Spring 2014
Math Geometry
Perimeter Day 1

Learning Goal
My learning goal is to present a math lesson in a timely manner that is
interesting and understandable to the students
My learning goal is to maintain acceptable classroom management
throughout the lesson, including an activity that takes us out of the classroom

Rationale
I am teaching this lesson to introduce the topic of perimeter
This lesson is important because the unit continues with more perimeter and
area, the latter of which can be difficult to understand without understanding
perimeter
This lesson fits into the big picture as part of the geometry unit

Source
The guidelines for this lesson come from Envision Math. I have collaborated
with Liz for ideas and used my own ideas to make it my own

Objective
Students will use shapes to find basic perimeter and begin to understand the
formula of adding the sides
Students will notice they can find missing sides from given information

Standards
3.MD.D.8 Solve real world and mathematical problems involving
perimeters of polygons, including finding the perimeter given the side
lengths, finding an unknown side length, and exhibiting rectangles with the
same perimeter and different areas or with the same area and different
perimeters

Materials
QOD on whiteboard
Finding Perimeter in class worksheet
HL 94 homework
Perimeter activity
o Recording sheet
o Masking tape

Procedure
Introduction
QOD: I need to put a fence around my yard. How can I find out how much
fence I need?
o Discuss answers measure around the yard
Introduce perimeter
o The distance around a figure

Lesson Development
Draw example figure on white board
o Label each side in inches
Show the perimeter (sides)
o How can we find the perimeter?
Add side lengths
Mark off sides as counted
Remember unit
Pass out in class worksheet
o Complete as a class for understanding of perimeter concepts
Perimeter activity
o Students will work in partners
o 5 stations set up in the hall
Tape forming shapes
1 tile = 1 ft
o Find the perimeter at each station and record it on handout
o Review hallway behavior
Teacher observes and helps groups in hallway during activity
When groups are finished, they may work on Understanding Perimeter

Differentiation
Teacher will help struggling groups during activity
o It is okay for struggling groups to go at needed pace

Conclusion
What are some ways we can use perimeter in real life?
Envision video time permitting

Assessment
In class activity
