WatchGuard Facts
WatchGuard management continues to be in fux. Sales, channel, and marketing leadership are either vacant or changed in
executive management. According to the recent IDC security tracker, WG has been losing market share. WatchGuard has not
been focused. WatchGuard has been positioning themselves as Best In Class, but the third party impartial companies have
a completely different view of them. In the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Firewall and several years, WatchGuard has
a Niche Player position. In the NSS Labs NGFW 2013 testing, WatchGuard had extremely poor results and were dead last.
They lack security innovation because they partner with OEM vendors for Application Control, Antivirus, Intrusion Prevention,
SSL VPN, and IPSec agents. WatchGuard is unable to have the full signature set for its antivirus OEM and uses a subset of
Websense web flter.
Poor Performance
WatchGuard has a software architecture, which is not suitable in high performance and low latency deployments.
WatchGuard dramatically decrease in performance with the different traffc packet size. This is not suitable for Service
Providers, BYOD, VoIP, and application latency sensitive deployments. The NSS Labs testing found the WatchGuard had a
dramatic drop in performance with a small packet sizes traffc.
Poor Consolidation & More Complexity
WatchGuard is missing both the cloud and appliance based sandboxing and emulation.
WatchGuardWireless LAN controller functionality is behind and lack the range of indoor, outdoor, and ruggedized wireless
AP support for the different customer deployments.
Missing the Other Third Party Security Assurance Certications
WatchGuard does not have security validation on its antivirus/ antimalware for VB100 and AV Comparative.
