Gods Intent for the Atonement

Introduction:
What was the design or purpose of the atonement?
Did Christ live and die to render a people saveable or did Christ live and die to actually save
a people?
Did Christ secure or obtain the salvation of anyone? Was His death effectual? Did it in fact
accomplish the will of the Father?
What was the will of the Father?
John 6:39 (NASB) "And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that of all that He has given Me I
lose nothing, but raise it up on the last day.
Key Verses: John 17:1 (NASB) These things Jesus spoke; and lifting up His eyes to heaven,
He said, "Father, the hour has come; glorify Thy Son, that the Son may glorify
Thee,
John 17:2 (NASB) even as Thou gavest Him authority over all mankind, that to
all whom Thou hast given Him, He may give eternal life.
Theme: God entrusted Jesus with a people to save and those people will be saved.
Key phrase: those whom thou hast given to me
I. God entrusted Jesus with a people to save and those people will be saved.
A. Jesus authority extends to all people.
John 17:1 (NASB) These things Jesus spoke; and lifting up His eyes to heaven,
He said, "Father, the hour has come; glorify Thy Son, that the Son may glorify
Thee,
John 17:2 (NASB) even as Thou gavest Him authority over all mankind, that to
all whom Thou hast given Him, He may give eternal life.
1. Jesus authority actually extends to all entities.
Mat 28:18 (NASB) And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, "All
authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.
1
2. Thus, no one or no thing can thwart His will.
B. God entrusted a people to Jesus.
John 17:2 (NASB) even as Thou gavest Him authority over all mankind, that to
all whom Thou hast given Him, He may give eternal life.
C. God entrusted a people to Jesus to save.
John 17:2 (NASB) even as Thou gavest Him authority over all mankind,
that to all whom Thou hast given Him, He may give eternal life.
D. All those who are entrusted to Jesus will be saved.
John 17:2 (NASB) even as Thou gavest Him authority over all mankind, that to
all whom Thou hast given Him, He may give eternal life.
John 6:39 (NASB) "And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that of all that He
has given Me I lose nothing, but raise it up on the last day.
John 14:2 (NASB) "In My Father's house are many dwelling places; if it were not
so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you.
John 14:3 (NASB) "And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again,
and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.
II. The roles of prophet, priest and king are exercised in relationship to the people that God
had given to Jesus.
A. The role of prophet is directed towards those to whom God has given to Jesus.
John 17:6 (NASB) "I manifested Thy name to the men whom Thou gavest Me
out of the world; Thine they were, and Thou gavest them to Me, and they have
kept Thy word.
John 17:6 (NASB) "I manifested Thy name to the men whom Thou gavest Me
out of the world; Thine they were, and Thou gavest them to Me, and they have
kept Thy word.
John 17:8 (NASB) for the words which Thou gavest Me I have given to them;
and they received them, and truly understood that I came forth from Thee, and
they believed that Thou didst send Me.
2
John 17:8 (NASB) for the words which Thou gavest Me I have given to them;
and they received them, and truly understood that I came forth from Thee, and
they believed that Thou didst send Me.
John 10:27 (NASB) "My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow
Me;
John 10:28 (NASB) and I give eternal life to them, and they shall never perish;
and no one shall snatch them out of My hand.
John 10:29 (NASB) "My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all;
and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand.
John 10:24 (NASB) The Jews therefore gathered around Him, and were saying to
Him, "How long will You keep us in suspense? If You are the Christ, tell us
plainly."
John 10:25 (NASB) Jesus answered them, "I told you, and you do not believe;
the works that I do in My Father's name, these bear witness of Me.
John 10:26 (NASB) "But you do not believe, because you are not of My sheep.
John 10:27 (NASB) "My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow
Me;
John 10:28 (NASB) and I give eternal life to them, and they shall never perish;
and no one shall snatch them out of My hand.
This has tremendous implications for evangelism and the preaching of Gods
word.
B. The priestly function of Jesus intercession is on behalf of those whom the Father
had given to Jesus.
John 17:9 (NASB) "I ask on their behalf; I do not ask on behalf of the world,
but of those whom Thou hast given Me; for they are Thine;
John 17:20 (NASB) "I do not ask in behalf of these alone, but for those also who
believe in Me through their word;
C. The kingly function of Jesus is exercised over those whom the Father had
entrusted to Jesus.
Those who have been given to Jesus are a part of His kingdom.
John 17:12 (NASB) "While I was with them, I was keeping them in Thy name
which Thou hast given Me; and I guarded them, and not one of them perished but
the son of perdition, that the Scripture might be fulfilled.

John 17:24 (NASB) "Father, I desire that they also, whom Thou hast given Me,
be with Me where I am, in order that they may behold My glory, which Thou hast
given Me; for Thou didst love Me before the foundation of the world.
Heb 2:11 (NASB) For both He who sanctifies and those who are sanctified are all
from one Father; for which reason He is not ashamed to call them brethren,
Heb 2:12 (NASB) saying, "I WILL PROCLAIM THY NAME TO MY
BRETHREN, IN THE MIDST OF THE CONGREGATION I WILL SING THY
PRAISE."
Heb 2:13 (NASB) And again, "I WILL PUT MY TRUST IN HIM." And again,
"BEHOLD, I AND THE CHILDREN WHOM GOD HAS GIVEN ME."
Heb 2:14 (NASB) Since then the children share in flesh and blood, He Himself
likewise also partook of the same, that through death He might render powerless
him who had the power of death, that is, the devil;
Heb 2:15 (NASB) and might deliver those who through fear of death were
subject to slavery all their lives.
Heb 10:10 (NASB) By this will we have been sanctified through the offering of
the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
Heb 10:11 (NASB) And every priest stands daily ministering and offering time
after time the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins;
Heb 10:12 (NASB) but He, having offered one sacrifice for sins for all time, SAT
DOWN AT THE RIGHT HAND OF GOD,
Heb 10:13 (NASB) waiting from that time onward UNTIL HIS ENEMIES BE
MADE A FOOTSTOOL FOR HIS FEET.
Heb 10:14 (NASB) For by one offering He has perfected for all time those who
are sanctified.
Luke 19:10 (NASB) "For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that
which was lost."
Luke 19:11 (NASB) And while they were listening to these things, He went on to
tell a parable, because He was near Jerusalem, and they supposed that the
kingdom of God was going to appear immediately.
Luke 19:12 (NASB) He said therefore, "A certain nobleman went to a distant
country to receive a kingdom for himself, and then return.
Luke 19:13 (NASB) "And he called ten of his slaves, and gave them ten minas,
and said to them, 'Do business with this until I come back.'
Luke 19:14 (NASB) "But his citizens hated him, and sent a delegation after him,
saying, 'We do not want this man to reign over us.'
III. Conclusion:
Next week we will consider specifically the issue of sin bearing.
