The Wheatley Fellowship
The Fellowship was created by Birmingham City University (BCU) in conjunction with the Trustees of the Wheatley Estate and is the outcome of a generous bequest by the late Richard Wheatley. The Fellowship offers an exciting opportunity for an artist at the commencement of, or at a critical point in their professional career to further develop his or her practice within the world-renowned School of Fine Art, Margaret St. For 2014-2015, the Fellowship is directing its invitation for applications from painters and/or printmakers.

The School of Art, Birmingham Institute of Art and Design, seeks applications from practicing fine artists (this year: painters and/or printmakers) for a Fine Art Fellowship under the terms of the Wheatley Bequest. Applicants should normally have a first degree and/or a post graduate qualification in Fine Art.
The Fellow will be provided with a studio in the School of Art and will have access to all of the Institutes excellent facilities, which includes printmaking, painting, film/video and photography equipment as well as high-end camera/photo-print facilities. The Fellowship lasts for ten months commencing in October 2014 and culminates with an exhibition in 2015. Some opportunity for teaching will be given.
The successful applicant will be expected to become a full and active member of the academic and research community within the Centre for Fine Art Research (CFAR), the School of Fine Art and the Birmingham Institute for Art & Design (BIAD).

disciplinary facilities in print, fashion, architecture and design. It is also home to three major Research Centres including The Centre for Fine Art Research (CFAR), The Centre for Making (s.t.u.f.f.) and the Centre for Design and Creative Industry (CDCI). As a Wheatley Fellow you would have access to all the facilities and Research Centres and would, in the first instance, formally be associated with CFAR.
The School of Art
Situated at Margaret Street and purpose built in 1875 for postgraduate Art practice, this stunning Victorian architectural masterpiece now comprises one of best, world-renowned postgraduate/doctoral research environments in Art alongside one of the strongest undergraduate courses nationally, with approximately 240 BA (Hons) Fine Art students, and approximately 120 BA (Hons) Art and Design students, 100 MA students and over 35 PHD research students.
It maintains a unique, international Arts Based Masters Programme (ABM), described by artist Carole Gray as the best Art MASTERS Programme in Europe. The ABM is the umbrella name for flagship courses including: MA Fine Art, MA Arts & Education, , MA Contemporary Curatorial Practice, MA Queer Studies in Arts and Culture, MA Arts & Project Management, MA History of Art and Design, MA Art & Design, MA Media Art Philosophy Practice the and the MA Arts Practice and Education.
The PhD-Research environment is rated as world-leading. Under the auspices of the Centre for Fine Art Research (CFAR), it embraces fine art, contemporary art & philosophy, discourse and immersive art practices, with inventive intersections of old and new technologies: painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, mixed reality labs, archive and installation, music, sound, acoustics, queer poetics, incorporeality and the wild sciences. Eligibility
The successful applicant is likely to hold an undergraduate and/or postgraduate degree in Fine Art or a related subject at the beginning of their career or at a critical point in the development of their current professional career. This year, the call is directed towards painters and/or printmakers. There are no other restrictions.
Fellows will: Be required to commit the majority of their time to the Fellowship and to work in and from the studios of the School of Art in Margaret Street, Birmingham; Undertake some teaching within the School; Be part of the academic and research community working within Margaret Street and should be willing to give reasonable access to staff and students of the University to his or her work; Be subject to the Code of Conduct for the use of the Grade 1 listed building and Health and Safety Regulations of BCU applicable at the time. The University reserves the right to require the removal of offensive/illegal items.
Duration
Normally, for 10 calendar months commencing in October though there is some flexibility in both duration and commencement. The Fellowship will normally conclude with an exhibition of work produced during the Fellowship.
Value
An award of approximately 9000 will be made. This is paid on a monthly basis at a rate of 900 per month. The award is exempt from taxation and other deductions.
STUDIO Accommodation
The Fellow will be allocated a studio within the Margaret Street building. Additional space will be available during July and August when BA students vacate the building. Access to the general teaching and learning resources normally available for BA, MA and PHD students in Margaret Street will be available, including use of the library and use of the extensive workshops. Additional resources within BIAD will be available by arrangement.
Access to the studio will normally be: Term time: Mon Thurs 08.00 19.30; Fri 08.00 18.00 Vacation time: Mon - Friday 08.00 18.00
Materials
Fellows will normally be responsible for providing their own materials.

Interviews will take place on Tuesday 29 th July 2014.
The application form should be accompanied by visual evidence as powerpoint on a disk or a DVD, with accompanying information such as scale, materials, duration etc, and a written statement of not more than 1000 words.
Selection
The Selection Panel will compromise staff representatives of the School of Art and a member of the Wheatley family or their nominee. Short-listed candidates will be required to make a 15- minute presentation in front of the panel on their work, reasons for application, and development of work on the fellowship.
Criteria
Selection will be based upon the quality of the work, plans for the 10 month fellowship and interview. Good interpersonal skills are essential.
The decisions of the Selection Panel are final and no correspondence will be entered into.
