Smooth and pad foot roller drums
Smooth drums are used for non-cohesive
and mixed soils. Fine-grain materials are
best compacted using the kneading and mil-
ling effect of pad foot drums.
100% increase with polygonal
drums
The sometimes poor depth effect of smooth
drum rollers is eliminated with the successi-
ve action of wedge and plate when rolling
with the polygonal drum. This process incre-
ases the depth effect so as to allow up to
100% layer thickness increases. Polygonal
drums are suitable for most soil types
cohesive and non-cohesive.
Compaction of rockfill
Rockfill is used on many on large scale con-
struction sites where mobile crushing plants
are typically used. Costs are considerable
and can be avoided altogether with the use of
single drum rollers fitted with a rock crus-
hing drum. The application range extends to
all materials up to 100 MN/m
2

Single drum rollers with circular exciters
have 2 amplitudes and fixed frequencies.
Manual control is performed at the operators
platform. High amplitude is used for thick
layers and low for surface compaction and
thin fill layers.
BOMAG VARIOCONTROL (BVC)
The fast, progressive and automatic adjust-
ment of compaction power with VARIOCON-
TROL guarantees maximum compaction per-
formance with each pass until the level of
soil stiffness (E
VIB
) preset by the roller driver
is achieved. Six amplitudes can be preset
when compacting close to buildings to limit
the vibration risk. The advantages of VARIO-
CONTROL are:

The demand for high gradeability on waste
disposal sites and earthworks has grown
continuously over the last few years. For
these jobs rollers in the DH-4/DHC-4/PDH-
4/PDHC-4 series are equipped as standard
with ANTI-SLIP-CONTROL (ASC). This
system constantly monitors the speed of the
drum and wheels. If one starts to spin, the oil
flow to relevant motor is automatically redu-
ced. Slip is minimised, the roller remains
under control and the maximum torque is
delivered to the soil surface. This means that
gradients of up to 60% can be climbed under
true site conditions.

that the time and cost of servicing are kept to
a minimum.
All models have maintenance-free compo-
nents which means total elimination of lubri-
cating nipples. The roller driver only needs to
check the engine oil level in the morning and
hes ready to drive off (BOMAGs Less is
More concept). Also if drivers are frequent-
ly changed, there is no risk of downtime due
to service work being carried out. The capa-
bility of these rollers to work to capacity is
maintained at the highest level.
When servicing and maintenance is needed
on filters, the mechanic has an easy job due
to the clever arrangement of the assemblies.
After opening the easy access engine hood,
all filters, oil and fuel tanks and outlet ope-
nings are reached comfortably and safely
from the ground.
The Less is More philosphy:
All models with operating weights up to
16 t have no lubricating nipples: the articu-
lated joint, steering cylinder and travel bea-
rings are maintenance-free and life-time
lubricated. The driver needs only to check
the engine oil level that takes just a few
seconds.

changed only every 2000 operating hours
or every 2 years

The cab: room for the highest performance
The effectiveness with which the roller is
used is dependent on the roller driver. Its not
just ergonomics and comfort but also how
quickly the operator becomes accustomed to
operating the machine. This is particularly
important nowadays as drivers change so
frequently. Only after this will the roller be
used efficiently and economically.

the dashboard and the multi-functional arm-
rest on the seat.
All information relating to the operation of

This technology is now also available for
BOMAG rollers with standard vibration
systems. The BOMAG E
VIB
Meter (BEM), for
example, shows the E
VIB
value achieved on
the circular gauge in the cab. Using the
BOMAG Terrameter Plus (BTM plus), diffe-
rent passes are compared with each other
and the driver signalled in red when the tar-
get or maximum degree of compaction has
been achieved. In the next equipment stage,
the BTM prof, the bearing capacity E
VIB

can be documented with the printer
onto a paper strip. If larger areas are to be
documented, the BOMAG Compaction
Management System BCM 05 is the prefer-
red choice and can be combined with GPS
(BCM 05 positioning).
