me.
Carol: 3es, if you don$t understand what the artist is trying to communicate, it can
seem a little like that.
David: 7ell, what did you see then. Tell me about some of your fa(orite pictures.
Carol: 1", /$ll try to remember. There was this one huge painting which was mainly
black and gray. / think it was supposed to be a tree although it could ha(e been
anything really 4 you know what these modern paintings are like.
David: 8nd what did you like about that one.
Carol: 2ust the way the tree looked. /t was like the tree was made of hard, metal
spikes and the mi< of white and gray made e(erything look like it was winter. =ery
cold.
David: 7hat else did you see.
Carol: There was this other huge painting which was mainly black and white. /t
looked (ery impressi(e. /t was a sort of spiral and each part of the spiral was a
white disc and they all met in the middle. /t$s really hard to e<plain. But my absolute
fa(orite was a painting we saw in the last room we (isited.
David: 7ho did you go with.
Carol: / went with :elanie and her sister. 8nyway, there was this beautiful painting
and it looked like a meadow and all the grass was purple and red and there was
this green sky in the background. / looked at it and thought of summer. /t also had
this ama>ing %et black frame and the whole effect was (ery impressi(e. / spent
about ten minutes %ust looking at that one.
David: 7ow, that really does sound impressi(e. :aybe / should go and (isit this
e<hibition.
Carol: 3ou really should. / think you would be inspired by some of the paintings. /
think you should look at modern art like food. 3ou need to taste things to see if you
like them. 8t that e<hibition today, some of them were e(en for sale. That last one,
the meadow one, was on sale for ?@,AAA.
David: 6ow much.5 That$s really e<pensi(e. / may go and (isit the e<hibition
tomorrow, but /$m not going to buy anything.
Carol: 1", let me know how it goes, won$t you. #i(e :ark a call. 6e wanted to
come with us today but his aunt was in town so he couldn$t. 6e$d be really keen on
going.
