The Royal Geographical Society (with IGB) publishes three academic journals: Area, The

Geographical Journal and Transactions of the Institute of British Geographers and the RGS-IBG
Book Series.

The Society wishes to appoint three new Editors: the Editor for The Geographical Journal; Editor
for Area; and Human Geography Book Series Editor. The current Editors, Professor Klaus Dodds
(Royal Holloway, University of London), Professor Kevin Ward (University of Manchester) and
Professor Neil Coe (National University of Singapore), respectively, complete normal five-year
terms at the end of 2014.

The Geographical J ournal publishes articles and commentaries that make a major
conceptual and/or empirical contribution to stimulating or shaping future public and policy-
orientated agendas across human and physical geography. First published in 1831, historically it
has been the journal of record of the Society. It has exceptionally wide reach and readership.

Area publishes the very best of research and scholarship on all aspects of human and physical
geography. The Editor will have responsibility for human geography papers, and will work
alongside the Co-Editor, Dr Paul Wood (Loughborough University) who has responsibility for
physical and environmental geography submissions. The human geography editor is the senior
editor. The journal is an outlet for new ideas, and particularly welcomes submissions from
postgraduate students and academics at an early stage of their careers. It awards the annual Area
Prize for New Research in Geography.

RGS-IBG Book Series publishes work of the highest international standing. Its emphasis is
on distinctive new developments in human and physical geography, publishing theoretically-
informed and empirically-strong texts. 2013 publications include David Featherstone and Joe
Painter's Spatial Politics: Essays for Doreen Massey; Linda McDowell's Working Lives: Gender,
Migration and Employment in Britain, 1945-2007; and Andrew Barry's Material Politics: Disputes
Along the Pipeline. The human geography editor will work alongside the physical and
environmental geography editor, Professor Tim Allott (University of Manchester). The Editor will
encourage submissions on human geography topics, oversee the review of proposals and draft
manuscripts and provide the enthusiasm to develop the series further.

Each of the new Editors will be recognised scholars with excellent worldwide networks and a broad
interest in, and support for, the full range of research work undertaken in geography. They will be
committed to attracting authors of the highest international standing to publish in the respective
journals/book series. And, particularly in the case of Area, the new Editor should also be committed
to supporting academics at an early stage of their careers. The new Editors should take a pro-

active approach to the role by actively encouraging submissions, promoting the journal and
adopting a sympathetic and diplomatic approach to authors and referees.

How to apply

All letters of application should be sent to Dr Catherine Souch, Head of Research and Higher
Education, at the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) by email (journals@rgs.org).

All applications should state clear the role for which they are applying, describing interest and
qualifications for the role and plans for the journal/book series, along with curriculum vitae and
names of two referees who could provide letters of support.

We encourage applications from individuals or proposals for joint editorship. The closing date for
applications is 5 June 2014. All applications will be treated in confidence. Interviews will be held in
late June/early July with the appointment due to be announced soon thereafter to allow for a
significant period of overlap with the current Editors. A modest honorarium is awarded. The term
will normally be for five years, effective 1 January 2015.

For further details of the post, please contact Dr Catherine Souch, RGS-IBG (contact information
