LATHE UNIT
Making The Gun Barrel
In this unit you are introduced to the most versatile metal
machining tool in the shop. The lathe is used extensively in
industry to produce very accurate cylindrical parts ranging
from wood spindles for furniture manufacturing to the metal parts which are assembled to
create the tools and machines used to manufacture products such as appliances,
automobiles, trains and plains.
By the end of this unit you should know:
1. The parts of the engine lathe.
. !afe operation of the engine lathe with respect to personal protective
e"uipment, machine guards, and safe setup and operation of the machine.
#. $achine shop measuring and layout techni"ues as well as an
understanding of tolerance in measurement using% rulers, digital
calliper, micrometers, the digital height gauge and the surface plate.
&. Interpreting technical drawings and the development of a machining procedure.
'. Basic speed and feed calculations for metal turning operations.
(. Basic fundamental machining techni"ues on the lathe% end facing, center
drilling, parallel turning, taper turning, filing and polishing.

and date.
. $apping out a se"uence of steps and re"uired tools is very important when machining
complex parts. This is called a machining procedure and it is used to formulate a
plan to cut down on unnecessary steps and avoid complicated setups if possible.
2eatly fill out the machining procedure tables provided for the *anon Barrel and
hand it in with your written report.

#. 3rovide a picture and explain the difference between the conventional engine lathe,
turret lathe and the *2* lathe.
