The Editor,
The Hindu
New Delhi
Sri,
Through the columns of your esteemed daily, I wish to express my views about the impact of adult
graded cinemas on young minds. Films are a craze among the young people. Full of foreign imitation,
vulgarity, sex, cheapromance, catchy and unhealthy songs etc., have their harmful influence on the
modern youth. The fashions and pseudo-adventures of their heros and heroines will sooner than later get
into trouble. The films are responsible to a great extent for the acts of indiscipline, disobedience by the
youths of today. It is absolutely necessary that our censor authorities should be strict and not approve a
movie if it is likely to mislead the youth.
Yours faithfully,
Karan Ahuja
2. Write a paragraph on any one of the following top-ies in not more than 150 words:
(Marks: 8)
i) Importance of Blood Donation
ii) The Car Craze and Pollution
iii) The Mosquito Menace
ANS: (i) Importance of Blood Donation
Air and water sustain human life. Besides the human body also requires blood for all its
functions, toss or lack of blood spells doom to the very existence of man t Often we come across
accident victims who need immediate blood transfusion or expectant mothers whose loss of blood
has to be made good forthwith or cases of surgery Where the patients need several bottles of blood
for survival. Be in war or peace, blood donation is a laudable act and blessed are those who come to
the rescue of their fellowmen. By donating blood we make other people live who need our blood.
There cannot be a better form of charity or good work than simply donating one's blood to the needy
ones. One's body produces enough blood to sustain oneself and even can spare a few pints of blood
to save the precious lives of the injured and the sick ones. This is the basic concept of blood
donation. It has no improper effect on the person who donates blood. There is a mistaken belief that
blood once pumped out cannot be replenished and the .donor is doomed to suffer. Far from it. the
body makes and replaces the blood loss within a few weeks.

great service to mankind. It has brought about changes in our every day life. In every sphere, we

communication. These have helped to destroy the barriers of time and distance. Now

4. Make a precis of the following passage in English in your own words, in about one-
third, on the special precis Sheets provided.
Marks will also be deducted if your precis is much longer or shorter than the prescribed
length. The precis-sheets should be securely fastened inside the answer book. State the
number of words used by you in your precis :
(Marks 10)
There is a famous speech recorded of an old Norseman, thoroughly characteristic of the
Teuton. "I believe neither In idols nor in demons," said he, "I put my sole trust in my own strength of
body and soul." The ancient crest of a pickaxe with the motto of "Either I will find a way or make
one," was an expression of the same sturdy, independence which to this day distinguishes the
descendants of the Norsemen. Indeed nothing could be more characteristic of the Scandinavian
mythology, than that it had a god with a hammer. A man's character is seen in small matters, and
from even so slight test as the mode in which a man wields a hammer, his energy may in some
measure be inferred.
Thus an eminent Frenchman hits off in a single phrase the characteristic quality of the
inhabitants of a particular district in which a .friend of his proposed to settle and buy land. "Beware,"
said he, "of making a purchase there; I know the men of that department; the pupils who come from
it to our veterinary school at Paris do not strike hard upon the anvil; they want energy; and you will
not get a satisfactory return on any capital you may invest there." A fine and just appreciation of
character, indicating the thoughtful observer: and strikingly, illustrative of the fact that it is the
energy of the individual Men that gives strength to a State, and confers a value even upon the very
soil which they cultivate.
The cultivation of this quality is of the greatest importance; resolute determination in the
pursuit of worthy objects being the foundation of all true greatness of character. Energy enables a
man to force his way through irksome drudgery and dry details, and carries him onward and upward
in every station in life, It accomplishes more than genius, with not one-half the disappointment and
peril. It is not eminent talent that is required to ensure success in any pursuit, so much as purpose,
not merely the power to achieve, but the will to labour energetically and persevering. Hence
energy of will may be defined to be the very central power of character in a man in a word, it is
the Man himself. It gives impulse to his every action, and soul to every effort. Thus hope is based on
it, and it is hope that gives the real perfume to life.
ANS. : Title : Energy-basis of character.
Precis : The belief that Norse-men have trust in pure strength is amply revealed by the fact
that their god is represented carrying hammer. Strength is an impression of sturdy independence
and this is maintained by Norsemen to the present day. Energy is an extremely important quality in
a truly great character. It is the energetic individuals who make a state strong. Energy can ac-
complish more than even genius and talent, what matters in life is not the power to achieve but the
will to work ceaselessly for the goal. This needs energy. A good and minute observer can
understand the character of a person by seeing his trivial actions. The cultivation of this quality
(energy) is of paramount importance as it provides the resolution so badly needed in pursuit of
noble objects and is the very basis of true and great character.
5. Read the following passage and answer the questions given below: (Marks 10)
Keshav and Yash lived in neighbouring villages. Once, a fair was held nearby and they set
off from their homes hoping to do some business there. Keshav his sack with cheap cotton, overlaid
it with a layer of fine wool, and set off for the fair. Meanwhile Yash, collected some old clothes, put

14th April 2014
Dear Pahul,
Hope you are doing well. I havent heard from you since long. You must be busy in your frantic life but dont forget
to take care of your health amidst all as you know sound health leads to sound mind. Recently, I attended a seminar
on Morning Walk which inspired me to an extent that I have started taking a morning walk everyday and I think it
will be beneficial for you too.
Walking is one of the easiest ways to stay fit and if it is taken in the morning then it will be more beneficial. The
earliest hours in the morning would give fresh oxygen and quality time to spend with greenery. It energizes the
whole body and keeps one active throughout the day. It gives natural energy boost and revitalizes us. It also helps in
getting better sleep. At the seminar the speaker apprised us on how morning walk helps in controlling blood sugar
level and blood pressure. It is like a medicine for suppressing hypertension and stress which are common features of
todays lifestyle.
Daily walk helps in improving muscular strength and metabolism of the body which helps us in reducing our weight.
Even I feel more active and healthier since I have started morning walk.
I know it is very difficult to wake up early in the morning and taking out time from your hectic schedule. It will be
grueling for initial days but it gives long run benefits.
I hope you will be able to take out just 30 minutes for yourself. Wishing you healthier and happy life.
Yours sincerely,

TOPIC- Role of Youth in Nation Building
If the youth of the nation decide to take up the task to nation building for three years. Give three possible
consequences if such a thing happens
Youth is the future builder of the nation. They should be well equipped morally to discharge their duty to their
motherland. If the youth of India decide to take up the nation building for three years, the following consequences
will be there.
(1) Youth can undergo any type of sacrifice. They have the vigor vitality and stamina to face the greatest hardship.
They can fight for national integration. They can improve the hygienic conditions in villages by adult education.
(2) Youth are generally idealistic in nature. They would fight against the false politicians. They expose the problems
of youth and they demand the constitutional right to work, and try to eradicate poverty and unemployment in the
country.
(3) When youth want to decide to take part three years in the main stream of the people. They know the hard ships
of the villagers. They would undertake vocational and technical education to the villagers. They provocateur the
people to take part in modern agriculture.
There are the main points friends. You can add some more stuff to make it more readable. You can use those
standard facebook quotes like Youth are not useless, they are used less etc to bring more weight to your essay. But
the point you should keep in mind is, Quality is important than quantity.
So dont try to fill the paper with useless stuff. All the best.

SBI POs Exam-Descriptive Topic-Womens Safety at Workplace
There was a time when Indian women were expected to stay at home only to look after the needs of the family
members. Over the past few decades, workplace has become much more diverse. Though men still outnumber
women in the workplace, the percentage of women working has steadily increased.
Today we believe that mental make-up of our society has changed and women are treated at par with their male
counterparts. But the reality is that there are still several issues and problems that women face at workplace.
Sometimes, they are not treated equally and are considered as inferior to their male co-workers. At some places,
female workers do not get same salary for same work performed by male workers. Yet the major problem that
women face in their workplaces is security and sexual harassment. It is an issue of concern and threat to our society.
At times employers and even male co-workers try to take advantage of female workers by crossing their line of
decency. This kind of unwelcome behavior may make a female feel offended and humiliated. We read about such
types of incidents very often.
Indian women are seldom safe at their workplaces. There is a dire need to change the scenario. We need to make
our mothers, sisters, daughters and wives feel more secure and protected, only then they can grow and achieve their
goals in professional lives. If this problem continue to persist, there will be increased absenteeism, reduced
efficiency, damage to their image and above all, their freedom will be snatched which they have got just a few years
ago.
Many authorities are working towards it and a few Acts have also been enacted. It should also be the responsibility
of employers to provide safe and secure working environment to women. We need to ensure that this problem is
plucked out of the system at the earliest.

SBI PO Exam-2014- Descriptive Topics- Poverty Alleviation
Poverty is that state of human beings where they are not able to afford even the basic necessities of life i.e. food,
shelter, clothing, education, healthcare etc. poverty alleviation means improving the living conditions of people who
are poor. We know that with the economic growth, poverty has reduced with good numbers in India. Yet if we look
around our locality we notice many families still living in slums and on roadsides. Shall we just wring our hands and
mourn over the misery of the poor?
It is a high time for us to take some initiative to remove this stigma on our society from the root. At the bottom, we
need to control the population explosion. It is the main cause of poor getting poorer. They think that number of
children will be additional earning hand for them, but they are not bothered about its consequences. Raising so many
kids becomes the problem in itself rather than providing any solution. So, local authorities and NGOs should make
them aware of the benefits of having small family. Another related cause is illiteracy. People in slums must be
educated and they should be taught some vocational skills also which can eventually help them to make a living out
of it.
The local authorities have already started working in this direction as now schools reserve certain percentage of seats
for people from such background. Furthermore, setting up of more industries in the city will help in increasing the job
opportunities for jobless poor people. Business houses can also help in alleviating poverty by training and hiring
unemployed workers, charging less for goods and services from low income group and by purchasing ancillary goods
and services from local enterprises that employ unemployed workers. Banks can also do their bit by providing micro-
finance to the poor who are willing to make a difference in their lives.
The concept of self-help groups should also be encouraged. Tourism can also be used as a vehicle to eradicate
poverty if well planned. Many people are dying of the hunger and non-availability of good healthcare facilities; some
are even committing suicide because they are not able to get out of this vicious circle. So, it is an imperative situation
that is to be handled at its earliest.

Descriptive Topics-Obesity Causes & Preventive Measures
Obesity is a condition where excess body fat accumulates to the extent that it starts to adversely affect the health of
an individual. In the recent years, it has become a global phenomenon. India has an increasing number of obesity
cases which has become a threat for us. Obesity increases risk for various diseases and it can even cause a death.
The foremost reason of obesity is bad eating habits. The food habits or eating habits means what and how people
eat. Unhealthy eating habits such as eating fast food, processed food, food containing preservatives, tinned food,
drinking too much alcohol and carbonated beverages which are taken as synonyms for toilet cleaner; and overeating
can result into obesity. If you look around, you will realize that new generation is utterly dependent on junk food to
satisfy their appetite. However, a bad diet is not the only thing that causes obesity, lifestyle of an individual also
affect health specially an abdomen.
Todays generation do not have a fixed time schedule for taking meals, sometimes they even skip a meal because of
their hectic life. Another trigger is lack of physical activity owing to which body does not use the energy it gets from
the food we eat and additional calories get stored as fat in the body. Some people tend to put an additional weight
because of genetic factors while some might have medical ailment which leads to weight gain and obesity.
Because of all the above discussed reasons, obesity is increasing not only in elders but in children also. It is an issue
of great concern as our new generation is becoming unhealthy and lethargic. Altering eating habits by including more
natural food in your diet, drinking more water, avoiding fast food and carbonated beverages can help an individual to
get rid of obesity.
An effort can be made to change the disturbed lifestyle; one should take proper meals in time, rather than skipping
it. Regular exercise also helps to get back into shape and stay fit. Some medical treatments are also available. To
have sound mind, we need to have sound health. So our ultimate aim should be to curb the obesity as it is rightly
said, Health is Wealth.

Descriptive Topics-Role of Banks in Socio-Economic Development: Arguments For & Against
For a developing country like India where numbers of people still are deprived of the basic necessities of life, notion
of socio-economic development is of great concern. Socio-economic development means an overall development of a
country in terms of industrial development, development of agriculture and trade, GDP, literacy, levels of
employment rate etc. but the issue is how it can be done, whether banks should be operated as tools for
improvement of socio-economic status of the people have money to save of the country or banks should be left with
commercial motive?
Initially banks were regarded as an intermediary between those who have money to save and those who are in need
of it. With the passage of time and adoption of LPG policy has made banks to widen their scope of activities. And
today, banks are considered as leaders in economic development. For socio-economic development, we need money
and banks are the only fountain head for capital formation in the country. In India, large amount of untapped capital
is available for investment. Only we need exploiting this idle capital and this can be done only through banks.
With the help of their new schemes in different areas of operation, banks can also generate direct and indirect
employment which will help in raising standard of living of the society. Banks have started looking after the needs of
the small farmers and the new entrepreneurs. Therefore, banks can be used as a device for socio-economic
development in the country.
On the contrary, banks are profit making organizations. If banks focus on socio-economic development of a country
by charging low interest rate and providing services at nominal rates then they wont be able to survive in the
market. It will just overburden the banks which affect the effectiveness of their primary functions.

2years to 10years from now? And so on.
I have come up with a list which showed me the best version on me that I can be. The primary aim of my life is
living with a purpose and passion. Everyday living for my Guru and Glory of God. Be a great daughter, mother, sister
and a soulmate. Fostering meaningful relationships with family and friends. I want to be a person who can bring
smiles on peoples face and take away all their worries and stress. I want to be someone who never gives up and
keep on learning throught my life from my mistakes and experiences. I want to help and give as much as I can.
Another professional aim of my life is to be a successful Banker. to achieve this aim, I wake up everyday with a
positive mind. I meditate, to balance the uneven graph of my mind. I work hard and give my 100% as it will help me
to achieve my goals. Reading newspapers, have broader goals in my life instead of just being selfish. Studying 5-6
hours daily, analysing my performance, strenthening my positive points and overcoming my weaknesses.
I want to be a successful banker so that I can financially support my family. Working in a bank is a secure job where
a person works according to the schedule set by the government of India. A banker is a society co-ordinater who can
associate and help the people with their money matters, financial aspects, providing employment and education
through loan facilities and many more.
A bankers job is not only confined to himself and his family, but it helps the public also in different matters. So it
may be concluded that my aim to be a banker is the only way by which I can achieve my goals, dreams happiness
for my family and helping the public as a whole.

Descriptive Topic-Write A letter to the Chairman of SBI for opening a Branch of the Bank in your
locality.
The Chairman
State Bank Of India
Mumbai.
Madam,
Request for opening a Branch of the SBI in Sector-49, Chandigarh
I am an account holder of your esteemed Bank and I am a resident of Sector-49-D, Chandigarh, situated on the
Southern part of the city. About 5000 families living in our vicinity are facing difficulties to avail bank services. For
any banking transaction, these people have to travel to the Branch of SBI in Sector-17, which is about 10 K.Ms. from
our Sector.
It takes great effort, time and money to travel to that Branch. Most of the customers are Pensioners, government
employees and businessmen. Most of your customers are quite affluent and have sizeable balances in their accounts.
For the pensioners, commuting to Sector 17, Chandigarh Branch becomes very difficult.
In view of above, opening a Branch in our area will really help us and reduce workload on Sector 17 Branch. Also it
will attract more business for the bank as our Sector is surrounded by schools, colleges and coaching institutes,
which will give the new Branch good business & excellent profits.
I therefore, on behalf of all the residents of my sector, request you to consider opening a branch in our area, on a
priority basis, to mitigate the sufferings of the Senior Citizens.
Thanking you,
Yours sincerely,

SBI PO Exam-Descriptive Topics-Role of Small Scale Industries in Indian Economy
Industry is the segment of economy concerned with production of goods. Small Scale Industry(SSI) is a term which
applies to the small entrepreneurs who are engaged in manufacture and production on a micro scale. As per MSME
Act 2006, small enterprises are those where investment in plant and machinery lies between Rs. 25 lakh to Rs. 5
crore and investment in equipment lies between Rs.10 lakh to Rs. 2 crore for service sector.
The small scale industry plays a vital role in the growth of the country. The small scale sector has grown rapidly over
the years. The SSIs have been playing an important role in the growth process of Indian economy in spite of stiff
competition from the large sector. It is believed that SSIs have been a major source employment generation because
these are labor intensive industries. SSI ensures equitable distribution of the national income and wealth in our
society which is largely characterized by more concentration of income and wealth.
Prior to the concept of SSI, industries were established only in urban areas which rendered rural areas
underdeveloped. But SSIs have helped the economy in prompting balanced development of industries across all the
regions of the economy. This has led to upliftment of backward areas of the country, which in turn raised standard of
living of people living in rural areas significantly. SSIs also help in entrepreneurial development as it provides self
employment to educated unemployed. It also generates feeling of self reliance amongst the people. Huge amount of
latent resources are being mobilized by small scale sector for the development of the economy. SSIs have promoted
indigenous products. Moreover, export of products of small scale industries has increased over the period of time.
SSIs can facilitate growth and development of large scale industries also by providing various parts and components
to LSIs. SSIs serve as ancillary units to LSIs. It is evident that SSIs play an important role in overall development of
the Indian economy.

SBI PO Descriptive Topics-India of my Dreams
Our dreams are the same as our desires, hopes and thoughts. Everyone in this world dreams. I have a dream too. A
dream about my motherland, India. In India of my dreams, there will be no poverty, no illiteracy, no unemployment,
no corruption, no violence and no terrorism. India will be a beautiful place to live in, where everyone will be able to
get three square meals to eat, clothes to wear and a home for living.
There will be cleanliness, hygiene, better medical facilities, better infrastructure, equal rights and only honesty and
integrity will prevail. I would love my country to rise to the top with an all-round progress where there will be peace
and harmony. It will be a country where women are respected and people from all religions co-exist. India will be a
wonderland of dreams.
There was a time when India was considered as a Golden Bird. This was because of its riches, vast natural
resources, our rich cultural heritage and vast knowledge in every aspect of life. However, in recent past, country has
witnessed a sharp decline in its over-all image. There are number of scams taking place due to corruption, people are
dying of hunger and youngsters are getting into illicit professions due to unemployment.
India has become a place where countless women are tortured, beaten and murdered each day. There are no
hygiene standards which is causing dissemination of dreadful diseases. Masses live in slum areas. This is a real
picture of our India.
I want to see India free from all these problems that are bringing bad name to our country. I wish the poverty to be
banished which is the sole cause for many other problems facing India. I want India to justify its old title a Golden
Bird which is a land of peace, prosperity, wealth and immense knowledge.

Descriptive Topics-Write a Letter to the Chairman, Railway Board complaining about the deterioration
in Railway Services.
The Chairman
Railway Board
New Delhi
28th April 2014
Sir,
This is to inform you that as a frequent rail traveler, I feel that there are certain issues and problems one might
encounter while travelling by train which must be brought into your notice. Several problems arose, while I was on a
trip from Chandigarh to New Delhi.
Firstly, the train was extremely dirty. It felt like that floor has been cleaned a long ago. The creepy toilets further
added to the poor hygiene condition of the train. Also, the windows were streaked with handprints. Another
deficiency in service was the poor quality of food and beverages provided by the railway. The food was not fresh and
as per the standard quality. Yet another concern is that railway employees were rude to the passengers. Even at
asking for the time, they were yelling around. Finally, the delays we encountered were caused by poor planning. The
train was late by an hour without any reason, due to which many of the Co-passengers also missed their important
appointments. Moreover, some conceited people were travelling without tickets and there was nobody to keep a
check on their activities.
The service quality of railway is deteriorating day by day. I hope you will take steps to address these issues with your
trains.
Yours sincerely,

Descriptive Topics-Write an Essay on Problems facing our Country.

India is one of the worlds fastest growing economies. But the dark side is, India is still facing many economic, social
and cultural problems like population explosion, poverty, unemployment, illiteracy, corruption, crime, price level,
religious violence, drug abuse, child labor, child marriage, terrorism etc.
India suffers from the problems of overpopulation. It is a kind of explosion no less horrible than the explosion of an
atom bomb. India ranks 2nd after China in the matter of population with 1.27 billion people. Major reasons for
overpopulation are increased life span, illiteracy, better medical facilities, early marriages and no family planning.
India is also caught up in the vicious circle of poverty. Even though per capita income has increased but uneven
distribution of wealth has led to the situation of irony where rich people are getting richer while poor are getting
poorer. Poverty imposes an oppressive weight on India, especially in rural areas where almost three out of four
Indians are poor.
Other critical economic issues are unemployment and illiteracy. Economic slowdown and over capacity in educational
institutions have led to increasing rate of unemployment. In India, every one person out of three graduate persons
found to be unemployed. Though Indias literacy rate has touched 74% but still there are some highly populated
states which have very low literacy rate. Moreover, gender discrimination has resulted into a lower literacy rate
among women.
Corruption is yet another major problem, which is widespread in India. Each and every office whether it comes under
central or state administration is no exception. In the recent past, corruption has double-folded with number of
scams being exposed like 2G Scam, 3G Scam, Commonwealth Games Scam, Coal Allocation Scam and many more.
Corruption is further reinforced due to poverty and inequality.
Further there are some social problems also i.e. child labor, child marriage, religious violence, female foeticide, drug
addiction among youth, mercy killing and honor killing. These social problems are more prevalent in rural areas due
to illiteracy, poverty and caste discrimination.
Another dreadful issue that India is facing is terrorism. Terrorists are heartless people who kill unarmed, innocent
men, women and children. Terrorism involves not only destruction of economy but also loss of human assets of a
country. One of the major causes of terrorism is unemployed youth which can be easily misled.
All these problems are coming in the way of development of our country and these issues are even causing threat to
our existence. There is an urgent need to solve these issues and make our country better place to live.

Descriptive Topic-Crime Rate in our Country is a cause of concern.

In recent years, crime rate is increasing drastically all around the country. People who have migrated from rural
areas to big cities have underlined innumerable security problems. In this respect there are numerous reasons why
people who migrate to big cities bring about an increase in crime rates in terms of lack of education, change in social
values, unemployment, poverty, etc.
In todays world, education has become an indispensable part of peoples lives. There are multiple connections
between education and crime. Mostly uneducated individuals are generally involved in illegitimate crimes.
The reason behind this is due to the need of well- paid jobs and fulfillment of daily needs and expenses. They also
may be deprived of receiving good education. Ultimately, lack of education constitutes a threat to society in big
cities. The government should encourage education through curriculum and media for the people who live in big
cities. Moral education is also very important.
When it comes to values, it is an undeniable fact that almost all social and cultural structures have changed a lot in
recent years. Technological, political and social developments are responsible for such changes. In big cities,
personal benefits have become more important than cultural and religious values. Consequently, individuals begin to
ignore these values because of their economical interest.
Another reason for increasing crime rates include weak enforcement of laws by the government, corruption in
enforcement agencies, advanced technology which leads to cyber crimes among youngsters and drug addiction also
is the reason for various crimes.
To eradicate such crimes, various measures should be taken by the government. Strict rules and regulations will
decrease the anti-social activities and mafias. Police force should be increased. Hard punishments oblige the criminals
to think about before committing the crime.
Proper practical education, vocational training centers to initiate more industries will help to originate more job
opportunities and reduce unemployment. Apart from this, poor people who are living below poverty line should be
given considerations by various government policies to uplift their lives. Drug addiction among youngsters can be
removed with the help of family supports.
Though crime rates are increasing day by day, we can reduce it by strong rules, enforcement of laws, moral
education and parental guidance, etc.

Descriptive Topics-Problems faced by our Country.

India is fastest developing country in the world. India with its diversified culture, natural resources, technology and
huge skilled human resources, is also fastest growing economy in the world. But at the same time there are several
problems, modern India is facing which are affecting its growth and development. Some are Socio-economic
problems and some other major problems.
The major socio-economic problem being faced by India is Poverty. Even after 66 years of Independence, the
country is still fighting against this social evil.
Nearly, one third of the Indian population is living below poverty line. Many go without a meal a day. The
government is struggling hard to eradicate poverty. The increasing population and mismanagement of government
schemes have increased the growth of poverty. So there is an urgent need to curtail population growth by adopting
strict family planning programmes by government. There is also need to increase rural and urban development by
better management of Government schemes. By strict implementation of these schemes poverty can be reduced to a
great extent.
The second most important socio-economic problem in India is unemployment. About 9.4% of Indian population is
unemployed or under- employed. To reduce this problem, the Government is devising new and effective schemes like
Mahatma Gandhi Rural Employement Guarantee Scheme (MGREGS) and Jawaharlal Nehru Rojgar Yojna (JNRY), it
is possible to reduce the rate of unemployment.
The other major problem faced by our country is lack of quality education. Many children in rural India does not
have any access to good schools and quality education, despite of government efforts on compulsory education and
child labour ban. Poverty eradication and improvement of rural schools should be a priority for the government of
India.
Corruption is the other widespread problem faced by present India. In India corruption takes the form of Bribes,
evasion of taxes, misappropriation of funds, fraudulent conversion of property etc. Apart from this, corruption also
leads to an unethical society. This increases the already existing gap between poor and rich. This social evil needs to
be removed as to bring back moral values in the society.
The above problems being faced by Modern India cannot be solved by just introducing Government policies and
schemes, but these can be definitely reduced by peoples participation and willingness to commit ourselves to social
values, equality and education.

Descriptive Topics- Press should enjoy unlimited freedom without such a freedom it would be quite
impossible for media to bring out the truth. Give two arguments in support of this statement and two
against this.
Arguments in favour of the statement:
Press is the fourth estate of democracy. It is also the guardian of democracy. Only unbiased and impartial press
can bring the real picture of any event or issue. It can spoil the real issue if any outside force influences it. Thus
press should enjoy unlimited freedom.
Press should render the responsibility of an ardent critic. It should be a positive critic of different policies and
programmes initiated by the government. For bearing this noble responsibility it should avoid all scopes of outside
influence. In a democracy important institutions like press should grow independently.
Arguments against the statement:
Unaccounted freedom turns one into a dictator. Turning of an institution into a strong fort of dictatorship is not a
healthy sign for democracy. Under the Psychology of fear an institution tries to be responsible and democratic.
Therefore, the press should be accountable to citizens.
After all, running press is a business. Each business is guided by profit making attitude. To have quick profit many
newspapers, Journals and T.V. channels promote obscenity. Therefore, such programmes must be censored.
Assigning unlimited freedom to such programmes will corrupt public moral and itll be against the very spirit of the
existence of the society.

Descriptive Topics- Some persons feel that planning has become irrelevant today. Give at least two
arguments in favour of this statement and two against this.
Arguments in favour of the statement:
There is a school of thought that associates planning with the rigid socialist economic theory; for people of this
school planning is not relevant in a market oriented economy. State intervention is quite unexpected in a free market
economy.
The planning commission itself seems aware that it must delineate a new role for itself in the changed
circumstances. It is admitted that the failures of planning interventions had been more glaring where the state
participated directly in production.
Arguments against the statement:
A little thought will help us arrive at conclusion that planning is still relevant, though with certain modifications. The
very tasks of long term structural adjustment are very much the same as the objectives set by Indian planning,
namely, rapid, balanced and sustained growth, besides social justice. State intervention is still necessary, may be to a
lesser extent than before, and in other directions.
Planning is needed even in a free market economy. Market forces and the price mechanism would take care of
growth and production in general; the planning commission will focus on the developmental aspect.
The free-market economy is always operated by the people whose sole purpose is money-making. One third of
Indias population is below poverty line. Therefore, it is the noble duty of the government to take care of them.

Descriptive Topics-Does Pay hike can check corruption?
A Person is paid for the services which he/she is rendering to his/ her organization or to our nation. The payment
which he receives in return is a fixed lump sum amount which is known as salary. Salary a person getting is
according to his/her position but corruption is something different. Since the empirical evidence about the relation
between his/her salary and corruption is bureaucracy is ambiguous, the relation between the two. It constructs a
model where at the initial equilibrium both the honest and corrupt bureaucrats coexist and shows that the effects of
a salary hike crucially depend on the preference pattern of the bureaucrats.
Pay hike do not give rise to the corruption. The causes of corruption in India includes excessive regulations,
complicated taxes and licensing system, numerous government departments each with bureaucracy and discretionary
powers, monopoly by government controlled institutions on certain goods and services delivery and lack of
transparent laws and processes. Mostly in government departments the salary or any other increment which they are
getting, they think this is their right or the value of their work done and the money which they get from other
sources such as bribe, is their talent. In a study it has been proved that Indians had first hand experience of paying
bribes to get their work done.
Corruption is not something for which you have to do mastery or get some particular degree like bachelors in
corruption and masters in corruption. Sadly there is a little bit of corruption in almost every individual. Corruption is
part and parcel of modern world. These days persons with not only lower wages are corrupt but the person at higher
post with higher salary is also corrupt. Corruption is at every level.
In developing country like India, rise in salaries of people is 10% every year but the rise in corruption in last few
years is almost double or triple. So hike in salary doesnt check corruption. This is something which an individual can
do by changing his/her opinion about how things will work by adopting right way or wrong way. Decision is all yours

Descriptive Topics- Write an Essay on The Joint Family in India is Fading Away.
A family comprises of grandparents, parents, Uncle, Aunt, Children, cousin is known as joint family. The relations
bind them together and they share their happiness and sorrow together under a single roof. A joint family involves
much more than the people living under the same roof. Those of us who have experienced it will know its worth.
With everyone putting in his or her part , this benefit everyone. Not only children get to live and grow with their
grandparents and cousins, they also learn the value of relationship. They learn to give and take, to be patient,
cooperative tolerant and to adjust with other family members.
In a nuclear family, a working mother tries her best to strike a balance between services and house hold chores. At
the same time she tries to be a good mother and a good wife. But in joint family she will easily get helped by the
other members of the family. The joint family has a number of advantages. However, it doesnt always work.
When many people of different mentality and deposition live under one common roof, negative human traits are
bound to crop up. Members than have their tendency to stress on their rights and ignore their duties. When this kind
of attitude prevails, the atmosphere is not conducive to peace and harmony which leads to the deteoration of joint
families to the nuclear families.
Nuclear family is a family which consists of parent and their biological children (siblings). Like every other thing
nuclear family as well have its advantages and disadvantages. Advantages such as small furnished house consist of
two to three rooms, rather than more rooms like in joint family. In this family they dont have to share their things
like toys, books, sweets, and room with any one. They have their everything separate.
Both working parents are earning for their one or two children only. With these so many advantages, the things
which they have missed are advices of elders, small cute fighting of cousins and the most important thing is sharing
and children of nuclear family dont even know how to share. They just want everything of their own.
People of these days are just running behind money. They want to earn more and more, by sacrificing their
important relations, and the worst part is they dont realize what they had lost.

Descriptive Topics- A barking dog seldom bites explain the meaning of the proverb with suitable
examples from your personal experience.
The above adage is self explanatory. It is in the nature of dogs to bark. There are dogs which bark too much, too
loudly. There are some dogs which simply whine. And there are few dogs which rarely bark. It is the last kind of dogs
which should be feared and not the first kind referred to above.
A non- barking dog is livelier to turn ferocious and consequently even bites. On the contrary, the dogs are referred to
in the given proverb is not likely to bite. This is the matter of every matter of every day observation and experience.
Well! Dog in the proverb is merely symbolic of a truth that extends to even the realm of human beings. I learnt this
lesson quite early, in class seventh. My classmate jai prakash was a stout looking; vociferous fellow who would brow
beat the poor, innocent looking boys of the class. For no reason, he would shout at them. He reveled in intimidating
others. No one dared to oppose him being quite aware of this rogue behavior.
One day he appeared out of blue and pushed me by the neck while i was walking. My temper ran high at this
behavior and without a thought of consequence i whacked him. The bully was taken aback. He ran. I chased. Others
watched in delight and shouted in chorus, encouraging me to go on. That day i also realized the import of the
proverb.
Since then i have stopped taking too seriously, people who bark too much. I came across nagging clerks, shouting
baboos and quarrelsome ladies, as everyone does not too infrequently. And every time I find my way through,
thanks to a clearer understanding of the above mentioned proverb.

Descriptive Topic- India houses the second largest number of people, only after China. But Indias
performance in games and sports has not been up to the mark. Suggest any three measures for the
progress of games and sports in India.
Despite its vast human resources India has not been able to perform well in games and sports. This is primarily
because of we do not give so much importance to games and sports as we give value to other aspects of human
activities. Swami Vivekananda once emphasized that one should play football first and then go through the Gita.
Because strong body supports a strong mind. So there is the need of change in this peculiar Indian mindset.
Government should give due importance to games and sports as it gives to other departments. The government
should play the role of a mother instead of a cool guardian. Active government support will infuse a sense of sport-
love in common people.
Each colony or village should have its sports-club. Sport-clubs should be given much importance. The village or town
community should take part in the decision making of sports clubs. The process will bring an age of democracy in
sports-world. Through such a major, there is step of finding out sport-genius.
Nearly 70% of Indias population dwells in villages. In Indian villages there is no proper infrastructure for the
development of games and sports. There is no proper play-ground in villages. In absence of play-ground, the
community games cannot be played. This is the main reason behind lacking team spirit among Indians. Therefore,
first of all, operation-play ground should be initiated in India. This should not be a village centered operation. But
this should have an all India character.
The development in games and sports is not in isolated phenomenon. It is the part of an overall development. We
should have an integral approach for the development. If the economy of a country grows, the interest of people in
games grows.
We should assign equal importance to many games, not be cricket or badminton centered only. All these approaches
and programmes can be assimilated into a single one as integrated sports development programmes.

Descriptive Topic-Moral Values: Its need in the present day Society.

The only values held by society are pleasure and instant gratification. Moral values are something which is hereditary
or a child inherits from our elders , such as parents and other members of the family. These are the values which are
present in a person itself ,thing he/she can do is improve them or polish them as the requirement or need of the time
or situation.
People in modern society are losing their moral values. There are three reasons to support this statement. These
reasons are the materialism could negatively affect peoples moral values, public manners could influence peoples
moral values and the internet could also influence moral values.
These days we can see that a decline in traditional family values; marriage between a man and a woman; sense of
responsibility regarding in making it on your own; belief in your God; pride in your country and your workmanship.
An alarming increase in out-of-wedlock, births, particularly in the black community.
A decline of respect for public school teachers and people in position of authority is eroding our great nation. our
society has been on a downward spiral when it comes to values. You can see this in all the shootings that happen
everywhere, as well as places where one used to feel safe, like school campus, that are now danger zones. Also all
the issues with unlawful posting of erotic pictures and not to mention child pornography. Technology has played a
big role in promoting this, but the fact that people has no value make it worse.
People no longer care that how their interactions with others effect the outside world. Today everything is about
instant pleasure and gratification. One can do whatever one want to do to anyone, but they done not do it back to
me. One can close the door in someones face, push them aside in annoyance or publicity humiliate them. Anything

Descriptive Topic-If the polar ice melt, what will be the consequences?

1. Polar region is a complete eco-system with flora, fauna and natural landscape in all its brilliance, which is
inextricably linked with the biotic system of the world. Melting of polar ice will mean collapse of the polar ice-system
and consequently it will also have a deleterious impact on the bio system of the world.
2. Perhaps the gravest consequence of the melting of ice will be the sudden rise in the sea level. In fact scientists
have been warning from time to time that the rise in the mean temperature of the world, which is being witnessed
over the decades, will in due course result in the melting of the polar ice which will raise the mean sea level so high
that a major part of the world will be flooded. It is not difficult to imagine the consequences of this flooding- a large
scale death, destruction and devastation so as to endanger the very existence of human beings.
3. Perhaps the only positive consequence of the melting of polar ice cap could be the tiding over the storage of clean
drinking water which is today one of the gravest problems being faced in the world.
4. A majority of the people in the developing world remains devoid of clean drinking water. They have to depend
either on the meager rainfall or on contaminated water resulting in severe health hazards. Melting of polar ice mean
an instant solution to this problem, provided of course mankind is able to successfully channelize the gigantic surge
of water.

Descriptive Topic-Women Entrepreneurs in India
Modern times have witnessed an array of changes in our society. Among them the most significant is woman
liberation and empowerment. Gone are the days when women were considered no match for all powerful men in the
world. The new generation women across the world have proved themselves in all spheres of life.
India has also been part of these radical changes as the number of women entrepreneurs and businesswomen are
increasing. Women entrepreneurs face a series of problems right from the beginning like traditions, customs, socio
cultural values, ethics, motherhood, subordinates to husband and other problems like feeling of insecurity, risk
averseness etc. In spite of these problems, women in Indian society are climbing the ladder of success and making
their mark in the corporate world.
Some well known entrepreneurs in India are Indira Nooyi (CFO, Pepsico), Kiran Mazumdar Shaw (MD, Biocon Ltd.),
Ekta Kapoor (TV Serial and Film Producer), Farah Khan (Director and Choreographer), Chanda Kochar (MD & CEO,
ICICI Bank), Indu Jain (Chairperson, Times Group), Simone Tata (Chairperson, Lakme), Sulajja Firodia Motwani
(JMD, Kinetic Motors) and Shahnaz Hussain (CEO, Shahnaz Herbals). These are just few of the pertinent and
triumphant women entrepreneurs of India.
The emergence of women entrepreneurs and their contribution to national economy is quite visible in India. They
create new jobs for themselves and others and also provide society with different solutions to management.
However, they still represent a minority of all entrepreneurs. Thus, we need to harness the latent talent and help
them grow.

Dear Sir,

Sub: Request for installation of ATMs in our office premises and
Maharaja Engineering College, Varanasi premises

***************

Our Branch has been making a lot of progress since 2012 April. The deposits of the
branch as on 31
st
March 2012 was Rs.24 crore and advances was Rs.12 crore. The
deposit position of the branch as on the last week Friday 15th February 2013 is given
below:

Total Deposits Rs. 26 crore (target for March 2013 Rs. 27 crore)
Total advances - Rs. 14.5 crore (target for March 2013 Rs. 14 crore)

Many of our customers have expressed the need for having our bank's ATM in our
office premises since it would facilitate their withdrawing cash any time they need.
Similarly the professors, lecturers and students of Maharaja Engineering College,
Varanasi where our branch extension counter is there, have also requested us to instal
an ATM in their college premises.

We also feel that establishing ATMs in these two places will improve customer service
at our counter since people interested in drawing small amounts need not stand in the
queue in our office and also extension counter. This will enable us to concentrate on
improving our clientele base and further enhance our business position. There are four
ATMs of other banks but our customers desire to use our ATMs for convenience and
sentimental reasons also.

Kindly issue orders for installation of ATMs as requested above.

Yours faithfully,

(S.RAMAKANTH AGARWAL)

Dear Sir,

Sub: Request for extension of business hours by one hour more per day

**************

As you are aware many members of our Export Promotion committee maintain their current
accounts with you for a long time. Our committee has also opened its current account with you in the
first week of April 2012.

The service rendered by your staff members is very good. However we find that your branch
functions from 10.00 am to 2.00 pm and 2.30 to 3.30 pm only. Many of our members collect cash
from their buyers and return to their shops only by 3.30 pm and hence are not able to remit that
day's collection into their bank account immediately. They are forced to retain the collections
overnight in their office posing risk of robbery and allied problems.

Many customers have requested to take up with you so that you bank branch functions for one more
hour every day i.e. 10.00 am to 2.00 pm and 2.30 pm to 4.30 pm. Correspondingly one hour more
service can be extended on saturdays aslo. In case this request is accepted it will not only help your
existing customers. Many of our members who do not have their accounts with you will also be
opening their accounts and your business position will improve considerably.

We are sure that your bank management will consider our request favourably.

Thanking you,

Yours faithfully,

Dear Sir,
Sub: My Education Loan A/c No. SHN/23456/2007-- EMI repayment
****
I availed Education Loan of Rs.6 lakhs in the year 2007 from your branch for study in SMR
University. I completed my B.Tech degree in March 2012. I attended campus recruitment tests
conducted at the University. But I could not get placed since I had lesser percentage of marks than
they insisted upon. After completing the degree I am applying to various software companies for
recruitment and am hopeful of getting employed shortly. In the meantime I have received your letter
dated 1st February 2013 asking me to pay EMI. My father has retired from government service two
years ago and we are living on his monthly pension. My mother is home maker. Under the
circumstances, I am unable to repay the EMI as per schedule. Kindly grant me holiday for further six
months period.

I am hopeful of getting employed in a software company or in a nationalised bank by that time and I
will commence paying my EMI of Rs 9000/ p.m. from May 2013. I am sure you will consider my
request favourably.

Thanking you,

Yours faithfully,

Dear Sir,
Sub: Our Term Loan account -- Request for EMI postponement
*****
We would like to thank your Bank management for having sanctioned us term loan of Rs. 200 lakhs,
using which we were able to decorate our show room and provide AC and other facilities. We
availed the term loan on 16th August 2012 and started the work in right earnest. However on
account of delay in execution of work at different levels the full decoration of the shop could not be
completed. In spite of that we commenced our sales show room on 15th January 2013 and are
receiving good number of enquiries.
As you are aware there is a lot of competition faced by us from other leading companies like Vivek
& Co, Vasanth & Co, Shah & co etc. and we are employing MBA graduates as Sales Marketing
personnel to push up our sales. Our team is visiting different business establishments, offices and is
canvassing for more sales of television, home theatres, music systems etc. We are hopeful of
improved sales in the next few months -- say by July 2013.
We were given a holiday of 6 months for payment of EMI (Equated Monthly Instalments) of Rs.5
lakhs. Our first EMI will have to be paid by 16th Febryary 2013. Since the complete decoration work
could not be completed on time and sales having not picked up well as per our estimates, we are
unable to pay our EMI from February 2013 . We request you to give us a further holiday of six
months and we shall commence remitting our EMI starting from August 2013. We have been paying
the interest on loan debited in our account regularly by debit to our cash credit account.
In view of the reasons explained above, we are sure you will consider our request for postponement
for payment of EMI to August 2013.
Thanking you,
Yours faithfully

Subject Problem of Open Manholes in Laxmi Nagar

Sir,
With due regards, I wish to bring to your kind notice that the conditions of man holes in our area are very
unsatisfactory.
Recently, a six year old child had a providential escape when he fell into an open manhole in our area. Luckily a
passerby rescued him. The frightening fact is that open manholes have become the source of imminent danger to the
lives of the residents of this area, especially small children. These manholes with their gaping mouths can be death-
traps for unsuspecting passerby. They can also cause major motor accidents.
I would request you to instruct the concerned staff to take immediate necessary action to get these open manholes
covered before they claim any life.

Yours faithfully
