Course Description
ESOL 32 prepares students to understand spoken English and speak at the
intermediate-high ES0L level. Students will develop communicative competence
through listening to and participating in a variety of communicative activities.
Students will also develop knowledge of grammatical structures specifically related
to oral/aural work. In addition, a comprehensive study of American English
pronunciation and intonation patterns will be addressed. These "basics" are
learned, practiced, and reinforced through a variety of communicative tasks and
skills which will allow students to speak and listen more effectively in 1) their
everyday communication with English speakers as well as in 2) the academic setting.

from oral and written sources. Not applicable to the Associate Degree. It's a Basic
Skills Course.
Course Objectives:
By the completion of ESOL 32 students will be able to:
1. Listen to and understand a variety of communicative exchanges both in the
academic and workplace environments.
2. Participate effectively in groups, pair, and individual oral communicative
activities.
3. Recognize, distinguish, and pronounce American English vowels and
consonants clearly, and apply the American English intonation patterns
effectively in most speaking situations.
4. Connect knowledge of intermediate grammatical structures to communicative
needs.
5. Discuss and write about topics and content from audio, visual, and textual
sources, and reason critically to distinguish fact from opinion.
6. Apply study skills and work habits necessary for success in academic and
workplace environments.

Student Learning Outcomes (SLO):
In a prepared speech, student will demonstrate the ability to present an opinion
about a selected class topic in a timed presentation of 5-10 minutes in front of the
students peers, to be delivered three times during the semester, and graded
according to the rubric.

Assignments
The above goals will be achieved through extensive listening, speaking, reading, and
writing assignments both in and out of the class. These include:
1) Actively participating in class discussions, tasks, and projects may include:
a) Academic note-taking

b) Pair, small group, and whole class discussion
c) Interviews, role-play, and debates
2) Producing and practicing the important features of the English sound
system:
a) Vowel and consonant production
b) Intonation work
3) Completing in-class and homework assignments including:
a) Reading assignments in preparation for discussion
b) Written work summarizing, critiquing, and reasoning
c) Completing interviews with native speakers to gather information,
d) Vocabulary, idioms
4) Preparing and presenting a 5-7 minute oral presentation, and weekly
impromptu sharing
5) Listening to news or short speeches each week. Take notes and finish
listening journals.

Grades:
Final course grades will be determined by:
Class Participation -10%
Homework -15%
Presentations -30%
Quizzes/Tests - 30%
Final -15%

Total 100%

As a member of this class, it is your job to be prepared, attend class regularly and
participate fully. Please come on time (11:10). Class is dismissed at 12:35. If you

Three tardies or leaving early is counted as one absence.
