QUESTIONNAIRE

Bishops College is a reputed girls school in Colombo, Sri Lanka, which has
excelled well in both academic and extra-curricular activities.
This questionnaire is distributed as a part of applying for the International
School Award conducted by the British Council.

Name of the Project- Future Leaders (in the Corporate World)
Objectives-Bridge the gap between school and the corporate world by engaging
the students in activities related to leadership development both at local and at
International levels.

1. State the country in which you receive your education?
England, United Kingdom

2. State the Educational Institute you attend.
The Heathland College

3. Do you think leaders are born or made?
I think that people can be born with leadership within them but that leaders are
truly made later on; influenced by their surroundings, the way they grow up. The
skills they may be born with have to be developed, therefore a little bit of both
plays into it.
4. In your opinion, what are the attributes needed in order to become a true
leader?
Quiet resolution - an effective leader has the resolve to see every task
through to the end
The hardihood to take risks - being unafraid to take risks can result in great
achievements
The readiness to share in rewards with subordinates - A great leader,
although supremely confident, humbly acknowledges that no success, no
matter how large of a role he personally played in bringing it to fruition, is a
wholly solo effort
An equal readiness to take the blame when things go adversely - true
leaders will take responsibility for all consequences of their decisions, even
the bad ones
The nerve to survive storm and disappointment and to face each new day
with the score sheet wiped clean; neither dwelling on ones successes, nor
accepting discouragement from ones failures - great leaders focus on the
things they can change and influence, and the past is not one of those
things. If you fail, learn from it and then immediately cease to dwell on it.

5. Do you think the school contributes to enhance such attributes?
Yes. Within our school there is great opportunity for leadership, whether it is
through becoming a prefect, head boy or head girl, or leading a class discussion.
In my school especially, there is value in taking charge of your own learning and
that translates into qualities of leadership within students.

6. Name a few activities/events/projects done in your school or any other
school within your country to develop leadership skills in students.
Many workshops, almost every term from different companies that teach the
skills of god leadership. Also, trips and competitions for gifted and talented
students to different universities whereby we work in team with a leader etc.
7. Do clubs and associations within your school help to develop these skills? If
so, how?
Yes, a main one within clubs such as debating and sports. When playing sports,
there is a role of leadership to fill in being captain of a team, and that gets
students used to being in a commanding role and directing others. Debating
provides the chance to lead a team in that way as well, but in a different arena.
8. How do you think subjects taught in classroom contribute in molding future
leaders?
Direction is a main contributor. When learning, students are taught skills which
they then must apply later on. These are the sort of skills leaders need in future,
being able to apply prior knowledge to different situations by taking control.
9. Are there any programmes conducted at a National level in this regard?
There is a youth ministry in the UK where young people can apply to be ministers
for their borough/town, which gives great opportunity for future leadership roles.
10. Provide more details related to the above topic, if you wish.
