CSE4DWD Data Warehouse Concepts and Design

Laboratory 3 - Solution
In this laboratory you will have a preliminary exercise and then you will work through
two case studies, where you need to implement some of the concepts discussed during
Lecture 3.
Exercise 1
What are the four main steps in the dimensional modelling process?
See Lecture 3 slides 3 & 7-10
Exercise 2
emember the case study discussed in Lab !, and the schema we designed for it.
"he online auction company have now decided they would like to analyse information
related to the online buying experience. "hey have gathered data from the buyer on their
interaction with the seller. "his data includes an experience rating on a # point scale,
where $ is a poor experience and # is an excellent experience, and descriptive comments.
%anagement want to be able to determine whether the buying experience is generally
positive or generally negative and identify factors that influence this.
&an the dimensional schema you designed in Lab ! easily accommodate this re'uest?
What factors do you need to consider? (ow will you implement the re'uest to analyse
buyer feedback?

Exercise 3
) small winery generates wine sales from its cellar door, market stalls and sales to
eateries in its local area. "he winery owners want to expand the distribution of their
wines to eateries further a field. "hey currently have data files containing where each
bottle of wine was sold, the 'uantity in which it was sold and the dollar sales amount.
"hey hope that by looking at this data they will be able to tell which wines were most
popular at particular market stalls and use this as a marketing tool to sell those wines to
eateries in the market*s area.
+ach bottle of wine is described by the following information, the name of the
winery-trade mark-business or brand name. name of wine, a grape variety name, i.e.
*/hira0* or a generic wine style, i.e. *1ry ed*. a 2raphical Indication 30one and-or region
and-or sub4region5, i.e. *6arra 7alley*. vintage 3year of release5, volume 3in ml5. alcohol
content 3as a percentage5. the number of standard drinks the bottle is e'uivalent to. an
allergens declaration 3i.e. egg, milk, nuts etc.5. the name and address of the responsible
entity. and the country of origin.
!
"he winery also wants to increase its sales at the cellar door. "o encourage people to visit
the winery, management plans on holding special event days where they provide light
musical entertainment, complimentary cheese platters with tastings, etc. "hey want to be
able to assess the success of these special event days so information regarding the event,
event date. event day name. event day description. music type. food type 3cheese platters,
luncheon, etc5. event cost. and an estimate of the number of people who attended is
re'uired. 1esign a data warehouse using a star schema to assist the winery in planning its
wine distribution.
