1. What is qi?
There are various definitions; some say it is a form of energy or vital energy, life force, etc. In
Zhineng Qigong (ZQ) we define it as the finest building block of a substance existing in the form of
information.

2. What is qigong?
The 4 main characteristics of qigong practice include: regulation of the mind, regulation of the body,
regulation of the breath, and cultivation of virtue [1]. In Zhineng Qigong we define qigong as a
practice whereby the mental focus is on life activities; including physical and mental activities.

For instance, when focusing on the physical we have dynamic exercises where the focus is on the
body itself. In static exercise the focus can be on the breathing. In mental activity we have the mind
focusing on itself, as in Zen Buddhism.

3. How qigong works
There are two ways; through self-practice & external qi therapy/ treatment.

Self-practice is about self-healing whereby a practitioner gets well through practicing qigong
exercises. There are thousands of papers found on various clinical databases on the benefits of self-
healing qigong so we will not discuss it in detail here.

2

4. What constitutes self-practice - cultivation of daode
Simply put, it is the cultivation of form and function, where dao is the body and de is the function
of a substance. Take for instance a good cup has good dao (form) and de (function) but a broken
cup that is leaking has a bad form (dao) and also bad function (de) since it does not function well
enough as a cup anymore. For humans dao is the body and de is the function as a member of the
society. Therefore to do well in qigong the function has to be good too. To do that, we also have to
tame the emotions in order to maintain a harmonious society.

5. External qi therapy - on patients.
External qi therapy means that patients do nothing but just receive external qi for healing. External
qi therapy is widely practice worldwide and is getting popular because it is completely non-invasive.
The majority of the patients who turn up at my qigong therapy clinic, or who seek consultation
through the internet love this. To prepare this lecture we have searched the database of Pubmed
from Jan 2000 to July 2012. There are 18 reports on External qi therapy and external qi treatment
[2-19]. They include in vivo and in vitro external qi therapy on cancer cells and the how opposing
intentions of external qi could affect the proliferation of E. Coli.

6. External qi treatment - on any subjects.
External qi treatment has been carried out in Zhineng Qigong since early 1990s. For example
agricultural products treated with external qi were found to produce higher yields.

Photos of some simple external qi treatment experiments.

Frankenstein Cucumber seminar in Austria 2007 where cucumbers were reconnected through external qi treatment.

The report on how opposing intentions of external qi could affect the proliferation of E. Coli [6] is
another example of external qi treatment. Another notable report is the effect of external qi on the
decay of Americium 241 by Yan Xin done in 1980s [20], something that is considered impossible in
the world of physics.

7. Major problems facing qigong research
a. Sampling size: A phase III clinical trial requires 300-3000 patients [21]. While it is easy to get
few hundred patients to pop a pill daily, it is not easy to get patients to practice 1 hour
daily. We can understand the needs of having a large sampling size for newly invented
products/drugs where a patient will need to ingest or inject it and safety is of major
concern. However in qigong practice, patients are not required to take any pills or herbs, it
is completely non-invasive, and perhaps the rules should be changed here. Imposing the
requirements of modern medicine on qigong is like asking basketball players to abide the
rules of football. Almost all the clinical papers on qigong therapy ended with the same
conclusion that reads: while the study shows that qigong is promising in helping this/these
illness(es) the sampling size of the study is too small and further study is needed...

b. Pharmacokinetics of qi: In modern medicine we have to provide the pharmacokinetics
(mechanism of action for a medicine, how it works, etc.) before accepting it as a
therapeutic agent. For instance we have to explain how an antibiotic kills the bacteria;

4

perhaps it works by inhibiting the ability for bacteria to convert glucose into energy or
inhibiting the building up of the cell membrane of bacteria. However we did not have any
plausible explanation on how external qi works until the arrival of the proposed Three
Levels Theory of Matter.

c. Repeatability of trials: in an external qi treatment experiment a lot depends on the qigong
practitioner. However as we all know, the human is a very complex entity and the
temperament of a practitioner determines the ability of a practitioner. And yes, many do
have stage fright. One of the ways to overcome this problem is to train more qigong
practitioners.

d. Funding: most of the clinical trials are conducted or sponsored by pharmaceutical firms
which have patent rights to their invention. This is not the case in qigong.

8. Qigong research:
The 18 reports that we have investigated (PubMed) reveal nothing about how external qi works.
We will look at that later.

9. Simple qigong experiment
Lengthening of the hand - what is working on you?
Put the hands together to measure their size. Drop one hand down and rest the other
one on the thigh. Visualize for 30 seconds that the lowered hand is getting longer and
longer, touching the floor and going through the earth to the other side of the universe.
After that, measure the length of your hands again. Normally the lowered hand will be
noticeably longer. Why? The information in the visualization for the hand to get bigger
has allowed the hand to relax and to elongate. Of course the size of the hand will
restore to normal in a short while.

10. Prelude to Three Levels Theory of Matter
In page 70 of Foundation of Zhineng Qigong Science-Hunyuan Holistic Theory [22], it says: Among
physical mass, energy and information; information is the root of everything, it decides the
transformation process of everything in the universe. Information is divided into simple (or pure)
information and complex information, natural information and consciousness information. The
author further points out: consciousness information of human mental activity can transform into
energy and mass (physical mass).

The author proposed that information can be categorised by 2 methods. The first one is by the
contents of the information pure information and complex information. Pure information is also
the finest building block of the universe and complex information refers to the information of any
other substances found in the universe. The second method is by looking at the characteristics of
the information. Natural information is the information that drives the changes of the universe
naturally and consciousness information is the information from human mental activity that makes
changes to the universe in accordance with the intention.

Between 1991 and 1998, thousands of studies were conducted by Zhineng Qigong Center in China
to validate this hypothesis, many experiments were conducted by various universities and research

5

centres, the good theses were compiled into the Zhineng Qigong Scientific Research Theses Series
of 5 books published in October 1998. They are:

a. Medical Section I [23]- clinical papers on the effects of more than 200 types of diseases, including
randomised controlled trials (RCT) done at Foundation Medicine Research Center, China Medical
Science College, Jiangxi Medical College, Xingcheng Medical Center etc.

b. Agriculture Section II [24] collection of reports on studies done between 1991 to 1997,
including comparative studies done by Guangxi Agriculture University, Anhui Agriculture Research
Centre, Henan Agriculture Research Centre, etc. The reports indicated successes in improving the
harvest and yield of crops from rice to cotton, all with the help of external qi.

c. Industrial Section III [25] a collection of studies on the application of external qi in industrial
areas, including a study done by Haerbin Engineering University in improving the hardness of low
carbon steel.

d. Education Section IV [26] a collection of reports on how schools that introduced Zhineng
Qigong as a form of exercise for teachers and students witnessed marked improvement in
academic performance and bodily health.

e. Helping The Poor Section V [27] an adult patient in a family means the productivity of the
family could be affected. The centre sent out teams of therapists to villages to help the poor. This
book is a collection of how with the practice of Zhineng Qigong and the application of external qi
therapy, patients (mainly farmers in the remote areas) regain health and the family income rises.

11. Three Levels theory of matter: physical level, field level (Electromagnetic field) and
information level
On 24 June 1998, at the The New Phase in Zhineng Qigong Scientific Research - Validating the
Foundation Theory symposium [28], Pang Ming renamed this theory as Three Levels Theory of
Matter. This is a new perspective about the matter of the universe. In the proposed Three Levels
Theory of Matter, the universe is described as being formed by three levels of matter. One is the
level of physical matter including the atomic level, and the macro physical substance level. This
level of matter exists in physical form whereby the energy and information are hidden in the
physical mass. The second level of matter includes electromagnetic waves, gravitational force, etc.
These exist in the form of energy, whereby the mass (of the matter) and information are hidden
within the energy. These two levels of matter have been well researched by modern science. The
third one is the level of matter in the form of information and qi is a form of information. This is a
level that has yet to be recognised by modern science. This level of matter exists objectively
whereby the energy and mass exist in hidden form. Although this level of matter does not exhibit
the characteristics of any form of energy, it can be transformed into various forms of energy and
co-exists with the two forms of matter above. Qi can be subdivided into 3 categories.

a. Primeval hunyuan qi which is the most fundamental matter of the universe. Everything in the
universe evolved from this. This is also the pure information.

b. Hunyuan qi of the all the substances in the universe. This is the complex information. Everything
in the universe has its own form of holistic information in existence.

6

c. Yiyuanti - Qi of the central nervous system of humans. This is the fundamental matter of the
human consciousness. In comparison to the two other levels of qi, it has its initiative and selectivity.
A person who is trained to be able to stay mindful and focused has the ability to impose
information (or qi) to interact with the subjects to bring the desired outcome.

12. Conversion of information into energy

On 14 November 2010 Nature published online an article that says: The
laws of physics say that you can't get energy for nothing worse still,
you will always get out of a system less energy than you put in. But a
nanoscale experiment inspired by a nineteenth-century paradox that
seemed to break those laws now shows that you can generate energy
from information [29].

Masaki Sano, Shoichi Toyabe and colleagues explore connections
between statistical mechanics and information processing in order to
study a much debated idea which seemed to violate the laws of
thermodynamics.

The Japanese researchers set up a very small version of a spiral staircase
and made a molecule climb up this staircase by applying information.
The staircase was made of potential energy and created using electric
fields. The molecule had some thermal energy so it would move in
random directions (Brownian movement). A high-speed camera was
used to photograph the molecule. When it happened to be moving up
the staircase, they let it move freely, but when it happened to be moving
down the staircase, they blocked its motion by inserting an electric field that acted as a virtual wall.

Since the particle was moving to a location of higher potential it required energy to move up the
staircase. Yet the researchers did not input any energy to push the particle up they simply used
the information about which direction it happened to be moving in at any given time to guide the
climb. They were able to move the particle up the stairs, and also measure how much energy was
converted from information.

This is a demonstration of the third tenet of the Three Level of Matter theory, whereby energy is
hidden in the form of information and that it could be converted as such.

13. Double-blind test of the effects of distant intention on water crystal formation [30].

Thank you! Love and appreciation You make me sick, I will kill you!

7

In 2006, Radin D and Emoto M conducted a double-blind experiment to ascertain the hypothesis
that the ice crystal formed by water can be affected by the information imposed onto that water. A
group of approximately 2,000 people in Tokyo focused positive intentions toward water samples
located inside an electromagnetically shielded room in California. The participants were unaware of
similar water samples set aside in a different location as controls. Ice crystals formed from both
sets of water samples were blindly identified and photographed, and the resulting images were
blindly assessed for aesthetic appeal by 100 independent judges. The results indicated that crystals
from the treated water were given higher scores for aesthetic appeal than those from the control
water (P = .001, one-tailed), lending support to the hypothesis.

The study has proven that human consciousness can make changes to physical matter. However,
Radin and Emoto did not conduct further research into where the energy to make the changes
comes from. However the experiment by Masaki Sano, Shoichi Toyabe and colleagues has
provided a plausible answer: information can be converted into energy and therefore make
changes to a subject.

14. Effect of thoughts on physical reality [31]
The rice experiment proposed by Masaru Emoto in 2006 and repeated by many has again indicated
that human intentions could make changes to physical reality. In this experiment 2 jars of cooked
rice were placed at the corridor of a school. One is labeled Thank you! and the other jar You
fool! and students who passed by where asked to say the labels on the jars out loud. The result
after one month was shocking. The rice in the container with positive thoughts had barely changed
while the other one was moldy and rotten.

15. Research by the International Consciousness Research Lab (ICRL)
International Consciousness Research Laboratories [32] has been studying the effect of the mind on
the physical world by using a Random Event Generator - REG. A REG is essentially an electronic coin
flipper. If we flip a coin 10 times, statistically we would get 5 heads and 5 tails. We will not be
bothered if we get 6 heads though. However if we flip it 10 million times and get 6 million heads
then we know something is influencing the outcome. The REG is a quantum mechanical device
which is not affected by normal external physical forces. Its output is fundamentally random and
impossible to predict [33].

8

A REG flips 200,000 times per second and when it is left unattended will perform statistically
normal. However when an operator put in the intention for the REG to perform either way, the
output deviates very slightly from the norm and it is something that cannot be explained by
modern physics.

16. Mind Lamp

The Mind Lamp that will change colors on command.

Subsequent to the invention of REG, Psyleron invented a lamp called Mind Lamp [34]. The lamp can
change colors on its own or by following an order from the mind. Interestingly the company found
that to get the desired color one just has to focus on the end result, instead of thinking step by step
of how the system will work. This is just like what is being done in external qi treatment just wish
for the desired outcome.

17. Resonance vs qigong state

In the book "Consciousness and the source of reality" [35] ICRL reports: informal operator reports
alluded to a requisite sense of "resonance" between the operator and the device, task or purpose,
whenever anomalous results were being achieved. This is commonly known among qigong
practitioners as qigong state or meditative state whereby the operator/practitioner formed a
holistic entity with the device, task, or purpose. The unique brain wave pattern during qigong state
(meditative state or highly mindful, focused state) has been reported by Richard Davidson of
University of Wisconsin in the early 2000s [36] and the study by Lagopoulos and friends in 2009
[37]. Putting that together with the 'resonance' finding of ICRL we are able to see that a rightly
trained qigong practitioner who is able to remain mindful and focused will bring a much stronger
result than an untrained person. The intention of a trained qigong therapist can bring a much
bigger change to a subject.

ICRL did not do further research into what makes the changes to REG, or where the energy comes
from. Again the experiment by Masaki Sano, Shoichi Toyabe and colleagues supports the
hypothesis by Pang Ming: information can be converted into energy and therefore make changes
to subjects.

9

From the above it can be deduced that information can be converted into energy and human
consciousness (thought, intention) is a form of information.

18. Is it difficult to tell whether a person is in a mindful (qigong or meditative) state?

A qigong practitioner who is trained to stay mindful and focused has the ability to impose qi (or
information) to interact with the subjects to bring the desired outcome. How do we tell whether a
practitioner is able to stay mindful and focused - by observing the brain waves.

Freer Logic is a company that has invented a device called BodyWave [38].
The device can measure whether a person is in a mindful state. It is now
used by Ontario Power Generation, a company running a nuclear power
station, to drill their employees. NASA and a NASCAR team in North
Carolina are also employing the device to train their staff to work mindfully.

What we want to point out is: it is not difficult to tell whether a person is in a qigong/meditative
state.

19. Information Field by ICRL vs Qi field by Zhineng Qigong
ICRL has also explored the output of REGs exposed to various group activities or environments.
They named it FieldREG experiments where the field is also named consciousness information
field. This is similar to the term qi field in Zhineng Qigong [39]. What is the significance of a qi
field? Ever wonder why it never feels good to be around a mortuary but it is the other way round
when we are in a place for prayer?

20. The understandings of modern science on matter.
What is the relationship between physical matter and energy?
Physical matter can be converted into energy and vice versa. The theory E=mc by Albert Einstein
and the modern studies on fusion and fission have explained this clearly.

What is the relationship between energy and information?
The study by Toyabe and colleagues has shown that information can be converted into energy.

The Three Levels Theory of Matter proposes that the accumulation of information forms energy;
and the accumulation of energy forms physical matter. The reverse is also true.

21. So how does qi work?
The findings of Masaki Sano, Shoichi Toyabe and colleagues [29] in 2010 on conversion of
information into pure energy has supported the Three Levels Theory of Matter as a plausible
answer to many qigong effects: Information can be converted into energy, and human
consciousness and intention is a form of information. It helps to explain where the energy for
"Double Blind Study Of the effects of distant intention on water crystal formation comes from and
the many research results by ICRL.

Applying the Three Levels Theory of Matter explains how E. Coli proliferation can be promoted or
suppressed by the applied intention [6], how cancer cells can be killed through EQT by Yan Xing

10

Qigong [2-5], and how EQT can regulate autonomic cardiac tone [16]. It also provides the
explanation for the rest of the clinical studies and trials [6-19].

Applying the proposed Three Levels Theory of Matter explains the conclusion a healer's intent
may affect the proliferation of microbes with specificity and directivity in the study entitled
Effects of external qi of qigong with opposing intentions on proliferation of Escherichia coli.[6]
Note that the hypothesis has pointed out that the information of human consciousness has the
initiative and selectivity to bring desired changes to a subject.

The hypothesis also explains how cancer cells can be killed through external qi therapy by Yan Xing
Qigong [18-21] without affecting normal cells. It explains how qigong therapy stabilizes the
sympathovagal function more than placebo therapy in the Effects of Qi Therapy on cardiac
autonomic tone: a randomized placebo controlled study. [12]

The hypothesis also explains how Qi therapy may be an effective complementary therapy for
managing the symptoms of PMS.[16] It also provides the explanation to all the clinical studies and
trials [2-19].

22. Three Levels Theory of Matter is the answer to the many qigong phenomena and researches.
In fact the Three Levels Theory of Matter hypothesis does not only provide the answer to the
mechanism of EQT but also explains how qigong phenomena come about, how distant healing and
prayer healing work, how imposing positive or negative information onto bottled rice would
change its development, how prenatal education helps, etc.

23. What do we do next? Validate the Three Levels Theory of Matter?.. or has it already been
validated?
Please join us to validate this important hypothesis!
