Analyze Learners: The lesson is designed for 6 th grade primary school students. This class has a population of 25 students. There are 10 boys and 15 girls in the class. The students generally enjoy history. Learning styles in this class vary from auditory to visual and kinetic. Students have difficulty maintaining focus during class. In order to overcome this issue lessons will be tailored to accommodate the students attention span, by doing this online lesson. Entry Competencies: The students in this class are skilled in the use of computers, tablets and cellular phone as most of them have learnt from their Information Technology class. Therefore, the students can handle the mouse and keyboard and can manoeuvre through the internet. Students from this age group tend to be fascinated by the computer and other technology. Standards: Cultural & Artistic Dev: The pupil can express his/her own experiences and feelings in a personal way. The pupil can use aspects of visual art purposefully in a piece of work. Mathematics: Develop basic skills and understand simple math language. Can use the four basic operations (+ - : x) according to standard procedures or variations in simple situations. Language & Communication: Can present information or his own opinion in connection with topics that link to his experiences to an audience. Can give written information on various topics. Science & Technology: Can follow and execute steps in simple research. Can apply simple research skills. Social Studies: Understands and knows how to place individual and historical periods on a time line and knows how to use time and time periods. The pupil is able to place periods and events from history on a time table and is able to use indications of time and periods. Objectives: Students will be able to: Identify the pioneers of St. Maarten. To define the term pioneer. Identify the pioneers contribution to St. Maarten List the names of at least ten pioneers. Create a poster on different pioneers Work independently. Strategies: A variety of teacher-centered and student-centered strategies have been designed for this lesson. Select Media, material and Methods: Students will have access to computers, printers, microphones, headphones, word processing software, video and audio editing software, and the Internet. Media: Students will use print, audio, texts, visuals such as photos, and clip art or drawings to create assignments. Technology: Laptop, computer, and tablets. Video, PowerPoint. Materials: Worksheets created and printed by the teacher; multiple choice questions and print out of insects to label. Poster of St. Maartens Pioneers. Speakers: With the aid of speakers the students will be able to hear the clip clearly. The speakers will enhance their learning experience. Computer: A computer will be used to run PowerPoint presentation, and to view video. Utilize Media and Material- Preview the Materials The teacher will listen to the video clip ensuring that it is working and the audio is clear. The teacher will also ensure that the speakers are working as well. The teacher will test the internet to ensure that it is running properly. Prepare the learning environment: This is an online lesson; therefore the teacher will ensure that all students are able to get access to a computer or tablet. She will make arrangement with the school and library so that those who do not have access to a computer at home can go there and work. Prepare the learners: The teacher will inform the students of the activities planned in the classroom. The students will also be informed of the evaluation exercises that they will be given. By doing this the students will be comfortable when completing the lesson. The teacher will also explain to the students that there are five activities which need to be completed. Cultural & Artistic Dev: create a poster of St. Maartens Pioneers on Microsoft Word by using different images. Language & communication: First, define the word Pioneer using wordle and then write one paragraph about any chosen pioneer. Social studies: Create a timeline of the chosen pioneer. Science and Technology: Watch the video about St. Maartens Pioneers and answer the questions. Mathematics: Answer the math problem solving on google doc. Providing the learning experience: The students will view and listen and watch a video clip. They will then be asked to identify the pioneers that they have observed. The clip will be used to introduce the topic. Students will then discuss the pioneers mentioned. Learning participation: Students will be invited to edmodo to discuss amongst themselves the pioneers contribution to St. Maarten. Each person will comment on each others posts. Evaluate/Revise: Teacher will assess learners through discussion, questions and group work. Apart from assessment revision, teacher might ask questions such as: did this lesson meet the objectives, did students gain from this lesson, and was the media appropriate? A discussion with students will involve them to reflect on their learning experience they had in this lesson, and also fill an evaluation of feed backs. Questions for the evaluation will include: How would you rate the exercises of this lesson in relation to your learning experience? Was the teacher able to help you understand the materials? Did the materials help you analyze and relate to real-life situations? What was your least favourite assignment? What was your favourite activity? Did you benefit from this website? Would you like to do it again in the future? Evaluation of strategies, technology and media: This evaluation is to be done by the students. They will get to share their experiences and the problems theyve encountered while doing the lesson. Students are encouraged to ask any questions about what they are required to do for this particular assignment at any time during the lesson. Individually students will use the Internet to research biographical information on their assigned pioneer. Simultaneously, students will be paired with a partner that will critique their performance and evaluate their presentation using a rubric given by the teacher. The rubric is simply feedback telling the students what their strengths and weaknesses are and how they can improve.
