1. A small lumber company in the Southwest produces two types of pine boards used in
home construction: 2x4s and 2x6s (dimensions in inches). They have sales
commitments to produce four 2x4s and two 2x6s, but they think that they should not
produce more than eight 2x6s because of market demand. They are also trying to
support the local community by employing people. Thus they want to keep at least 12
men employed but only need 2 men to produce each 2x4 and 1 person to produce each
2x6 per minute. It costs them $.50 to produce a 2x4 and $.80 to produce a 2x6 per
minute. Formulate linear programming g problem.

Let x1 = number of 2x4s produce

Let x2 = number of 2x6s produce

1. Maximize Z = 4 x1 + 8 x2
Subject to: 4 x1 + 2 x2 3.6
X1 + 2 x2 15.6
and
X1, x2 0

2. The National Credit Union has $250,000 available to invest in a 12-month commitment.
The money can b e placed in Treasury notes yielding an 8 % return or municipal bonds
yielding an average rate of return of 9%. Credit union regulations require diversification
to the extent that at least 50% of the investment be placed in Treasury notes. Because of
defaults in such municipalities as Cleveland and New York, it is decided that no more
than 40% of the investment be place in bonds. Formulate as a linear programming
problem.

Let x1 = returned earned from Treasury notes

Let x2 = returned earned from Credit Union

2. Maximize Z = x1 + x2
Subject to: 6x + 8y 380
8x + 4y 300
12 x + 4y 404
and
x 0, y 0

3. Minimize C = 5x1 + 6x2
Subject to: x1 + 4x2 300
3x1 +2x2 600
X1 50
And
X1, x2 0
Solve using the graphical solution technique.

4. Maximize Z = x1 + x2
Subject to : 2x1 + x2 100
X1 + 2x2 100
and
X1, x2 0
Solve using the graphical solution technique.
