TIME MANAGEMENT AND BEING
ABLE TO PRIORITISE
INTRODUCTION
Through most of high school, I had found that for me specifically, it was very difficult to
manage my time in correspondence with school work and being able to decide what is
more important for me to do. Leading from the end of high school, into University, I
realised that this had become a growing concern of mine, especially since there is a lot
more to take in at university and the work and assignments you do are far more
important. This idea of an app that works with the information that is recorded in Cecil
will help students with such problems like mine by arranging the data in order to give
the user a reminder/notification.
3. BUSINESS SECTION
3. 1 Vision
To help students excel in their studies and be able to create better managed people.
3. 2 Industry Analysis: Application/Apps
Industry: Application Industry
Force: High/Lo
w:
Justification:
Buyer power: High Buyer power for applications is very high
considering that there is are new apps coming
out every day. As of December 2013, the App
Store for iTunes had over 1 Million apps and
says that on average there is 25000 apps added
every month. So they can find an assortment of
apps.
(Chuck Jones, 2013)

Supplier power: Low Supplier power would be rather low, seeing as
the creator of apps just need to be able to find a
coding software to create the app. Other than
collaborating with Apple or the Play Store to
allow them to get their app into their store, the
supplying power would be low
Threat of new
entrants:
High The threat of new entrants into the industry of
app creation would be rather high. The reason
for this is because there are apps being created
all the time by people with innovative ideas.
Threat of substitutes: High Since there are a lot of apps out there,
customers are able to find an app that is
tailored to them more than others. Customers

would easily be able to find a substitute app.
Rivalry among
existing competitors:
High The rivalry among existing competitors is high
because app are so easily available. The only
way app creators can get advantages over
others I by being innovative which can be very
difficult.
Overall attractiveness of the industry: It is a very unattractive industry if you main
goal is to make a profit. The reason for this is that it is very easy for people to create
apps. Even if there is a new and innovative idea, people will copy the idea of that app
and make it their own. Though apps are used everywhere for everything, all the time,
and the industry has a $25 Billion revenue (as of 2013), as a lone creator it is a very
unattractive industry for someone, or a company to because of how unsecure the
industry is and how quickly it moves. (Scott Austin, 2013)
3. 3 Customers and Their Needs
The main customer for this timetable/prioritising app is for University students, or
more specifically, University of Auckland students. Their need is to be able to manage
their studying and assignments without having to do it themselves. It will also be
another way to prevent procrastination amongst students and help timetable what they
should be doing with their time for studying. Students tend to procrastinate and find it
difficult to try to manage their studies. Outside of University, students can find it difficult
to structure their time, especially when it comes to the work load from university
(Brandon Gaille, 2013)
3. 4 The Product and Service
The app will be integrated with the University of Auckland's student system Cecil
through the students UPI/Username and password, to gather the students assignments
information such as the weight of the grade, start date and due date, and prioritise them
by when something is due and how much the grade is. Then it will send a reminder to
the user about how much time should be spent on the assignment and will remind the
user that they should be doing that assignment. When it comes near to exams or
upcoming tests, it will gather information from announcements that talk about what
students should study for that exam or test and set out an automated study timetable for
the user. But the app is all up to the user and there will be several functions such as do
not disturb (during specific times) and being able to say that you have finished with the
task that the app has reminded you of.
3. 5 Suppliers and Partners

The main partner that the app will be collaborating with is the University of Auckland.
The main reason is because the app will need to be able to login to Cecil using students
UPI/Username and password which only the University can allow. Also for security
purposes because the app itself is a type of 3
rd
party to the University's system. Another
partner would be the App Store and the Play Store because your app will have to be
accepted by them in order for it to be distributed. (Apple Inc, 2014)
3. 6 Strategy: Cost Focus
On Porter's Generic Strategies, this app would come under Cost Focus. The reason for
this is that preferably the app would be free to all University of Auckland students, even
though a free app would still be able to generate revenue through advertising etc.
(Natasha Starkell, 2014) The competitive scope of it would be rather narrow because it
is specifically for UoA Students.
3. 7 Value Chain Activity: Delivering the Product/Service
Delivering the service to the user would be the most important value chain activity
seeing as the basis of the app is to receive information. The whole focus of the app is to
help manage the user's study and by being punctual with the app and being able to
deliver the service, they will be able to do so.

3. 8 Business Processes

Information Delivery Process: Getting the information to the user would be the most
important process and delivering the individual information to each user.

Information Gathering Process The way the information is gathered and made into
a notification is a process within the information delivery process which is very
important to how the user gets their notification.

retrieved from Cecil and manage it into information that will be ready to be sent.
3. 10. 2. INFORMATION PROCESSING SYSTEM This system will be part of what
sorts the collected information and turning it into a notification and sending that
information in order of importance and at different times.
3. 10. 3. NOTIFICATION DELIVERY SYSTEM This system help know if the user has
received the correct information and if the user has checked the notification or they will

CONCLUSION
Though the actual industry of apps isn't a very attractive one, and that generating
revenue soley from the app alone may be difficult, the app was mainly intended to help
students as opposed to make money from. By using information technologies to help
sort through information in Cecil and distribute it for each individual person that uses
the app, they will be able to better manage their workload and study whilst at university.
