Question:
Do you advise reading the books of al-Qaradw?
Answer from Shaykh Mashhr:
I do not advise to read al-Qaradws books, I do not advise this, rather I do not
deem it permissible to listen to his fatw! Al-Qaradw, despite his broad investigation
has a corrupted Usl, his views are subject to the current situation, he opts for the easiest
statement and when I meet him in 1985 CE I heard him with my own ears saying if an
Arab asks me about singing I say to him its harm but if a non-Arab asks me
about singing I say to him its hall! Is there any misguidance after this?! I do not
change my view on al-Qaradw however I do not deem it permissible to call him a
barking dog because Allh has instructed us to say good to even the kuffr and He has
instructed us to have good manners with people. I view that refuting al-Qaradw is Fard
ul-Kif (Collective Responsibility) which none has done today. I have exhorted myself
regularly to do it and I hope Allh will aid me in that because the corruptions with al-
Qaradw are not in the fur. I have co-operated with some of our brothers who have
refuted al-Qaradw and many books and long pieces of research have been printed and
published, which neither cure the sick nor quench the thirst, on the prohibition of singing
or on the prohibition this and that, yet this is not the matter that is needed as what is
needed is to bring attention to his twisted Usl. For I have mentioned to you that errors in
the fur are based on a twisted Usl even if this may not be apparent to the person making
such errors. Throwing light on twisted Usl necessitates that a person knows about every
matter upon which Usl is structured and extracted. As for long research on the

prohibition of this and that then the bookstores are filled with books on the prohibition of
music and singing and our Shaykh (al-Albn, rahimahullh) has a precious work entitled
Tahreem lt ut-Tarab [The Prohibition of Musical Instruments]. One took the book and
abridged it and said that half of it is a refutation of al-Qaradw, yet this is not a refutation
of al-Qaradw. I still say that: we need very comprehensive books as our brother
Sulaymn al-Khursh did against Muhammad Amrah entitled Muhammad Amrah fil-
Mzn. This is of the best books which assess his errors with an academic survey and
investigation explaining the twisted Usl within much of the subsidiary branches (fur).
