DETAN TENSION ROD SYSTEM

FACADE
DT 05-E

The DETAN Tension Rod System
The DETAN Tension Rod System is an
aesthetically pleasing method of provi-
ding bracing or structural support. The
DETAN system is manufactured from
both carbon steel and stainless steel in
a variety of sizes.
Adjustment for length is hidden within
the system and is provided without
the use of turnbuckles or unsightly
exposed threads.
The manufacture of every component
in the DETAN system is permanently
controlled and fulfills the requirements
of the HALFEN-DEHA Quality Mana-
gement System, certified according to
ISO 9001.
The DETAN System has been type
approved by the Inspection Board for
Building Engineering LGA, Bavaria,
Germany.
Product features:
Easily adjustable for length
Type approved
Sealing of the threads for corrosion
protection available (optional)
System diameters from 6 to 95 mm
(in stainless steel up to 30 mm)
Load capacity up to 2695 kN
Available in carbon steel and stainless
steel
Variety of standard finishes

DETAN in stain-
less steel are typically used in applica-
tions, where a high resistance to
corrosion is necessary, or where a
polished finish is preferred.
Stainless steel tension rods are availa-
ble up to six metres long in 9 diame-
ters ranging from 6 mm to 30 mm. As
with the carbon steel system, couplers
and anchor discs may be used to
extend the system when long spans
are required.
Product range, load capacities and
dimensions are detailed on pages 8
and 9.
For all components of the stainless
steel system the following finishes are
:
- polished (satin), order code
- hand polished (glossy),

The increased load capacity of the
system allows a reduction
of the system size compared with former
systems at one or two ranges, see table

Available in nineteen diameters the
DETAN System is supplied in two
carbon steel strengths:
System diam. 6-12 mm = 355 N/mm
The material
for the tension rods is in accordance
with the German standards for steel
construction: value Av >27 J at -20C).
Product range, allowable loads and
dimensions see pages 6 and 7.
Two standard finishes are available for
DETAN-S460:
- black, order code:
- hot dip galvanised rods and anchor
discs with Dacromet coated fork
connectors (a corrosion protective
coating, which is at least equivalent to
hot dip galvanising), order code:
System diam. 16-95 mm = 460 N/mm.
By using high grade steels the DETAN
System is able to provide superior
performance and economy while saving
material and weight.

Tension Rods
are supplied with one left-hand and
one right-hand thread to compliment
the threaded adjustment facility in the
fork connectors. Flats on the DETAN
tension rod enable a spanner to be
used to turn the rod on its threads.
Depending on the direction that the
rod is turned the length of the system
is either increased or reduced within
the limits of its adjustment.
are used to join DETAN tension rods in
applications requiring long spans. They
also provide an additional facility for
adjusting the system for length. Each
DETAN coupler is provided with two
locking nuts. Sizes M12 and above can
be supplied with a welded lug to
provide a hanger connection if requi-
red. Hangers can be used in long span
applications to limit system deflection.
Couplers
Anchor Discs
Fork Connectors
are another method for extending the
span of the system, or they can be
used to provide a central connection
point for structures requiring cross
bracing. A maximum of eight bars may
be connected to each anchor disc.
provide an adjustable connection
between the tension rod and connecti-
on plates on the structure or anchor
discs. Each DETAN tension rod system
has 2 fork connectors, one with left-
hand and one with right-hand thread.
Fork connectors can easily be identi-
fied by the color coded end plugs that
seal the fork ends from moisture pene-
tration (yellow = right-hand, blue =
left-hand thread). Combined with
tapered locking nuts they provide an
aesthetically pleasing connection to
the tension bar.
Each fork connector is provided with
a pin and two circlips.
A combination of flat and round seals
can be provided to special order for
locking nuts M16 and above, if is
desired to seal to the the threads from
the accumulation of moisture or dirt.
Locking nuts for systems M6 to M12
are tightened with soft touch pliers.
Sizes M16 and above are tightened
using a peg spanner.
To provide a visual safety check, the
locking nut hides an indicator mark on
the tension rod only when the system
is within its allowable range of adjust-
ment.

Connection Plates
are used to attach the system to the
structure. They can be supplied as fins
for welding to steelwork or as
T-brackets for bolting to the structure.
Care should be taken in designing the
position of connection plates to ensure
that the tension rod system is not
subject to bending.
Cast-in HALFEN channels or drilled
bolts may be used to fix connection
plates to concrete structures.
Connection plates can be provided by
HALFEN-DEHA or by a quality metal-
worker.
DETAN Compression Rods
DETAN Tension rods satisfy most
design requirements for bracing, but
occasionally there is a need for a com-
pression member to both strengthen
and stabilise the structure.
DETAN Compression Rods have been
designed to fulfil this requirement,
while being aesthetically compatible
with the other DETAN components.
Compression rods consist of large
diameter tubes, which are reduced at
each end to use standard DETAN fork
connectors to the structure. They are
designed to order, and are available in
both carbon steel and stainless steel.

Assembly DETAN Sealing System
The load values given in the tables are
exclusively for use with the DETAN tensi-
on rod components. Before installation
the DETAN components should always be
visually checked for any damage caused
during transport. When connecting plates
are used that have not been fabricated
and delivered by HALFEN-DEHA, the
materials, dimensional and geometric
limits specified in the technical approval
should always be observed. The installati-
on tolerances given in the technical gui-
dance notes should also be observed. If,
after the delivery of the DETAN compo-
nents from HALFEN-DEHA, any part is
mechanically modified by the user in a
manner, which deviates from the establis-
hed guidance notes, then the technical
approval becomes invalid.
The DETAN locknut is screwed fully on
the DETAN Tension Rod. The fork
connector is screwed on the tension
rod until the the required system length
is achieved. The locknut is
There are special markings on the
DETAN tension rod to ensure, by scre-
wing the locknut up properly, that the
minimum screw-in depth into the fork
end is achieved. This is confirmed when
the mark is obscured and the locknut is
properly tightened.
The pin in the fork connector is secured
by two circlips, one on each side. Use a
sprung pliers for the installation of the
circlips.

then scre-
wed back towards the fork connector
until it is locked.
The DETAN precise expansion measuring
system is attached to the unloaded tensi-
on rod. By applying the pre-stress load
(e.g. by screwing the tension rod into the
fork ends, see assembly instructions) the
tension rod is expanded. By exactly
measuring the expansion the pre-stress
load can be determined. This measuring
system can be used for all sizes of the
DETAN tension rod system.
In case of removing or unintentional
slipping of the measuring unit the refer-
ence measurement is lost; in this case the
tension rod must be completely released
and the pre-stressing and measuring
procedure must be started again. Long
term load supervision cannot be provided
by this system. For this purpose another
measuring system is required.
