which is devised and supervised by BIS and operated by the pro-
ducer. Standard marked products are also continuously checked by BIS for conformity to that
standard as a further safeguard. Details of conditions under which a licence for the use
of the Standard Mark may be granted to manufacturers or producers may be obtained from
