Final Examination Spring 2005

b A child sits in a barbers chair and views a mirror in front
of him. However the bottom of the mirror is 25 cm above
his eyes. Given the dimensions in fig 3 calculate the
following:
(i) Howhighupthewallisthechildabletosee.(2Marks)
(ii) Whatangleshouldthemirrorbetiltedforthechildto

Final Examination Spring 2008
a) Show that if a plain mirror rotates through an angle
0
, the reflected ray will rotate twice

0
.
b) An Engineering student developed the
apparatus in Figure 1 to determine the
change in length of a specimen rod when
subjected to different temperature changes.
The specimen is made identical in length to a
standard reference and oriented parallel to
the reference. A laser beam passing exactly
halfway between the rods and parallel to
them strikes a plain mirror and is reflected
back on a graduated scale as shown. Initially
when the apparatus is set up the reflected
beam strikes the ZERO position.
i. When the specimen is subjected to some temperature change, describe and
explain what would be the effect on the laser spot on the graduated scale.
ii. If the rods are exactly 750mm in length and are 200mm apart, calculate the
difference in length in the rods if the spot appeared 5.5 mm to the right of ZERO.
c) A Plain mirror 20 cm long rest on the horizontal floor with its closer edge 1.25 m away
from a vertical wall. How close should a man 165 cm tall (eye level) approach the wall in
order to see the image of a spot 5.00 meters on the wall above the floor in the mirror?

Final Examination Fall 2007

Fig 1 shows a scanner in which a laser beam is directed on
to a rotating plain mirror. The mirror has a diameter of
25mm and the laser bean is offset from centre by 10mm. As
the mirror rotates it intersects the beam which is reflected
towards the target area.
a. Draw a ray diagram showing how the reflected beam
will sweep an arc across the target area. [2 mks]
b. Calculate the angle of the arc through which the beam
scans. [4 mks]
c. What should be the offset if the reflected ray is to scan
an arc of 75
o
. [4 mks]
d. If the beam must scan the target area at a rate of 30 times per sec, what should be the
speed of rotation of the mirror (in rev per min)? [2 mks]

Final examination fall 2004
Figure 1 shows a security camera mounted, at A, 2.5
meters above the floor and 3.5 meters away from a
vertical plain mirror.

i. If the bottom edge of the mirror O is 1.75 meters
above the floor, calculate the distance B vertically
below the camera that can be viewed in the mirror.
(4 marks)

ii. If the mirror is pivoted at O and can be tilted back
and forth, then calculate the minimum angle that
the mirror must be tilted in order to view the point
C on the ground directly below the camera.
