GSIDC was directed by the State Government to take up the construction of the bridge connecting Aldona and Corjuem Villages.
M/s. S. N. Bhobe & Associates Pvt. Ltd. were appointed as the Consultants for the bridge. As the width of the river on the
alignment selected was roughly 100 mts. and COP requirement necessitated construction of clear span more than 70 meters, it
was felt appropriate to adopt the Cable-stayed type of structure. It would also add to the scenic beauty of the place, having one
of the historic fort, there by opening the door for opportunities to boost Tourism Industry, there by creating direct / indirect
employment especially to the locals of neighboring villages.
The construction of the Cable-stayed bridge with two-lanes was conceived, inspite of the fact that this bridge would connect only
Corjuem island and the traffic would be initially negligible, for the simple fact that the Corporation had also planned to construct
the Corjuem – Poira bridge, which could help in linking Bicholim and other surrounding areas.
The construction of both these bridges is expected to divert a major traffic from the state highway NH 17 linking Mapusa/Panaji
to Bicholim as it would reduce the distance by about 5 kms to 10 kms and so also the travelling time from various destination on
either side. The traffic on this route would increase substantially and therefore Aldona By-pass road has also been planned, in
addition to the existing bridge infrastructure provided in the region.
SALIENT FEATURES
IMPORTANCE:
The said bridge was completed 3 months ahead of the schedule and will serve as a connection to the beautiful island of Corjuem,
which could be accessed only by ferry services. This will definitely help in all round development of the island. In addition, the
people of Aldona and neighbouring villages would be able to travel to Bicholim, once Sinquerim is connected to Corjuem by
another bridge which is already under construction. The distance from Aldona to Bicholim, which at present is around 30 kms.
will be reduced to just 8 kms.
1. Construction of longer spans using pre-stressed concrete box girder type bridges becomes uneconomical.
2. The illumination of the bridge will serve as a major tourist attraction which is our state’s main money spinner.
3. The superstructure is a simple structure of light weight with steel space truss and RCC deck slab at top
4. The shrinkage and creep effects are minimum.
CONSTRUCTION METHODOLOGY:
1. Automatic batching plants have been used to ensure the best quality control of concrete.
2. Hydraulic Rotatory drill was used for pile foundations which ensures speedy and quality construction
3. Specialised instrumentation techniques are being used to check load carrying capacity of the bridge, monitoring strains and
stresses, vibrations due to wind effect, deflections etc and as such monitoring will be done throughout the defects liability
period..
4. Stressing operations have been fully computerized thereby minimizing any human errors.
