Rover P38
From status-symbol to bargain-basement - lovely cars, but plenty of
pitfalls for the unwary. Take a deep breath and buy one?

ay'P38'and you'll
divide Land Rover
enthusiasts. For
some, this second-
generation Range
Rover never came
close to matching the original and
was merelyashort-lived stepping-
stone to better things. For others,
it's one of the best cars Land Rover
ever made and has wrongly been
denied classic status.
At the heart of the argument
is 1990s technical sophistication.
More than one angry owner
has sold up, frustratedwith a
neighbour's central heating
systemremotelywaking up the
car and flattening its battery.
Tales of owners crawling home on
bump-stops after air-suspension
problems aren't just tall stories -
and such incidents are rife.
Engines can let go in ahorribly

owners couldn't face f ranchised
dealers' servicing charges, so
many P38s were bodged by
: back-street garages. Others were
; never serviced at all. Asking prices
; plummeteduntil the cost of
: maintenance exceeded the value
; of the vehicle. EveryP38 was
; viewedwith suspicion.
But most of these horror
I stories are now firmly in the past.
; Air-suspension parts prices are
; much cheaper and electronics
; maladies have been dealt with.
; TodayaP38 makes awonderfully

: and it's astonishingly good off-
road. Its pre-bling erastyling has
aged gracefullytoo. And there's
a massive plus with aP38: there's
not much rust.
No P38 costs verymuch, so it
makes sense to buythe best.
Keep enough in the kitty for some
DIYand proactive maintenance,
and you'll have alot of carfor not
a lot of money.
And, when someone asks you
what car you drive, you can reply
'A Range Rover'. And that will
sound pretty good, won't it?
WHAT TO LOOK FOR
ENGINE
Three engines saw service in the
P38: Rover 4.0-litre and 4.6-litre
petrol V8s, and aBMW straight-
six diesel. All have timing chains,
not cambelts - one less thing to
worry about. Neither V8 suffers
fromcamshaft wear as much as
the earlier 3.5 and 3.9versions of
the Range Rover Classic.
Serial P38 owner John Seaton,
who's on his fourth, explains:
'Engines in cars built from 1994
to 1998are usually referred to
as GEMSunits [Lucas engine
management]. Those built from
1999 are known as THORunits
[Bosch engine management].
These are usually more reliable.'
Specialist Jason Partridge
(mobilelandroverservices.co.uk)
warns; 'V8 liners can slip, or
the block is porous. The system
pressurises - look out for rock-
hard hoses. The solution is a
reconditioned engine.' If you go
down that route, ashort block
costs 2454 while afull engine
without ancillaries is 3240, both
fromTurner Engineering (turner-
engineering.co.uk).
Ex-breaker V8s may already
have problems, so be very
cautious. 'The engine needs to
be in decent condition before
you consider buying,' advises
Florida-based owner TomPage,
who has rebuilt his. 'Cracked
blocks happen after overheating
-whi ch is why I installed adigital
temperature gauge. But if V8
liners are good after 60,000 miles,
they'll stay good.'
If the engine's been hot, you
maysuffer cylinder head gasket
problems. Symptoms are loss
of performance and oil in the
coolant. Lee Haines of Longhope
Motor Services in Gloucestershire
(longhopemotorservices.com)
advises: 'Watch out for the
hose off the top of the radiator
to the expansion tank - it can
get blocked, then the system
pressurises. That can be enough
to finish off ahead gasket.' Lee
can sort this out for 87.10.

LEZCOMPLIANT? Yes
Don't neglect the basic checks:
listen for big-end knocking
and check for leaks under the
water pump.
Diesels are notorious starters. 'If
cold starts are bad it might be
old glow plugs or aweak lift

'If both hot and cold starts are
troublesome, it'll be a confused
sensor - bypass it with ahot-
start kit. Only 40if I did i t' Lee
Haines adds: 'The diesel's battery
should be about 1200 cranking
amps, but most people just buy
whatever battery's convenient.
When cold, there's not enough
power to run all the electrics
and turn the engine. You think
it's battery-drain, but in fact the
battery is too small.'
Beware of the diesel's water
pump, whose plastic impeller
is prone to breaking up. 'No
heating in the car is a clear
sign,' warns Jason. 'Then comes
overheating and serious engine
damage.' Budget for ametal-
impeller replacement costing

WHEELS/TYRES
P38s werefitted with 7Jx16

throughout production. Some
higher-spec models and special

The air suspension has five
height settings: normal, lower
for speed, lowest for access, high
for off-road, extra-high to lower
wheels for grip if the vehicle is
bellied-out. The systemcomprises
pump, valve block, suspension
units (air springs), airlines and
control systems. 'Air springs
perish,' says Jason. 'Send the car
up to its highest setting - if the air
springs [bags] are cracked around
the base, they probably won't last
long. For me to change all four
would be 370 including parts.'
He adds: 'When testing the air
system, make sure it rises quickly
and goes to all settings. If it's
slow to rise, the compressor
pump is on its way out.' A
reconditioned pump is 125

Lee Haines. 'If it's clogged, the
pump runs hot, which is a cause
of compressor failure.' Agenuine

DIYis possible in most cases.
BRAKES
'When you turn on, there will be
five to 10 seconds of buzzing -
that's the ABSpump priming,'
Jason explains. 'If you press the
brake pedal four times, it will
kick in and prime itself again.
But if it primes every time you
press, that's an internal leak. To
fix, change the accumulator -
150 if I do it. ABSproblems
are normally to do with an
ABS speed sensor (one
per wheel). If the
ABS light won't go out, check the
sensors-sometimes they'll push
up, which means the air gap is
wrong. It mayjust need pushing
back in.'
Check you don't need a lot of
pedal pressure (pistons stuck),
that there are no brake vibrations
(warped or rusted discs), and that
the car pulls up straight. Front
calipers are 79.02 each, plus 54
to fit. Front discs are 82.51 a pair,
plus 67.50 to fit. Front pads are
105.54 a pair, plus 45.90 to fit.
(All prices from Longhope.)
Q Brakes are pretty
straightforward for DIY, but
have often been neglected. A
lot of fixing can get expensive.
STEERING
steering ball-joints are often
worn, leading to a vague steering
feel. 'They're bars,' says Jason.
'One end is detachable, the other
captive. The bar with ends costs
about 60; add about 30 for me
to fit.' Turn the steering wheel. 'If
it's graunchy or notchy, that may
be the joints in the collapsible
steering column, or the power-
steering pump is low on oil, or the
power-steering belt is slipping,'
says Lee. None costs much to fix.
Steering should feel precise
and the car should drive straight
ahead on a flat road with your
fingers barely touching the wheel
(when safe, of course).
Q The steering system is
usually good. If not, many fixes
are straightforward. Simple
things like ball-joints often
make a bigdifference.
ELECTRICS
Most electrical/electronic issues
on early P38s were sorted
out long ago; later cars didn't
have these problems. Even
so, press every button and
check everything works. 'It's
not uncommon to have dud
heated seats,' says John Seaton.
Jason adds: 'Get the radio and
immobiliser codes. Get two keys
for the car and make sure both
work, because they're expensive.'
