The following scenario shows evidence of how I used the ASCA Ethical Standards for School Counselors in guiding my decision-making with a student/family:
On January 31, 2014, the school received an anonymous phone call into the schools invoice box in regards to a 9 th grade student who had been absent for quite some time. That same day, the district ombudsman emailed me in regards to the same student. The same person also contacted district in regards to this student, which is why the ombudsman contact me. The person on the phone sounded distressed and worried. As a response, I connected with the schools 9 th grade success dean who then got a hold of the students father. After a few days, the student was found at the school (attending class) and so both the success dean and myself met with her. It was noted that the students home situation with the students mother was not safe. CPS was contacted and intake of the situation was noted.
The following ASCA ethical standards were used to guide my decision-making process:
The professional school counselor:
A.1.a. Has a primary obligation to the student, who is to be treated with respect as a unique individual. A.1.b. Is concerned with the educational, academic, career, personal and social needs and encourages the maximum development of every student. A.1.c. Respects the students values and beliefs and does not impose the counselors personal values. A.1.d. Is knowledgeable of laws, regulations and policies relating to students and strives to protect and inform students regarding their rights. A.2.b. Keeps information confidential unless disclosure is required to prevent clear and imminent danger to the student or others or when legal requirements demand that confidential information be revealed. Counselors will consult with appropriate professionals when in doubt as to the validity of an exception. A.5.a. Make referrals when necessary or appropriate to outside resources for student and/or family support. A.7.b. Will attempt to minimize threat to a student and may choose to 1) inform the student of actions to be taken, 2) involve the student in a three-way communication with parents/guardians when breaching confidentiality or 3) allow the student to have input as to how and to whom the breach will be made. B.1.b. Adhere to laws, local guidelines and ethical standards of practice when assisting parents/guardians experiencing family difficulties interfering with the students effectives and welfare.
