TEAMSTERS LOCAL 294 CDL TRAINING

SCHOOL GETS THUMBS-UP FROM GRADUATES
By Jerry Romeo, Instructor

Although the training school got off' to a slow start we are already seeing our members benefit from their efforts.
After more than a year of planning Teamsters Local 294 Training School started up formal classes on September l ... 'h,
2000.

Our immediate goal is to provide our members with educational opportunities to elevate their skills and earning
potential for themselves and their families. Since September (as of this writing) we have had 13 members test for
their CDL Class A license with only one disqualification. A great record for our instructors, Dave Garhartt from
American Steel and Jerry Romeo from Allied Systems. GO TEAMSTERS!

During the first class we bad no formal format for training. Our instructors and school coordinator had to
research and compile data relevant to all aspects of CDL training, defensive driving, adverse weather driving,
accident reponing, DOT rules and regulations, etc . After many hours of work, we have a finished product. The
COL School Instructors Manual is now the basis for all of our training.

In addition to COL training the school is designed to offer educational awareness of Teamsters history, and some
labor laws which are responsible for unions to exist, in addition to agencies like OSHA, DOT, National Labor
Relations Board, etc. These additional topics were introduced in an effort to raise the awareness of our members and
to provide the truths of our union. and help them realize that unionism should not be taken for granted.

So far tbe members who have attended our program have given us the "thumbs-up" regarding the entire course
outline. The overseers from the N.Y. State Labor Department have also given us the "thumbs-up" and they like what
they see. As compared to tbe other COL schools in the area we are producing results. That means results and
benefits for our members and their families. That is what Teamsters Local 294 is all about, our members.

The Local is in the process of applying for a second grant from the N.Y. State Labor Department in the hope of
continuing and expanding our training school, offering more opportunities for our members. We are hoping 10 be
able to offer vocational training otber than truck driving in the future.

We are proud of our new school and all the people who contributed in making it II reality, Special thanks to John
Bulgaro (or his insight and tenacity for getting things done. and to Kathy Harkins who handles all the fine print, in
addition to offering much needed help to the instructors and coordinators. Lastly, we congratulate Dave Garhartt
and Jerry Romeo for their commitment and giving the hands-on, elbow to elbow training to the members who attend
our school.

Congratulations 10 all, especially the recent graduates from "TEAMSTERS LOCAL 294 TRAINING SC.HOOL":
