PART 1 GENERAL

1.1 RELATED SECTIONS:

1.2 SCOPE OF SECTION:

This section contains the requirements for valves and pipe fittings.

PART 2 VALVES

2.1 WATER SYSTEMS (HOT/COLD DOMESTIC WATER, CHILLED WATER,
CONDENSER WATER, ETC.):

Use full port ball valves with threaded/flanged ends for isolation/shutoff. Provide
stem extensions, as necessary, to accommodate piping insulation. Operating
pressure shall not exceed 80% of the valve pressure class. Provide manual gear
operators for valves 6 and larger. See table and accompanying descriptions below
for specifics.

2.2 STEAM/CONDENSATE SYSTEMS:

When the operating pressure is 80 psi and above, the system shall be considered
high pressure. Where operating pressures is between 15 79 psi, the system shall
be considered medium pressure. When the operating pressure is below 15 psi, the
system shall be considered low pressure. In order to improve standardization and
quality, steam/condensate system valves, operating in the medium and low pressure
class, shall utilize the same type of valves per the following size/application schedule:

2.3 VALVE TYPES:

A. VALVE TYPE A1:

Isolation/service valves used for steam/condensate service in 2 pipe
sizes, shall be screwed end, gate type. For steam/condensate service 80 psi
& above, valve shall be all bronze, 300# heavy duty or industrial service rated,
with solid wedge disc, non-rising stem and stainless steel seat. Threaded pipe
and fittings shall be coated with Teflon impregnated never-seize, on male
threads only, prior to assembly.

B. VALVE TYPE A2:

Isolation/service valves used for steam/condensate service in 2 pipe
sizes, shall be screwed end, gate type. For steam/condensate service below
80 psi, valve shall be all bronze, 150# heavy duty or industrial service rated,
with solid wedge disc and non-rising stem. Threaded pipe and fittings shall be
coated with Teflon impregnated never-seize, on male threads only, prior to
assembly.

C. VALVE TYPE B1:

Isolation/service valves for steam/condensate service in 2- 12 pipe sizes,
shall be flanged end, gate type. For steam/condensate service 80 psi &
above, valve shall be 300# cast steel, carbon steel or forged steel (heavy duty
or industrial service rated), with rising or non-rising stem. Flange gaskets shall
be metallic type suitable for raised face or flat face flanges as applicable,
equal to Flexitallic brand. Bolts or studs, of Grade 5 or better, are to be full
sized per valve manufacturer to fully fit the flange hole. Threads shall be
coated with Teflon impregnated never-seize, and installed bolt shall have a
maximum of 2-4 threads showing when valve flanges are pulled down to
recommended torque.

D. VALVE TYPE B2:

Isolation/service valves for steam/condensate service in 2- 12 pipe sizes,
shall be flanged end, gate type. For steam/condensate service below 80 psi,
valve shall be 150# cast steel, carbon steel or forged steel (heavy duty or
industrial service rated), with rising or non-rising stem. Flange gaskets shall
be metallic type suitable for raised face or flat face flanges as applicable,
equal to Flexitallic brand. Bolts or studs, of Grade 5 or better, are to be full
sized per valve manufacturer to fully fit the flange hole. Threads shall be
coated with Teflon impregnated never-seize, and installed bolt shall have a
maximum of 2-4 threads showing when valve flanges are pulled down to

E. VALVE TYPE C1:

G. VALVE TYPE D1:

Isolation/service valves used throughout domestic water system shall be full
port ball type. For valves - 3 operating 125 psi & above, use 300# class,
stainless steel, ball valves with threaded ends. Provide stem extensions, as
necessary, to accommodate piping insulation.

H. VALVE TYPE D2:

Isolation/service valves used throughout domestic water system shall be full
port ball type. For valves - 3 operating below 125 psi, use 600 WOG
150 SWP class, forged brass, ball valves with threaded ends. Provide stem
extensions, as necessary, to accommodate piping insulation.

I. VALVE TYPE E1:

Isolation/service valves used throughout domestic water system shall be full
port ball type. For valves 4 and larger, operating 125 psi & above, use 300#
class, stainless steel, flanged ball valves suitable for potable water service.

J. VALVE TYPE E2:

Isolation/service valves used throughout domestic water system shall be full
port ball type. For valves 4 and larger, operating below 125 psi, 125# class,
epoxy coated cast iron or 150# class, stainless steel, flanged ball valves
suitable for potable water service.

K. VALVE TYPE F1:

Isolation/service valves used chilled water (12 & up) and condenser water (4
& up) shall be 200#, industrial duty butterfly valve, cast/ductile iron, lug type
body, with 316 stainless steel disc, and EPDM sleeve/seal/seat materials.
Provide manual gear operator for valves 6 and above.

PART 3 PIPE FITTINGS

3.1 GENERAL:

A. All piping systems must be cleaned, tested, and accepted by Facilities
Services prior to being placed in service.

B. Refer to individual piping system specifications Sections for pipe and fitting
material and joining methods.

3.2 PIPING SPECIALTIES:

A. Dielectric unions are to be used at all junctions of dissimilar piping. Provide
isolation valves upstream of dielectric union.

B. Pipe Escutcheons: Chrome plated, stamped steel, hinged, split-ring escutcheon,
with set screw or snap-on type. Inside diameter shall closely fit pipe outside
diameter or outside of pipe insulation where pipe is insulated. Outside diameter
shall completely cover the opening in floors, walls, or ceilings. In exterior, damp,
or corrosive environments, use stainless steel escutcheons.

C. Dielectric Waterway Fittings: Electroplated steel or brass nipple, with an inert
and non-corrosive, thermoplastic lining.

D. Dielectric Unions: Provide dielectric unions with appropriate end connections for
the pipe materials in which installed (screwed, soldered, or flanged), which
effectively isolates dissimilar metals, prevents galvanic action, and stops
corrosion.

E. Unions: Malleable iron, class 150 for low pressure service and class 250 for high
pressure service; hexagonal stock, with ball and socket joints, metal to metal
bronze seating surfaces; female threaded ends.

F. Strainers: Provide strainers full line size of connecting piping, with ends matching
piping system materials. Screens shall be type 304 stainless steel, with 3/64
perforations at 233 per square inch.

1. Provide strainers with 125 psi working pressure rating for low pressure
applications.

2. Threaded ends, 2 and smaller: cast-iron body, screwed screen retainer
with center blowdown fitted with pipe plug.

3. Flanged ends, 2 and larger: cast-iron body, bolted screen retainer with
off center blowdown fitted with pipe plug.

G. Mechanical Sleeve Seals: Modular mechanical type, consisting of interlocking
synthetic rubber links shaped to continuously fill annular space between pipe and
sleeve, connected with bolts and pressure plates which cause rubber sealing
elements to expand when tightened.

H. Steel Sleeves: Schedule 40 galvanized, welded steel pipe, ASTM A53, grade A.
Sleeves shall be cast in the slab for new construction, or core drilled and set in
epoxy grout for retrofits. Sleeves in floors shall extend 6 above the floor.

PART 4 - PIPING

4.1 CHILLED WATER SYSTEMS:

CHW piping shall be pre-insulated piping consisting of a HDPE carrier pipe (rated for
150# operating pressure) followed by 2 thick polyurethane foam insulation with a
standard HDPE jacket. Distribution piping larger than 10 I.D. shall be non-insulated
HDPE rated for 150# operating pressure. In the manholes, the piping shall be
schedule 40 black steel, field fabricated/welded followed by 2 closed cellular glass
insulation with kraft paper all service jacket with vapor barrier followed by 2 layers of
15# building felt paper, with joints overlapping a minimum of 3. Paper layers shall
be held in place with 16 gauge copper wire, 8 on center, followed by a 0.020 thick
aluminum, or 0.016 thick stainless steel jacket strapped with 0.75 bands 18 on
center.

4.2 STEAM AND CONDENSATE SPECIALITIES:

Materials: Steel pipe shall be ASTM A106, schedule 80, seamless, black steel with
beveled ends. Pipe shall be domestically produced and a mill certification shall be
provided.
4.3 GAS DISTRIBUTION SYSTEMS:

Underground gas piping will be high molecular weight polyethelene approved for
underground natural gas service with thermal joints. Above ground piping shall be
steel or copper.

HYDRONIC PIPING
PART 1: GENERAL
1.01 Quality Assurance:
A Installer's qualifications: To be considered for this work, firms must have at least
3 years of successful installation experience on projects with hydronic piping
work similar to that required for project. In addition, all welders performing
installation of piping described in this Standard must be Certified Welders, and
each weld must be stamped with the stamp of the welder performing the work.

B. This design guidelines contained herein includes the requirements for systems,
materials, fittings and valves utilized for hydronic piping systems at The
University of Texas at Austin. It is the intention of this document to provide a
standard for piping systems at The University to provide the highest level of
quality and standardization possible; it is not intended to be a guide specification.

C. Testing of the quality of the welds (xray or other testing method) may be required,
and if so, shall be at the discretion and expense of the Owner.
1.02 Chilled Water System Design
A. Use full reverse-return routing on all chilled water coil piping.

B. Control chilled water flow through units with 2-way valves.

C. Chilled water design supply water temperature should be 42F, with a minimum
return water temperature of 58F to maximize the usable lifetime (optimize pipe
size of existing piping) of water systems. This shall be accomplished without the
use of blending stations.
D. Modulate chilled water pumps with variable frequency drives.
E. Codes and Standards:
1. ASME Compliance: Fabricate and install hydronic piping in accordance with
ASME B31.9 "Building Services Piping".
PART 2: PRODUCTS
2.01 Basic Identification:
A. Hydronic Piping: Mark all piping with plastic pipe markers. (equal to "W.H.
Brady B-915 Brady snap-on" snap-on identification markers). Color and letter
coding Standard is ANSI A13.1, Scheme for Identification of Piping Systems.
2.02 Basic Pipe and Pipe Fittings:
A. Hydronic Piping:
B. Pipe Size 1/2" (connections to fan coil units): Type "L" copper w/ wrought
copper fittings.

C. Pipe Size 2" and Smaller: Black steel pipe; Schedule 40; Class 125 cast-iron
fittings with threaded joints.
D. Pipe Size 2-1/2" and Larger: Black steel pipe; Schedule 40; wrought-steel
buttwelding fittings with welded joints.
E. Pipe Size 2-1/2" and Larger: Black steel pipe with grooved joints; Schedule 40;
Mechanical/grooved fittings and couplings. (Can be used at contractors option).
F. Avoid use of 2-1/2, 3-1/2 and 5 inch pipe.
G. Drains and vents on chilled water distribution piping shall consist of Schedule 80
thread-o-lets, stainless steel pipe nipples and bronze gate valves.
H. Section valves and shut off valves on chilled water distrubution:
1. 2 and smaller: Gate Valves
2. 2 1/2 and Larger: Gate Valves or Butterfly Valves.
PART 3: EXECUTION
3.01 Installation of Hydronic Piping:
A. Install piping level with no pitch, and plumb and square whenever possible.
B. Locate groups of pipes parallel to each other, spaced to permit applying full
insulation and servicing of valves.
3.02 Installation of Valves:
A. Sectional Valves: Required on each branch and riser, close to main, where branch
or riser serves 2 or more hydronic terminals or equipment connections, and
elsewhere as indicated on the drawings.
B. Drain Valves: Required on each mechanical equipment item located to completely
drain equipment for service or repair. Install at base of each riser, at base of each
rise or drop in piping system, and elsewhere where indicated or required to
completely drain hydronic piping system.
C. Check Valves: Required on discharge side of each pump, and elsewhere as
indicated.
3.03 Standard Equipment Connections:
A. General: Valve and union is required on supply and return, drain valve on drain
connection.
B. Hydronic Terminals: Install hydronic terminals with hydronic terminal outlet
valve and union on outlet; union, shutoff valve on inlet. Install manual air vent
valve on element in accordance with manufacturer's instruction. Where indicated,
install automatic temperature control valve with unions between shut-off valve and
element on supply line.

HYDRONIC PIPING AND SPECIALTIES
PART 1 GENERAL
1.1 SUMMARY
A. Section Includes: This section describes specific requirements, products and methods of
execution for liquid heat transfer systems of throughout the project.
PART 2 PRODUCTS
1.2 PIPE AND FITTINGS
A. Heating Water Systems (above ground):
1. Copper Pipe:
a. Type L copper hard temper, except where Type K or M, or soft temper is
specified or indicated.
b. Fittings: Wrought copper, solder joint.
c. Extracted branch joints (T-Drill) may be approved when Contractor can demonstrate
satisfactory experience with this method. All joints shall be brazed in accordance
with the Copper Development Association Copper Tube Handbook using B-Cup
series filler metal.
d. Fit joints using 430 silver solder, 95-5 tin-antimony or other approved lead-free solder.
Solder type must be compatible with pipe and fittings. Solder containing lead shall
not be allowed on the job site.
e. Soldering flux: Water flushable, low corrosivity type meeting the requirements of
ASTM B813. Flux shall have label indicating it meets these requirements.
2. Steel Pipe:
a. Welded: Schedule 40 black with butt weld fittings of type and wall thickness to suit
pipe. Weld-O-Lets and Thread-O-Lets may be used on pipe two inch and larger
where branch is minimum of two pipe sizes smaller than main. Pipes 12 inches and
larger may be Schedule 30.
b. No threaded pipe allowed.
c. Mechanical joint type pipe systems are not permitted.
B. Glycol heating systems:
1. Same as heating system.
C. Heating Water Systems (below ground):
1. Continuous runs of Type K soft copper.

D. Chilled water piping system:
1. Same as heating system.
2. Grooved Piping system
a. Schedule 40 pipe or type L hard drawn copper.
b. Coupling housings constructed with ductile iron. Suitable for rolled or cut grooves.
c. Ductile iron fittings.
d. Gasket suitable and approved for service. Molded synthetic rubber designed with a
wide annular interior recess open to fluid pressure such that fluid pressure presses
the gasket to both the pipe and the coupling.
e. Furnish a new roll grooving tool the Department capable of direct roll grooves for 2
inch to 6-inch tubes. Tool may be operated with a standard 3/8-inch socket drive.

f. Victaulic or equal.
E. Cooling Tower Supply and Return Piping:
1. Same as chilled water piping system.
F. Equipment drains and overflows:
1. Type L copper pipe, wrought copper fittings.
1.3 VALVES
A. Select valves of the best quality and type suited for the specific service and piping system
used. Minimum working pressure rating 125 psig saturated steam or 200 psig W.O.G.
Packing material or seals shall not contain asbestos.
B. Provide ball valves for shut-off service, 2" and smaller. Larger may be butterfly valves.
1.4 AUTOMATIC FLOW LIMITING VALVES
A. Provide flow limiting valves at all hydronic terminal devices to limit flow to the design values.
Provide valves with integral isolation valve, strainer, and pressure test ports.
B. Provide valve with maximum flow set to design flow of the heat transfer device being served at
2-psig differential pressure.
PART 3 EXECUTION
1.5 INSTALLATION
A. Route all pipes and ducts parallel with building lines, and as high as possible, except where
underground, or shown otherwise on the drawings.
B. Route piping and ducts to clear all doors, windows, and other openings and to avoid all other
pipes and ducts, light fixtures, and similar products.
C. Conceal all pipes and ducts where routed through finished areas, unless authorized by ANC or
otherwise indicated on the drawings.

D. Preserve access to all pipes and ducts for future connections and alterations; at the same
time optimize space usage by consolidating the routing of pipes and ducts where possible.
E. Avoid combining piping of different materials such as copper and steel in one system, except
that brass valves and specialties may be used with steel pipe. When use of dissimilar metals
cannot be avoided, provide dielectric isolators.
F. Reduce pipe sizes using reducing tees or reducing fittings. Bushings not permitted except on
tanks and similar equipment.
G. Provide air vents with isolation gate valves at high points and where piping turns down in
direction of flow. Where large air quantities can accumulate, provide enlarged air collection
standpipes. Provide manual air vents at system high points and as indicated.
H. Slope pipelines and provide low point drains for piping and equipment.
I. Provide isolation valves at major piping branches as shown and at all terminal devices. Use
ball valves for isolation service. For pipes 2-1/2 inches and larger butterfly valves may be
used.
J. Install valves with stems vertical wherever possible, and in no case with stems below the
horizontal.
K. Provide automatic flow limiting valves at each point in the fluid system where it is necessary to
preset the maximum flow including heating or cooling coils, heating elements, heat
exchangers and domestic hot water recirculation branches; also provide at system branches
and pump discharge connections where indicated.
L. Install flow-limiting valves and serviceable products for heating terminal units to be operable
and adjustable without removal of the finish cover, unless shown otherwise.
M. Provide pressure and temperature test plugs on both sides of heat transfer elements to
measure the drop across runs of all heat transfer elements.
N. Thermal Expansion
1. Install all piping to allow for normal thermal expansion and contraction.
2. Provide anchors where necessary and as shown.
3. Provide expansion loops, expansion compensators, and alignment guides to suit
conditions and as shown on drawings.
4. Piping shall be guided and restrained as recommended by the manufacturer.
1.6 CONNECTING TO EXISTING SYSTEMS
A. Complete cleaning testing of new system prior to connecting to existing system. Isolate and
drain heating and cooling piping loops as necessary to connect new piping.

1.7 CLEANING
A. Thoroughly clean all internal surfaces of the completed heating system as follows:
1. Flush hydronic piping to remove all black magnetic iron oxide and mill scale from the
system.
2. Flush system piping with synthetic organic dispersant (CH2O Product 6149) to remove all
grease. Circulate solution through system at 150 degrees F. or greater for twelve(12) to
twenty-four (24) hours.
3. Repeat process until the system is clean.
4. Flush system with fresh water as necessary to remove residual cleaning agent.
5. Exercise proper care during flushing and cleaning of systems to insure no damage done
to equipment, valves, fittings, or work of other trades. Restore damaged system
components or work of other trades to new or original condition at no additional cost to
Owner.
