16% increment in tourist arrivals recorded for the month of

April 2014
The Maldives welcomed 105,309 tourists during the month of April 2014, attaining an impressive
growth rate of 16.2% for the month to reach a total of 426,870 for the period from January to April
2014.
Europe remained as the market leader with 51.3%
shares in April 2014. With an additional 53,988 tourists
in April the European arrivals reached a total of 219,058
at the end of first four months of 2014. While a huge
increase of 10.2% was recorded for the month of April
2014 from this region, the overall increase for the
period from January to April 2014 from Europe was
1.1%. All sub regions from Europe, except for Central /
Eastern Europe, posted impressive and above average
growth rates during the month of April 2014 compared with that of 2013. Western European
markets took hold of over 21% of all arrivals from Europe to the Maldives during the period January
to April 2014 with 90,992 tourists. In terms of individual market performances from the region, with
a robust increase of 23.7% during the month of April, Germany strengthened its position as the
number one market. With the additional 10,273 tourists in April the total arrivals from this market
for the period January to April 2014 reached 34,823 increasing the shares to 8.2%. With just 2,000
tourists less, U.K followed closely behind Germany with 7.7% shares. The U.K market saw an
increase of 5% for the period January to April 2014 with a total of 32,759 tourists. Italian market
bounced back with a huge increase of 26.2% for the month of April 2014 resulting in a 1.7% growth
for the period January to April 2014. With a total of 29,281 tourists for the period, Italian market
share stood at 6.9%. Russia and France, being at the fourth and fifth positions respectively from the
region, recorded negative growths for the period January to April 2014. While the Russian market
saw a decline of -7.7% French market posted a negative growth of 3.1% during the period.
Asia and the Pacific region maintained its striking performance registering a growth of 22.4% during
the month of April 2014. With the 43,654 tourists that arrived in April, a total of 179,493 tourists
was recorded for the period from January to April 2014. This was a 23.9% increase compared to that
of 2013 same period. The region represented 42% of all arrivals during period January to April 2014.
All the sub regions posted double digit growth rates for the period, with South East Asia (+67.5%) as
the leading sub region in terms of market growth. However, North East Asia (32%) injected over two
third of the total shares accounted for Asia and the Pacific Region. By individual market
performances, China remained as the overall market leader to the Maldives taking hold of over 26%
shares by the end of April 2014. Indian market saw an increase of 11.9% during the period in review
contributing 3.2% as market shares. The Japanese market posted a negative growth for the month of
April 2014, however overall growth of the market for the period January to April was a positive 5.8%.
The Japanese market share stood at 3% at the end of April 2014. The Korean market posted a robust
50% growth for the period January to April 2014 with the arrival of 10,374 tourists for the period,
which was 2.4% of all arrivals during the period.
With over fourteen thousand arrivals contributing 4.3% shares by the end of April 2014, Americas
was the third leading market generating region for the Maldives. The region posted an impressive
growth rate (+33.8%) for the period January to April 2014 compared with the same period of 2013.
The U.S. market took hold of over 60% of arrivals from the region. Middle East market share was
maintained at 2.6% during the period. This region also posted an impressive growth of 24.2% for the
period. A total of 2,429 tourists arrived in Maldives from Africa region during the period January to
April 2014, which was an increase of 3.8% compared with the same period of 2013. The share of this
region remains insignificant at 0.6%

At the end of April 2014, there were a total of 450 tourist establishments with 30,460 beds
registered at the Ministry of Tourism, out of which on average 291 establishments comprising of
27,008 beds were operational during the period in review. These include 105 tourist resorts (23,060
beds), 17 hotels (1,542 beds), 114 guest houses (1,554 beds) and 54 safari vessels (853 beds). The
total bed nights of these establishments saw an increase of 6.3% during the period reaching a total
of 2,696,698 nights. While the occupancy rate recorded an increase of 2.7% to attain an average of
83.3% for the period, average duration of stay of the tourists saw a decline of 0.3% with 6.4 days at
the end of the period.
