The Primary Years Programme Exhibition represents a significant event in the life of a PYP school and student, synthesizing the essential elements of the PYP and sharing them with the whole school community. The PYP Exhibition is the culminating Unit of Inquiry of the Primary Years Programme. It is structured in such a way that Grade 6 learners are challenged to take responsibility for the design, organization and successful completion of an in-depth investigation/inquiry project. In the process of completing this major project, students are required to apply important key concepts, transdisciplinary skills, and attitudes which are at the heart of the work they have been doing in the PYP. In addition, this in-depth inquiry project will offer all learners the challenge, opportunity and power to choose actions, to act in accordance with their choices, and to reflect on these actions in order to make a difference in and to the world. All students must complete an authentic and appropriate action project. This may take place at school or away from school with supervision and parent permission. Students are encouraged to think of a variety of ways to take action! As a culminating experience, it is an opportunity for students to exhibit the attributes of the learner profile that have been developing throughout their engagement with the PYP. In Grade 6 there are five Unit of Inquiry and The Exhibition. The PYP Exhibition has a number of key purposes including the following: For students to engage in an in-depth, collaborative inquiry To provide students with an opportunity to demonstrate independence and responsibility for their own learning To provide students with an opportunity to explore multiple perspectives For students to synthesize and apply their learning of previous years, and to reflect on their journey through the PYP To provide an authentic process for assessing student understanding To demonstrate how students can take action as a result of their learning To unite the students, teachers, parents and other members of the school community in a collaborative experience that incorporates the essential elements of the PYP To celebrate the transition of learners from primary to the next level
This year The Exhibition unit is undertaken the Transdisciplinary theme of How We Express Ourselves An inquiry into the ways in which we discover and express ideas, feelings, nature, culture, beliefs and values; the ways in which we reflect on, extend and enjoy our creativity; our appreciation of the aesthetic.
Central Idea Creating and responding to art develops understanding of ourselves and the world around us.
In order to get students thinking about The Exhibition we brought all the Grade 6 classes together to discuss what they think an Exhibition is. Working in groups and showing last year PYP exhibition movies, discussing during explanation, they then come to a common understanding of what an exhibition means, why they have to do it, and students roles in the Exhibition. For further preparation we ran some assemblies about understanding trans-disciplinary theme, responding to some art work that students and teachers provided, exploring 5 essential elements and did gallery walk for it, list down some issues, and make some questions which related to the central idea and students area of interest. Besides these activities, to broaden understanding about arts we invited Ms Tijana as our guest speaker and did survey to UNESA.
As the culminating PYP experience, the exhibition reflects all the major features of the program and it includes regular and carefully planned assessment. This assessment takes two forms: Ongoing assessment of each individual students contribution to the inquiry and their understanding of the exhibition. Assessment of the Exhibition takes place within the school. It is ongoing and rigorous throughout the whole process. A summative assessment and reflection on the Exhibition process.
What are we doing to prepare students for the Exhibition? Encouraging students to connect their inquiries to their home or school environment, or to issues relevant to children in other parts of the world provides a more meaningful Exhibition experience. Students who have to read material from the internet/book as their primary source of information struggle to understand the concepts and to relate the concepts to their own experiences. Students who are personally invested in their topics are able to sustain a high level of passion and commitment throughout the entire process. Collaboration and the ability to work in a group are essential for success. Organizational systems and time management skills as an individual and a team will allow students to complete the unit with less stress. Thank you parents for your support so far, looking forward for continued collaboration. MATH In this first unit of the second semester, students are continuing their exploration from the previous semester about 3D shapes. Students will develop procedures for finding volume systematically using hands on activities. Teachers questions to provoke students inquiry 1. What is volume? 2. How are base area, height and volume of 3D shapes connected? 3. How do you know that the volume of pyramid is 1/3 of volume of prism (with the same base area and height)?
As part of the measurement unit, students are also learning about ratio. They are expected to achieve these learning goals: 1. To understand the concept of ratio and proportion as a comparison 2. To know different ways of calculating and identifying proportion 3. To apply mathematical skills in using ration to solve real-life problems
