From the Stewardship
Committee
We are pleased to provide this overview
of the 2010 church budget. We hope it will help
you see how your gifts are used to support the
ministries of our church.
Each year the church budget is based on
the careful recommendations of each church
committee. Each is “ministry-based,” estimating
the actual cost of carrying out the ministries and
missions entrusted to them.
Our pledge goal for this stewardship
season is $207,205, as shown in the list of
projected income for 2010. This is an ambitious
but reachable goal. It will require sacrificial
giving by each of us. Without all our gifts, we at
KUPC could not have such a vibrant ministry.
Please express your support for our
church and its ongoing missions and ministries by
committing to the 2010 ministry budget with a
significant offering of your financial blessings.
To do this:
1. Prayerfully and thoughtfully complete the
enclosed commitment card.
2. Come to worship with your commitment card
to our Commitment Sunday, December 13,
2009. If you are unable to attend that day,
you may mail the card to the church office.

Caring for Our Members $XX,XXX
Ministry Investment
The Worship Ministry
Of Our Church $XXX,XXX
Our worship ministry is provided by our
soon-to-be-named Interim Pastor and our
Director of Music, and is supported through the
work of the Worship Committee. Supplies for
services, music for our three choirs,
accoutrements for special services, and
maintenance of our beautiful organ and our
historic and treasured sanctuary are all part of the
worship ministry budget.
The Christian Education Ministry
Of Our Church $XX,XXX
This ministry is provided by our Director
of Christian Education. The budget funds a
program of Sunday School for all ages, a nursery,
our youth ministry and retreats, Fun-at-Church
group, Vacation Bible School, confirmation
classes and table celebration, new elder training,
our church library, and Bible study. Our Sunday
School and fellowship hall facilities are valued
resources.
Christian fellowship and congregational
care are important ministries of our church.
These include pastoral care, visits to elderly
members, hospital visits, weddings, funerals,
congregational dinners and receptions, the church
picnic, website, newsletter, and support for PALS
(Presbyterians at Leisure) and Presbyterian
Women.
Mission and Outreach Ministries
Of Our Church $XX,XXX
Our mission and outreach ministry is
carried out by a broad spectrum of our
congregation, supported by the church staff. To
name only a few mission activities, our children
and youth prepare shoeboxes for Operation
Christmas Child. Our Mission and Outreach
Committee coordinates our church participation
with Piedmont School, Habitat for Humanity,
Oakwood Terrace Christmas activities, and an
annual blood drive with the American Red Cross.
Through the Schwamb Memorial Fund,
$17,000 is given to various mission-based
projects in our community. The Kanawha Forum
opens our church for noon-time concerts and
lunches. In addition, support for our overall
mission ministry is channeled through gifts to the
Presbyterian Church (USA), our synod and the
Presbytery.
Presbyterian Partnership
Of Our Church $6,500
Our connection to the larger church is
funded through Per Capita, which underwrites the
ecclesiastical needs provided through the larger
church. Kanawha Church also provides an
annual contribution to Davis & Elkins College.

A Message from
Our Interim Moderator of
Session
“The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in
it, the world, and those who live in it.” (Psalm
24:1 NRSV)
This affirmation is the foundation of a
Christian understanding of the world and of our
life. As Christians, we recognize that God is the
owner of all things. We are his stewards, his
managers. Our claim of ownership of a house or
some land or money is really an
acknowledgement of our trusteeship, for all
things belong to God.
If everything belongs to God, then all our
money belongs to God – not just the part we give
to the church, but all of it. As Christian stewards,
we are responsible to God for how we use all our
money.
Dr. Charles Shedd wrote in Promises to
Peter that Christians should use their money in
this way: Give ten percent away, save ten
percent, and spend the rest with praise and
thanksgiving. That is still good advice. We can
use eighty percent with praise and thanksgiving
when we know that we have shared with others
and that we have made provisions for future
needs.
As we prayerfully consider our pledge
commitments for 2010, let us remember that
stewardship is not just another program for the
church. Rather, stewardship is at the heart of
what it means to be Christ’s people. We are
people who believe that everything belongs to
God.
