Lesson 12 Homework HW #11 Due at the start of Lesson 13 1. The shown member is being used to resist an internal bending moment, M = 2 kip-ft. Determine the maximum bending stress in the member if the moment is applied: (167 psi and 333 psi) a) about the z axis b) about the y-axis c) sketch the stress distribution for each case.
2. Draw the V and M diagram for the shown T- beam using the graphical method. Determine the maximum bending stress in the member. The cross sectional areas dimensions are as shown. The 15 kN-m moment is about the shown y-axis (the strong axis). Since your entire moment is the same sign, pick the largest c value (c top or c bottom ) to find b- max . Indicate if this is in tension or compression. (Ans: 480 MPa (you indicate (t) or (c))
3. Draw the V and M diagram for the shown beam by writing the equations for M(x) and V(x). Determine the maximum bending stress in the member. The cross sectional areas dimensions are as shown. The 50 kip-ft moment is about the shown z-axis (the strong axis). Since your c top = c bottom , choose the maximum moment to find your maximum stress. (Ans: 57.7 ksi)

Lesson 13 Homework HW #12 Due at the start of Lesson 14
1. Draw the V and M diagram for the shown T- beam using the graphical method. Determine the maximum bending stress in the member. The cross sectional areas dimensions are as shown. (Since c top c bottom consider both the maximum positive moment and maximum moment with their corresponding cs. See Lesson 13 example) (Ans: 135.9 ksi, you indicate if (t) or (c)).
2. The shown laminated wood beam supports a uniformly distributed load of 12 kN/m. If the beams cross-section is to have a height to width ratio of 1.5, determine its smallest width. ( allow = 9 MPa). You can neglect beam weight. (a is approx 0.15 m)
3. A beam is to made of steel that has an allowable bending stress of allow = 24 ksi. Select an appropriate (see your notes for what determines appropriate!) W shape from Appendix C that will carry the shown loading. (W16x40 but your answer must indicate why it is most appropriate like we did in class)
4. Select the most appropriate steel wide flange beam from Appendix C that will safely support the loading shown. The allowable bending stress is allow = 24 ksi. (no hints on this one, trust what you learned in class and from #3)

Lesson 14 Homework HW #13 Due at the start of Lesson 15
1. The shown composite beam is made of wood and reinforced with a steel strap on its bottom. If the beam is subjected to a bending moment of M = 2 kN-m, determine the normal stress at points B and C. Take E wood = 12 GPa and E steel = 200 GPa ( B = 1.71 MPa and C = 7.77 MPa)
2. The reinforced concrete beam has the cross-sectional area shown. If it is subjected to a bending moment of 60 kip-ft, determine the maximum normal stress in each of the steel reinforcing rods and the maximum normal stress in the concrete. Take E conc. = 3600 ksi and E steel = 29000 ksi. (31.9 ksi and 1.72 ksi) (Review section 4-6 and ex 4-4 in your text (6 th edition) for the slight variation for concrete and rebar in composites or page 262 in the 7 th
edition (the 6 th edition example is better).)
3. A steel bar loaded with moments at each end, has an area reduction. This is achieved using shoulder fillets as shown. If the moment is 5 kN-m, determine the maximum normal stress developed in the steel. (just under 350 MPa)
