Permanent job vacancies are
on the rise according to the
latest Reed Job Index fgures
NEW permanent jobs are growing faster
than temporary or contract vacancies, as
confidence continues to grow amongst UK
employers, according to the latest figures
released by reed.co.uk.
So far in 2014, the number of permanent
jobs available has grown by more than 21
per cent compared to the 2013 average. At
the same time, temporary jobs and contract
positions have both risen by 16 per cent.
More than 555,000 permanent and 88,000
temporary jobs have been advertised on
reed.co.uk since the start of the year, while
62,000 contract positions have been offered.
Overall, April saw new jobs in the UK
grow by 28 per cent year-on-year, with no-
table gains in transport and logistics (up 81
per cent on 2013), construction and property
(up 65 per cent) and security and safety (up
61 per cent).
The Reed Job Index of new vacancies,
which is compiled every month using data
from more than 180,000 live vacancies
advertised on reed.co.uk, stands at 196, up
from 153 in April last year. Meanwhile, at 97
points, the Reed Salary Index remains lower
than when it was first set in December 2009,
as pay rates have failed to keep pace with
the rising costs of living.
James Reed, chairman of reed.co.uk, said:
Weve seen a marked rise in the creation of
permanent jobs since the start of the year,
as employers gain confidence and make
long term growth plans for their businesses.
While there continues to be much debate
about zero-hour contracts, this shouldnt
hide the good news that UK employers are
increasingly committed to recruiting per-
manent staff as the recovery takes hold.
Candidates entering the market now have
a wider choice of vacancies than at any
time in the last five years.
