Azoulay, Ariella. "When the Body Politic Ceases To Be an Idea." When the Body Politic Ceases To Be an
Idea | Manifesta Journal. N.p., n.d. Web. 10 Apr. 2014
Ariellas journal goes back to the history of the body politic and the people that were apart of it.
She called it an ongoing regime-made disaster during the great revolutions of the eighteenth
century. Ariella says the body politic was based on religion, gender, race, and or nationality.
Everyone who was governed by the body politic werent all recognized as citizens. The main
people distanced from the body politic were women, blacks, children, and the poor. Many tried to
rebel against this by surrounding policeman, putting up tents and claiming a repartitioning. Ariella
also included pictures with this journal which gave me a more clearer image on the body politic
and how it affected those who were governed under this. This journal is very useful to my
research because it gives me background information on the topic as well as pictures that
expanded my view on what the body politic really was about.
Charo, Alta R. "The New England Journal of Medicine." Physicians and the (Woman's) Body Politic
NEJM. N.p., 14 Jan. 2014. Web. 10 Apr. 2014.
This article was about the womens body politic, how it affects them and their physicians. Alicia
Beltran was a pregnant woman who stopped using painkillers during her pregnancy. Instead of
her receiving prenatal care she was forced to continue using the painkillers and when she refused
she was arrested. Even though Beltran tested negative for drug dependence she was still sent off
to a facility for months. This is a prime example of the judicial and legislative system misusing
medical information and using physicians to do it. Its a way of them controlling pregnancy
terminations and the female body. In 2007, the U.S Supreme Court banned D&X procedures
which were needed for later term abortions. The Supreme Court says its a gruesome procedure
and by not going through with it preserves the health of the woman. Although physicians
contradicted this theory they were ignored. This affects women all over because their choice to
keep or abort their baby is now eliminated and is now the choice of the government. This also
affects their physicians because they have to go against what they know is right and follow the
governments orders. This is article is helpful in my research because it is very similar to the topic
and it gives me someones personal account on the subject.
Conner, Erin O. "Epitaph for the Body Politic: A Review of Roy Porter's Bodies Politic: Disease, Death and
Doctors in Britain, 1650-1900." Erin O'Connor. N.p., n.d. Web. 10 Apr. 2014.
This source goes all the way back to the 1500s with information on the body politic. Its said that
the king has two bodies, his body natural and body politic. His body natural would be subject to all
infirmities that come by nature or accident and to the like defects that happen to the bodies of
other people. His body politic would be a body that couldnt be seen or handled, consisted of the
government and policy. The body politic is utterly void of infancy and old age and other natural
defects and imbecilities which the body natural is subject to. The body politic has been used by
Henry VIII, who declared himself Supreme Head of the Church In England claimed his duty was
to the body politic, and Shakespeare who used the body politic in his stage plays. I believe this
source is very useful because it goes back to the history of the body politic and explains to me its
definition and use. This source also gives me detailed names of who used the body politic and
how they used it, which will be helpful towards my research.
"International Health and Biodefense." U.S. Department of State. U.S. Department of State, n.d. Web. 11
Apr. 2014.
This site informs me on how the U.S and other agencies work together to improve the health of
citizens. The Office of International Health Affairs works with the U.S government to make policies
that would be beneficial to our health. The U.S government isnt the only one that the IHB works
with, the USAID, The National Security and The Departments of Health and Human services are
just some of the few people that the IHB are involved with. HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis is a
constant public health problem and two of the three leading causes of death due to infectious
diseases. The U.S works to improve the quality of TB programs and the USAID is the lead agency
for international TB programs. Another program supported by the U.S would be the Presidents
Malaria Initiative 5 year program ran by the USAID. This program attempts to reduce the malaria
related deaths in the 15 most hardest hit countries. This site is useful because it gives me
information on different policies and programs made to improve the health of the country along
with links to other things such as environmental health, and policies that benefit youth and
women.
Koppelman, Sam. "5 Issues Being Debated This Election That Affect Teens." The Huffington Post.
TheHuffingtonPost.com, 23 Aug. 2012. Web. 10 Apr. 2014.
Sam Koppelmans article is about a couple issues going on that will affect teens. The health care
reform is a positive benefit to teens as it allows them to still be insured with their parents until
they turn 25 saving a teenager big bucks in the long run. Romneys plan A Chance For Every Child
insures that every teen will be taught by a qualified teacher, and the accessibility of birth control
will be expanded for every sexually active female teenager. The issues being debated are so far
affecting teens in a positive way saving them money and possibly improving their education. This
source is extremely helpful because its about the current issues and policies possibly being made
in this present time which relates to the topic.
McMahon, Mary, and O. Wallace. WiseGeek. Conjecture, 29 Mar. 2014. Web. 10 Apr. 2014.
This site answers the question what is the body politic? It describes the body politic as everyone
from the governments leader down to the ordinary citizens. Some might say the body politic as
just the government itself but the main point is for the government to focus like a healthy human
body. The site goes back to the Greeks and how they used the body politic as a metaphor to
describe the state. The term the body politic actually comes from Thomas Hobbes, who
mentioned it in his book Leviathan in 1651. The body politic is also used in a religious sense. The
Church views itself as the heart and God as the head of the body. This site was very useful in my
research as it gave me background information on the body politic and the many different ways
its used and described.
Ostrander, Madeline. "The Body Politic." YES! Magazine. N.p., Aug.-Sept. 2012. Web. 10 Apr. 2014.
Madeline Ostrander recounts back to a personal experience of hers in her article. She had
punctured the palm of her hand which became so infected she had to stay in the hospital for two
nights and paid thousands of dollars to cure her injury. She believes that money the more of the
motive instead of the health of the people. Madeline points out the fact there are no playgrounds
for children to play and stay active which leads to weight gain. She also talks about how profit
drives the markets and when you go into the grocery store there are more fattening foods to
choose from than foods that are more healthier. When you look at depression commercials they
dont tell you the factors besides drugs that could cure your depression such as walking or
spending time with your family. Madeline speaks on how the states are slashing the funds for
birth control and passing abortion laws which takes away the choices women used to have when
it comes to their health and body. She believes that we should start taking more charge of our
health and make better decisions on how we choose to live. This article was very helpful as it
related to the topic with issues going on in the present time along with a personal experience
from the author herself.
"Preventive Care for Children." United States Department of Health and Human Services. N.p., n.d. Web.
10 Apr. 2014.
This site lists the many benefits from the Affordable Care Act that a child can get. With the
Affordable Care Act a child whose at risk for anemia can get iron supplements, gonorrhea
medicine is provided for new born babies, and autism screenings are provided for children
between the ages of 18 24months. The Affordable Care Act provides immunization vaccines for
Hepatitis B, Influenza, Measles, and Rotavirus. It also screens any sexually active female for
cervical cancer other known as the Pap test. The benefits a child could gain from the Affordable
Care Act are endless and very beneficial to their health. This site is useful towards my research as
it relates to the topic and provides heavy information to back it up. This site also provides links to
further my research.
"Public Policy." Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. N.p., n.d. Web. 11 Apr. 2014.
This site explains to me what public policy really is and how it helps to benefit people, businesses,
and families. Public policy affects education, the environment, the availability and quality of
health, income, and many other things. For instance, the minimum wage laws ensures that people
earn an adequate salary for the work that they perform. Public housing standards make sure that
safety and public health issues such as lead paint exposure are addressed. The only people that
can change laws to improve the health of the community is the people of the community. By
eliminating unhealthy conditions and getting the community involved public policy can improve
and so will the health of the people. This site was helpful as it informed on what public policy was
and how it affects everyday people and everyday life. It also provided me with different ways that
I could change public policy for the better.
Zernike, Kate. "The Nation: Food Fight; Is Obesity the Responsibility of the Body Politic?" The New York
Times. The New York Times, 08 Nov. 2003. Web. 10 Apr. 2014.
Kate Zernikes article explains her reasoning for obesity in America. One side believes that obesity
has now become a public health crisis and should have a public health solution. They insist that
the government should use its powers to eliminate the problem and that there should be a calorie
count on every restaurant menu. School lunch and federal nutrition programs provide food
packages with high-fat foods and sugary juices to children. A Democratic representative Sean
Faircloth, points out how the government budget has cut recess and physical education classes
which are the main two things that keep a child active and informed about their health. They also
believe that there should be a calorie count on every menu. The other side says that they cant
legislate eating less and exercising more and that a persons weight is simply their choice. They
oppose the calorie counts on menus and support things such as the Commonsense Consumption
Act, which would prohibit lawsuits against restaurants or food companies for causing obesity. This
article was useful because it provides factual information along with the opposing sides opinion.
