One of the more antici-
pated events in the city is
only weeks away, accord-
ing to Gilberts Lodge
manager Flip Ulrich.
Were shooting for
sometime in June, Ulrich
said. Thats the time-
frame were looking at
right now. Were not ex-
actly sure of the exact date
right now, but sometime
in June.
The local landmark bar
and grill caught fire in
Oct. 2013, and the dam-
age to the facility was ex-
tensive, Ulrich said,
prompting the renova-
tions to be extensive as
well.
Even though only the
kitchen was destroyed by
the fire itself, she said.
The smoke damage was
so intense that much of
the stuff just could not be
saved. We pretty much
took everything down to
the studs and the cinder
block walls and started
from there.
The theme of the newly
renovated Gilberts Lodge
will stay the same, Ulrich
said.
Of course, were keep-
ing with the lodge theme,
she said. The train is go-
ing to be back, too, but
there are going to be a lot
of features that are really
going to warm the place
up. I think people are go-
ing to be pleasantly sur-
prised. We didnt take
away any of the things
that made Gilberts com-
fortable and, well,
Gilberts. We just made it

Staff Writer June Fest is return-
ing to downtown St.
Clair Shores.
The popular one-
day festival is slated
to get underway at 10
a.m. Saturday, June 7,
and continue through
5 p.m. on the stretch
of Greater Mack be-
tween 9 Mile and
Cavalier Drive.
This is another an-
nual event we look
forward to the first
Saturday in June,
said Mayor Kip Walby.
I invite everyone,
all of the community,
to our, believe it or
not, 20th annual June
Fest celebration,
Gloria Kinne, of the
9-Mack Merchants
Associ at i on and
CirCare owner, said.
June Fest is a family
fun day, a street fair,
when the merchants
open our doors and
invite the public to
come down to see
who we are and all
that we have to offer.
But thats just the be-
ginning.
This years festival
includes clowns, mu-
sic and entertain-
ment, dance perfor-
mances, a craft fair, a
Made-in- Michigan
food bazaar, a petting
zoo, a giant slide, a
trackless train and
more, Kinne said.
Theres a whole
host of activities for
the entire family, she
said. And again,
were holding a June
Fest raffle with a $500
cash prize, and this
year the proceeds will
benefit The Lake
House, which is a lo-
cal St. Clair Shores
organization working
to support all those
touched by cancer.

City Councilman John Caron was one of
many volunteers who came out early
Sunday morning to participate in the
Nautical Coast Clean Up. Here, Caron, and
others, clean up the beach at Blossom
Heath.
We are ready, St. Clair
Shores Memorial Day
Parade Committee
Chairwoman Cheryl
Furdos said to city council
at its May 19 meeting.
Were very excited.
The 62nd annual St.
Clair Shores Memorial
Day Parade hits the
streets at 11 a.m. Sunday,
May 25, on Harper
Avenue between 9 and 11
Mile roads.
Its going to be another
unbelievable event on
Harper again this year,
committee member Dave
Rubello said. It promises
to be a great family event.
Bring the family, bring the
friends. We have some
great features that are go-
ing to happen.
Close to 50 military en-
tries highlight the event,
and along with this,
Rubello said, are special
guest s i ncl udi ng
Normandy/D-Day veter-
ans riding with the
Arsenal of Democracy.
It doesnt get any better
than that, he said. These
folks made a big differ-
ence in the war, World War
II, and we are very lucky
and very proud to have
these guys. We counted
five Normandy/D-Day vet-
erans that live right here in
St. Clair Shores.

are also on the roster for
the 62nd annual St. Clair

We want to thank ev-

involved with this, he
said. Were very lucky
were going to be able to
show what St. Clair
Shores is all about. Were
going to honor the veter-

The roads surrounding
the parade close at 11:30

courage spectators to ar-

I encourage everyone
to come out, Rubello said.
Have a picnic there on
Harper, enjoy yourself,
meet some new friends, all
are welcome.

Its novel and its fun.
And the site of hun-
dreds of rubber ducks
flowing down the
Chapaton Retention
Basin is something to
see.
More than this, howev-
er, the 2nd annual Rubber
Ducky Race for Autism,
which gets underway at
11 a.m., Saturday, May
31, at the Chapaton
Retention Basin, is an im-
portant and serious mat-
ter for Henry Ford Health
Systems Center for
Autism and Development
Disabilities and the
Shorewood Kiwanis, who
put on the event.
Money raised at the
event through corporate
and rubber ducky spon-
sorships goes directly to
HFHS CADD programs
that help children with
Aut i sm Spect rum
Disorders.
The center uses the
funds raised in amazing
and creative ways,
Shorewood Kiwanis
member Karen Biafora
said.
The money the event
raised last year went to
purchase iPads and iP-
ods for therapy, she
said. And the response
to them has been so
good.
Programs developed
for use with these elec-
tronic devices aid the cen-
ters Applied Behavior
Analysis therapy team
with speech and language
therapies and more.
This year, Shorewood
hopes to help even more
by setting the bar high by
doubling the number of
attendees and sponsor-
ships to the event.
For this lofty goal to be
met, the Kiwanis said they
need the help of the com-
munity.
Residents can purchase
individual duckies for $5
each, or six duckies for
$25, or purchase a custom
ducky, one which racers
can decorate themselves,
for $10.
Along with the race,
which is slated to begin at
12:30 p.m., the festival al-
so includes free games,
face painting, music and a
food truck.
Its a real fun day for
the family, Biafora said.
And its raising money to
help kids. Thats what the
Shorewood Kiwanis are
all about.

CITY CALENDAR
After a harsh winter, Realtors, home
buyers and sellers are looking forward to
a fresh start this spring.
One annual event will help sell the val-
ue of St. Clair Shores Sunday, June 1.
The St. Clair Shores Community Open
House is from noon to 5 p.m. and fea-
tures dozens of open houses in the city.
Any Realtors with properties for sale
in St. Clair Shores are welcome to be
part of the day. Past tours have included
as many as 100 houses.
The exact number wont be known un-
til the day of the event.
Eric Goosen, of Real Estate One,
27320 Harper, is one of the organizers
and sponsors of the event.
Participants will see a variety of styles
and sizes of houses, Goosen said.
There is a range of houses and condos
from $60,000 to $1.5 million on the mar-
ket and available for tour.
Goosen said visitors are always
amazed at the amenities the city offers.
The public and private marinas, res-
taurant districts, Nine and Mack, Harper,
Jefferson, the municipal golf course,
good police, good schools and three wa-
terfront parks make St. Clair Shores a
great community, Goosen said.
Another organizer and sponsor, Sal
Agrusa of Keller Williams Realty, said
St. Clair Shores City Hall will be open
that day for those on the tour to pick up
a map of the open houses and learn
more about the community. City hall is
the starting point and is located at
27600 Jefferson Circle, near 11 Mile
Road.
The houses are listed by school dis-
trict, Agrusa said. Its amazing.
Almost every real estate company in the
city is part of the event.
Those with houses for sale by outside
Realtors or for sale by owners may also
be part of the day. For more informa-
tion, contact Goosen at (586) 771-1100
or Agrusa at (586) 541-4000.
There will be a drawing for a free
home inspection, too, Goosen said.

Did you know that May is Skin
Cancer Detection and Preven-
tion month?
According to the Ameri-
can Academy of Dermatology
(AAD), more than 3.5 million
new non-melanoma skin cancers
are diagnosed annually. Tese
include basal cell carcinoma
(BCC) and squamous cell car-
cinoma (SCC), with BCC be-
ing the most common. Current
estimates predict that one in 5
American adults will develop a
skin cancer in their lifetime.
Ultra violet light exposure from
the sun or tanning booths is the
number one preventable risk fac-
tor for developing nonmelanoma
skin cancers. People with fairer
skin and lighter hair are more
likely to burn and are therefore
are at a greater risk. However
nonmelanoma skin cancer can
occur in people of any race.
If diagnosed and treated early,
BCC and SCC are easily cur-
able and rarely fatal. Of the 3.5
million cases of nonmelanoma
skin cancer, approximately 3,270
will be fatal (less than one tenth
of a percent).
Te AAD recommends you do
monthly skin self-examination
to fnd new, changing or suspi-
cious lesions. Tis process in-
volves looking over the entire
body including the back, scalp,
soles of the feet, and between
the toes and palms of the hands.
Tis is done most easily using
a full length mirror and a hand
held mirror.
If you have moles or lesions
that have changes in size, color
or texture or a mole that has
recently developed, you should
take the time to have your skin
checked by a Dermatologist.
To learn more about skin can-
cer, skin screenings or for in-
structions on how to complete
your own monthly examina-
tions, call your dermatologist or
contact us at Eastside Dermatol-
ogy, Dr. Lisa Manz-Dulac

In order to do that,
they had to beat Adrian

ing zero and pitching
five innings.
Taylor LaPorte was
2-for-3 with three runs
scored and Wauters was
2-for-3 with two RBIs

Lake Shore was down
5-0 in the bottom of the
seventh inning before
erupting for six runs to
stun Jenison and make
the next round.
I am so proud of the
way the girls battled
back t o wi n,
Puvalowski said.
Miller had the game-
winning walk-off two-
run double. It was her
only hit of the game and
Nemitz was 3-for-4.
Lake Shore had
league doubleheaders
scheduled for earlier in
the week, but rain post-

The Lakeview girls
tennis team ended its sea-
son with a fourth-place
finish in last weekends
Division 2 regional tour-
nament at Lake Front
Park in Grosse Pointe
Woods.
The top two teams au-
tomatically qualified for
the state finals and host
Grosse Pointe North and
Port Huron earned those
spots, gaining 31 and 16
points, respectively.
A third team could
qualify if it earned 18
more points, but the
Huskies finished with 13
points to take fourth.
Warren Woods-Tower
was third with 14.
The highlight of the
tournament for the
Huskies was sophomore
Claire Flood, who won the
No. 2 singles flight with a
6-4, 6-1 victory over
Grosse Pointe Norths
Stephanie Loukanova.
The two met a couple
of weeks ago with
Loukanova defeating
Flood on a cold, windy af-
ternoon at Jefferson
Middle School.
I played with confi-
dence after losing to her a
couple of weeks ago,
Flood said. It was better
playing conditions today
and it made a big differ-
ence in how I played. Its
nice to win, but unfortu-
nately were not going to
the state finals.
Flood would have
made the state finals as
an individual if she made
the finals at No. 1 singles.
The Huskies other sin-
gles players were Rachel
Stacheit (No. 1), Keyaria
Walker (No. 3) and Bing
Ru Wang (No. 4).
For Lakeview, it was a
successful regular sea-
son, which resulted in a
third-place finish at 3-2 in
the Macomb Area
Conf erence Gol d
Division.

utomotive technol-
ogy is bursting
with energy. From
robots in space to
self-driving cars, a
myriad of ideas has left no
one bored.
Heres another sample
of the worlds automakers
latest technology offer-
ings, as released recently
to the media:
Ford Technical
Support Center
Ford recently an-
nounced the opening of its
new Ford Technical
Support Center in
Concord, N.C.. The state-
of-the-art facility will add
an array of tools to devel-
op future performance ve-
hicles and help increase
Fords overall success in
motorsports.
The centerpiece of the
building is a full-motion
platform simulator. After
the simulator has been
proven through racing,
Ford will apply that knowl-
edge to further improve
vehicle dynamics on its
high-performance street
vehicles.
Other pieces of test
equipment include a kine-
matics machine, chassis
torsional twist rig, vehicle
center of gravity machine
and coordinate measure-
ment machine.
Space robots:
Ford is studying com-
munication between ro-
bots on the International
Space Station and with
Earth. The project aims to
improve the reliability of
connected vehicle com-
munications which has
the potential to reduce
traffic accidents and ease
congestion by enabling ve-
hicles to communicate
with each other, and en-
able vehicles to communi-
cate with buildings, traffic
lights, the cloud and other
systems to deliver a mes-
sage or detect and respond
to imminent collision
warnings.
Fords industry-first dirt
detection technology uses
high-resolution cameras
to generate a 3D model to
identify and eliminate dirt
particles smaller than a
grain of salt on vehicle
paint surfaces. By using
dirt detection technology,
Ford measured it im-
proved paint quality and
reduced customer com-
plaints of vehicle surface
finish by 82 percent with-
in one year.
Volvos self-driving
cars
Volvo Car Groups
ground-breaking project
Drive Me featuring
100 self-driving Volvos on
public roads in everyday
driving conditions is
moving forward rapidly.
The first test cars are
driving around the
Swedish city of
Gothenburg and the
Autopilot technology is
performing well.
The test cars are now
able to handle lane follow-
ing, speed adaption and
merging traffic all by
themselves, said Erik
Coelingh, technical spe-
cialist at Volvo Car Group.
This is an important step
toward our aim that the fi-
nal Drive Me cars will be
able to drive the whole test
route in highly autono-
mous mode. The technolo-
gy, which will be called
Autopilot, enables the
driver to hand over the
driving to the vehicle,
which takes care of all
driving functions.
The Drive Me project is
unique because it involves
all the key players: legisla-
tors, transport authorities,
a major city, a vehicle
manufacturer and cus-
tomers.
A broad societal ap-
proach is vital to offer sus-
tainable personal mobility
in the future, Coelingh
said.
Volvos Drive-E en-
gines:
Volvos ground-break-
ing Drive-E technology
provides outstanding pow-
er and fuel efficiency.
This range of innovative
four-cylinder powertrains,
coupled with a new
8-speed Adapti ve
Geartronic automatic
gearbox, take driving

supreme power, torque
and fuel efficiency.
The roll-out of the new
Drive-E engines starts
with 180kW petrol and
133kW diesel units
sporting the T5 and D4 no-
menclature's respectively
available now in the
S60, V60 and XC60 model
lines.
The turbocharged pet-
rol T5 Drive-E engine de-
livers 180 kW at 5,500 rpm
and 350 Nm at 1,500-4,800
rpm.
Inflatable Child Seat
Concept:
Volvo Car Group recent-
ly unveiled its revolution-
ary Inflatable Child Seat
Concept and explores the
future of child protection.
Childrens car seats are
bulky, hard to move and
tedious to mount. So Volvo
Cars designed a light-
weight and inflatable rear-
faced child seat concept
using ground-breaking
technology. The seat is
safe, easy to pack and car-
ry and will enable parents
to use it in many situations
not practical with the seats
on the market today.
Volkswagen drive
system
According to Heinz
Jakob-Neuer, a manage-
ment board member at
Volkswagen responsible
for the development divi-
sion, the future drive sys-
tem trends from
Volkswagen in-
clude state-of-the-
art turbocharger
technologies such
as the electric
booster to im-
prove dynamic
torque build-up
that can effective-
ly support future downsiz-
ing strategies.
At the 2014 Vienna
Motor Symposium,
Neuer gave first insights
into the new high-perfor-
mance and high-torque
engines from Volkswagen
such as the new 2.0 litre
TDI bi-turbo with 176 kW
for the new Passat or the
2.0 litre TSI with up to 294
kW for the sportiest Golf
models. He also presented
the latest top develop-
ments in the field of direct-
shift gearbox transmis-
sions: the new 10-speed
for 500 Newton metres of
torque and more.
One of the major chal-
lenges facing the
Volkswagen Group is the
continuous reduction of
CO2 emissions in com-
pliance with different stat-
utory requirements world-
wide. Natural-gas-
powered vehicles are ex-
periencing strong growth
worldwide at an annual
rate of more than 24 per-
cent. With a natural gas
drive module the modu-
lar basic concept of the
Volkswagen EA211 petrol
engine family supports
this development and of-
fers excellent economic
and ecological prerequi-
sites for all kinds of differ-
ent applications with
and without charging
as a 3- or 4-cylinder TSI.
Electrification is a fur-
ther building block for
meeting the ambitious
CO2 targets. The direction
taken with the XL11, e-
up!2 and e-Golf3 is being
consistently pursued with
the latest plug-in hybrid in
the Golf GTE4.
Preparations have already
been made for integrating
fuel cells. The challenges
relating to hydrogen first
and foremost concern
availability and storage.
The advances in tech-
nology can overwhelm the
mind. Check out the cars
just off the line this year.

The Golf Volkswagen is the first manufacturer world-
wide to offer all currently relevant drive technologies in
one model series TSI, TDI, TGI, electric and plug-in hy-
brid drives. Depicted, above, is the new Volkswagen Golf
TDI that arrives in area dealerships this August.
