I am the Way, the Truth and the Life

Today's Gospel Reading is from John 14:1-12. John 14 is best remembered for the line - "I am the
Way, the Truth and the Life" in paragraph 6. John 14 is also popularly known as the funeral gospel
for paragraphs 2-3 - "In My Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told
you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and
receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also." You can see straight away that
consequently, we have these passages being taken literally; when they really do not quite mean
exactly what they worldly guratively say. The rst impression is therefore incorrect.

That was why when Philip took it literally he ended up asking Jesus - 'Lord, show us the Father,
and it is sufcient for us'. To understand John 14, you have to actually contemplate on the three
different questions posed by Thomas, Philip and Judas respectively in John 14, and Jesus'
response in explanation to them.

There is in fact no 'house' nor 'rooms' in heaven. There is nothing physical or worldly in heaven!
The Father's house is his family, and the rooms are endless room in his heart for love for his
children. We are a spiritual family! We exist in nothingness or spiritual space or void like the air
around us. We are 'one in all, and all in one'!

The Way, the Truth and the Life is just an expression, in the same vein, of the Truth of God's love
as our Spirit Father; how he longs for his Lost Prodigal Son; or as the Good Shepherd he endlessly
looks or longs for his lost sheep!

Jesus does not save us himself on the basis that we do not have to do anything ourselves.
Otherwise he would not have asked us to personally carry our own cross and follow him! It is like
Jesus is not the 'foundation stone' of our lives, or otherwise we might as well all become celibate
priests! Rather, as He told us in metaphor - we are to treat him as the 'cornerstone' of our life.

We should focus on Jesus like someone holding our hands, like our birth mother comforting and
calming us in times of danger. His opening words in paragraph 1 were - "Do not let your hearts be
troubled. Trust in God still, and trust in me." No matter, what we see or how we think or feel that
God has forsaken us in our worldly 'ups and downs', we have to trust God and Jesus like we would
trust our mother to look after us as children. We will see what this fully means if we refer to John
14:27, which is just outside of today's gospel reading - "Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to
you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid."
Whatever the vagaries and misfortunes in our personal worldly lives, let not our hearts be troubled
or be afraid. We will all eventually nd peace in eternal life!

Read carefully paragraphs 10-12, and then you will understand that the Way, the Truth and the
Life, requires you to be the Way, the Truth and the Life, just like you have to carry your own cross
to follow Jesus. It is in that sense that Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life. It is the Way of the
Cross. We each have to carry our own personal cross. Jesus is not going to carry our crosses.
Stop dreaming or fantasising! He is not going to shit and pee for us!

"The words I say to you I do not speak as from myself. It is the Father, living in me, who is doing
this work". God similarly must be living in you, if you expect the good work or result of reconciling
with the Father!

"You must believe me when I say that I am the Father and the Father is in me; believe it on the
evidence of this work, if not for other reason." Similarly if God is in you, and if you live a life that
has God as your cornerstone, your life will be evidence of his work!

"I tell you most solemnly, whoever believes in me will perform the same works as I do myself, he
will perform even greater works, because I am going to the Father". There you go, Jesus has died.
Christ is resurrected. Are we going to show Jesus that we too, are going to do the same or greater
works; that we too will be resurrected to eternal life? The answer comes later in paragraphs 19-20
- "A little while longer and the world will see Me no more, but you will see Me (as the resurrected
Holy Spirit Christ). Because I live (being resurrected), you will live (being resurrected) also. At that
day you will know that I am the Father, and you in Me and I in you." Which brings us back to God
and us as a Spirit Family, that I discussed at the beginning! That we are 'all in one and one in all'!

Think and ponder on this reassurance, that Jesus gave twice in John 14. Do not let your hearts be
troubled by worldly affairs! Have no fear of death!
