How long have you been out and who
was the hardest person to tell?
I have been out with my family for 27
years. The hardest to deal with were my
parents because they found out before I
could have the conversation with them.
Whos your LGBT hero?
My LGBTQ shero is my very best
friend June Crenshaw. She is a tireless
and passionate worker in the DMV
community.
Whats Washingtons best
nightspot, past or present?
I used to love Tracks! When I was in
my 20s, I used come up to D.C. and fall
out of a smoke-lled van in front of the
club.
Describe your dream wedding.
A private ceremony on a small island.
As the breeze comes o of the water, the
linen my anc and I are wearing blows
in the breeze. We stand barefoot in cool
sand. While looking into the eyes of the
most amazing and beautiful woman, I
would nervously recite my vows to her in
lyrical poetry and prose. Then we would
come home, throw a huge party and
dance the night away!
What non-LGBT issue are
you most passionate about?
I am most passionate about juvenile
justice. The fact that so many of our
youth nd themselves incarcerated or
on probation because they are often
failed by their parents, the community,
church and their educational system
irritates my soul.
What historical outcome
would you change?
The founding of this country at the
expense of an entire nation of people.
Whats been the most memorable pop
culture moment of your lifetime?
Seeing Prince perform for the 1999
tour when I was 16 years old. If my
mother had only known that he would
be gyrating on a heart-shaped bed, I
would have never been at that concert!
On what do you insist?
I am very smell sensitive. Everything
must be fresh linens, food, women.
What was your last
Facebook post or Tweet?
Dont make me embarrass myself by
doing drag, Support Fall of the House
of Snow or my next step is pole dancing
and I have weak wrists!
If your life were a book, what would
the title be?
Lies Lesbians Tell: Karma is a
Boomerang!
If science discovered a way to change
sexual orientation, what would you do?
Why would I do anything? I am
perfectly happy as a swagtastic lesbian!
What do you believe in
beyond the physical world?
I believe in oneness of being that is
guided by a Great Spirit.
Whats your advice for
LGBT movement leaders?
Some of us need to get out of the
LGBTQ bubble. The messages that
resonate the loudest with people are
those that touch the hearts of our family
and friends. We have too many highly
intellectual ideas and conversations over
cocktails. Lets get the work done and
invest time and money in our youth and
community.
What would you walk
across hot coals for?
My son Jordon and my family.
What LGBT stereotype
annoys you most?
I am annoyed that many people
believe that because a woman assumes
a masculine style of dress she wants
to be a man. I am clear that I am 100
percent woman in boxers and it feels
liberating that I dene who I am as a
woman and defy who others tell me I am
based on clothing I purchased with my
hard-earned money.
Whats your favorite LGBT movie?
Pricilla Queen of the Desert you
gotta love desert drag to ABBA tunes!
Whats the most overrated social
custom?
Texting. I just abhor when my texts are
misinterpreted. Then I have to go back
and forth trying to clarify. You can break
up over a crazy text. I am old fashioned.
Just call me!
What trophy or prize do you most
covet?
I am most proud of winning the 2007
Maryland State Arts Council Award for
my rst play, Fall of the House of Snow.
What do you wish youd known at 18?
I wish I had known the importance of
living my truth and causing as little harm
to those I love and those who love me.
Age has a way of humbling you, or at
least it should.
Why Washington?
With all of its contradictions and
political shenanigans, Washington is
still more liberal than most places and it
attracts people from around the world.
Lots of room to build multi-cultural
relationships.

Though she always had a passion for writing and self-expression, Patricia
R. Corbetts parents discouraged her from pursuing a creative career. But she
always wrote anyway.
I wrote my rst play in elementary school, says the 48-year-old Richmond,
Va., native. My mother kept every bad poem, everything I wrote as a kid. It
was just always the medium I had a strong a nity for.
Friday night at Black Prides opening ceremony, Corbett will receive the
Wemore Cook Award for her work on the Black Pride board and overall in
the community. She says shes very surprised and honored and thinks Black
Pride is still very relevant and very, very important. Her 27-year-old son,
Jordon, is her date for the evening.
Corbett launched her JUSTaSISTA/Girl in a Tie Productions in 1998 and has
been doing the work full-time for the last six months. She previously worked
in the non-prot sector and taught high school and college. Her newest play
Fall of the House of Snow is slated for a Richmond production in December.

Corbett is single and lives in Aspen Hill, Md. She enjoys cooking, playing
Scrabble and touring historic cemeteries in her free time.

Looking actor Gro
leapt at chance to be
in Kramer classic
By KEITH LORIA
When director Ryan Murphy and writer
Larry Kramer (both out) announced they
were adapting Kramers groundbreaking
and Tony-winning play The Normal
Heart for HBO, a virtual whos who
of stars clamored to take part in the
powerful and emotional story that deals
with the onset of the AIDS crisis in New
York City in the early 1980s.
The cast quickly lled with respected
names like Julia Roberts, Mark Rualo, Jim
Parsons, Taylor Kitsch and Matt Bomer.
The Normal Heart follows Ned Weeks
(Rualo), a gay activist enraged at the
indierence of public o cials and the
gay community. Bomer plays a reporter
who becomes Neds lover; former Friday
Night Lights star Kitsch plays Bruce, a
closeted investment banker who becomes
a prominent AIDS activist; Roberts plays Dr.
Emma Brookner, who treats some of the
earliest victims of the epidemic; and Parsons
portrays gay activist Tommy Boatwright,
reprising his critically praised Broadway role.
One actor who was dreaming of taking
part was Jonathan Gro. Although too
young to remember the events of the time,
the 29-year-old had seen the play during
its O-Broadway revival in 2004 and again
when it opened on Broadway in 2011.
I had seen it several times and its
such an important piece of writing and
it means so much, Gro says. When I
learned HBO would be turning it into a
lm, something that would last forever, I
wanted to be part of it.
Luckily, Gro already had a relationship
with Murphy, having worked with him
on Glee, playing the one-time Vocal
Adrenaline powerhouse Jesse St. James.
Ryan texted me and said he had this
part for me in the movie, and I called him
back right away and said, Absolutely, I
would do anything in this movie because
its such a special project, Gro recalls. I
feel very lucky to be in it.
In the movie, Gro plays Craig Donner,
a character barely mentioned in the play,
but one who has an extremely important
role in the lm. He plays the boyfriend of
Bruce and ex-boyfriend of Ned.
Craig is based on one of Larrys friends
from Fire Island, when the gay cancer at
the time started hitting this circle of friends,
and Craig was the rst one to go, Gro says.
It hit him so quickly that when he died, his
body was still tan. It was horrifying.
For the part, Gro worked on location
at Fire Island, shooting some of the
earliest scenes of the movie.
We did a bunch of the boys partying it
up on Fire Island, he says. It was nice to be
at the beginning of the movie. We were all
having a blast, and then it got pretty dark.
With longtime friend Lea Michele by his
side, Gro joined the cast for an opening
night screening last week at New York Citys
Ziegfeld Theater and said it was unlike any
movie premiere he had ever attended.
Here we are at the Ziegfeld with the
whole cast and crew and a lot of the
men and women who lived through the
AIDS crisis in New York City at the time
and watching it in that venue was just
incredibly powerful and a night I will
never forget, he says. Everyone in that
room felt so personally connected to the
story we were telling. It is such an amazing
movie and has such an eect on people
some had to walk out because it was
so much. When we left the theater, there
was that same sadness and reverence
you have when you leave a funeral, it was
a really powerful experience.
Gro admits that the movie is a little
dierent from the play, but that it almost had
to be to pull o its importance on screen.
Ryan is so visual, so he creates some
amazing pictures and the way he pulls
the story together has the spirit of
the play and a lot of those same lines
and speeches that we love, but theres
something very specically Ryan Murphy
about the movie that makes the sensibility
a little dierent, he says. Its the same
overall experience, but you are served it
in a dierent way.
The Normal Heart debuts on HBO at
9 p.m. Sunday and is expected to be seen
by millions, a far greater reach than the
play ever could secure.
When its on a network like HBO that
everyone looks to as the benchmark
of quality programing, you get a lot of
people paying attention to what they put
out, Gro says. We have Taylor and Julia
and Matt and Mark, and hopefully it adds
a lot of eyes to the story of those who
wouldnt have watched it before and that
reach grows once the movie starts to air.
In addition to being part of this landmark
movie, Gro has had a pretty exciting year
already. He starred in HBOs new series,
Looking, which will be returning for
season two this fall and voiced Kristo in
Disneys mega-hit Frozen.
The movie exploded in ways that I
dont think anyone who worked on it
thought it would, certainly we all thought
it was great, but you can never predict a
phenomenon, he says. I feel extremely
lucky to be a part of this history.
For those who know him from his Tony-
nominated role of Melchior Gabor in
Spring Awakening or one of the many
other theatrical productions hes done,
Gro says he is itching to get back to the
Great White Way.
I rented an apartment in New York a
couple of weeks ago and I spent every
night last week watching plays. I am a
theater nerd and a fan and I try to see
everything and I want to be back on that
stage. Its just hard to nd the time and
nd the right project, but its something I
denitely hope to be doing soon.
Born in 1985, Gro feels he is part of a
younger gay generation whose members
dont always understand the history of
those who came before. He hopes the
movie will change the way that some
approach their advocacy eorts.
I think theres a disconnectedness that
my generation has in some ways for the
AIDS crisis and what the generation before
us went thought emotionally but fought for
and got political and advocated about, he
says. I hope probably more than anything
that the movie reaches my generation and
not only teaches us about what happened
before us, but inspires us to advocate and
stay connected to each other and protect
each other and continue to be vocal.

From the Heart
British import improbable
but engaging
By PATRICK FOLLIARD
Is sexuality set in stone?
In his titillatingly titled Cock, British
playwright Mike Bartlett explores
that often asked question through
protagonist John, a youngish gay man
who cant decide whether to stay with
what he knows a stale relationship
with another man or pursue the new
found joys of heterosexual bliss with a
woman hes recently met.
Cock is funny but painfully real, too.
Crisply staged by David Muse, Studios
production is fast paced and features a
terric cast that successfully plumbs their
parts for whats likable and what isnt.
There are no props. Debra Booths set is
simple a circular sandbox. Overhead
hang uorescent tubes. Its the perfect pit
for a wrestling match, cockght, or battle
of words. Scenes are like boxing rounds
but each ends with a buzzer rather than
a ding. Hitting below the belt is allowed.
John (Ben Cole) is unhappy with his
older boyfriend simply known as M (Scott
Parkinson). While taking a brief respite
from the relationship, John has a ing with
a woman, W (Liesel Allen Yeager). After
several weeks, a contrite John returns to M
bearing a teddy bear and the news of his
aair. M is both incredulous and enraged.
Despite going back to M, John continues
to see W. She is aware that John is gay and
knows of his life with M, but is undeterred.
For the youngish divorcee, John is a way
to stave o the loneliness that sets in
on Saturday afternoons. Together they
imagine romantic jaunts to Paris and
future holidays surrounded by contented
ospring. Shes charmed by his halo of
disorganization. A relationship develops.
To soften the blow of his indelity,
John describes his decidedly feminine
new girlfriend to M as manly. The
ever snarky M responds with a barrage
of tranny jokes along with some other
unsavory cracks. John retorts with
annihilating blasts of truth: Youre not
as good-looking as you think you are, he
tells his older boyfriend. Youre lucky to
have me. John informs M that the sex is
better with his newfound girlfriend. Yet
M remains steadfast in his attachment.
Along with his excellent job and great
apartment, John is a trophy that hes
reluctant to let go.
Then the script becomes a tad
improbable. The trio decides to meet at M
and Johns place for dinner to hash things
out. M invites his supportive, widowed
father (Bruce Dow) for backup. Dow does a
wonderful job, but this production calls for
an older actor. Unsurprisingly, the evening
devolves into something less than polite.
After all, M and W are ghting for the
same man. Thrown by her far-from-manly
looks, M makes digs at Ws career, bitchily
asking why she doesnt have a real job. (W
is a teachers assistant. M is stockbroker.
Were told John works but what he does is
never revealed.) W is less rude, but then
she can aord to be. She goes into the
dinner condent that shes going to win
John, the dithering prize.
Unfortunately, its up to the
excruciatingly indecisive John to make all
the decisions.
Cock is as much about the power
dynamics in relationships as it is about
sexuality. Its about bending anothers will
to meet ones own needs. Whos in charge
the dominant or passive partner? In an
intense scene, the plays most compelling,
M struggles to regain dominance over
John. Will he succeed? Its uncertain.
With Cock, Studio powerfully concludes
its New British Invasion Festival, a
marvelous celebration that has showcased
some incredibly accomplished and
innovative plays by British writers under 40.

Its more about overall
respect than carbon
footprint size
DEAR MICHAEL,
Im struggling with my long-time
girlfriend because we have very dierent
stands on an issue thats extremely
important to me.
Ive been passionately involved in
environmental advocacy since high
school and now am employed by an
environmental nonprot. Im highly
invested in my work because I believe
that there is no more important issue
than keeping our planet livable. So in
my personal life, I aim to live sustainably
(usually walking/biking, small though very
comfy condo, mainly vegan diet).
Marissa has very dierent priorities
from me. She sometimes mocks my work
and my choices, telling me that Im really
not going to make a dierence, and that
Im too severe, although I treat myself
very well and enjoy my lifestyle. When she
talks like this, I feel really disrespected
and unsupported. And when I ask her to
stop, she says shes only joking and that I
have no sense of humor.
On the ip side, its true that I dont
respect some of her choices lets
just say shes leaving a pretty big
environmental footprint. I dont really
hide my reactions from her and while she
usually blows them o, this whole thing is
causing frequent tension.
To make matters seriously worse,
lately Ive been lled with tremendous
despair as signs of global warming are
becoming more ominous. Im starting
to feel hopeless about the future and
wonder what the point is of even having
a relationship, much less having kids as
weve planned, when the planet is going
to hell. My bleak mood isnt helping us
have many good times recently, and is
increasing the tension because Marissa
thinks my worrying is ridiculous.
Believe it or not, outside of this stu,
which is major, we have had a great
connection and many good times.
Intellectually, I believe that two people with
dierent priorities can be a couple, but is
there such a thing as being too dierent?
MICHAEL REPLIES:
I often tell couples I work with that the
hardest part about being in a relationship
is guring out how to deal with the major
dierences that inevitably arise between
two people. Every couple has to deal
with this struggle at some points in their
relationship.
The most important thing for both you
and Marissa to remember is that you
arent going to convince the other person
that you are right and she is wrong. Its
pointless to try and will only result in
each of you feeling disrespected, just as
is happening now.
Yes, its hard to respect someone
elses decisions and actions when theyre
antithetical to your deeply held beliefs.
Nevertheless, its not possible for you to
change how your girlfriend thinks and
behaves, so the best that you can do is
accept that she has some aspects that
you really dislike, and decide whether you
want to stay with her anyway. The same
is true for Marissa, of course, and for all
couples with major disagreements.
I want to advocate for each of you to
stop overtly criticizing the other, whether
in jest or in disgust. All this does is create
bad feelings. That isnt to say that you
should start pretending that you love your
girlfriends choices when theyre actually
the opposite of all you believe. Its about
being respectful in your manner, words,
tone and facial expressions. And although
you can never count on changing your
partner, you may nd that youre actually
better positioned to inuence her to see
your point of view when you arent hitting
her over the head with the righteousness
of your position. Again, I say this to both
you and Marissa, and to all couples who
have dierent points of view about
weighty issues.
As far as your hopelessness goes, I can
certainly understand it, as our planets
wellbeing seems ever more in danger.
Only you can decide if its worth your living
with hope in the face of possible calamity,
while doing all you can to help bring about
a better future. I do know that life is always
fragile, and that none of us ever has a
guarantee of how things will turn out.
I wish you the best in your relationship
and in your important work.

Swimmer Todd Harvey is
already veteran champ
for D.C. Aquatics Club
By KEVIN MAJOROS
When Todd Harvey was living in Austin,
Texas, he was looking to get back into the
sport of swimming but was unable to nd
a team that was a good match for him.
At the end of 2012, his job in public health
administration at the National Alliance of
State & Territorial AIDS Directors moved
him to Washington and he was still itching
to get back in the water.
I didnt know many people here, says
Harvey, 34. Besides wanting to get back
into swimming, I wanted to expand my
friendship base in a healthy way.
He joined the District of Columbia
Aquatics Club within a few months of
moving to D.C. and has already proven
himself a valuable asset to the team
winning nine medals at the International
Gay & Lesbian Aquatics Championships
in Seattle last August.
Harvey grew up in Uniontown, Pa., and
went through the sports of soccer and
wrestling before discovering swimming at
age 10. He joined the local YMCA, fell in
love with the sport and went on to captain
his high school swim team.
This August, Harvey will compete at the
2014 Gay Games in Cleveland in the 50,
100 & 200 buttery, 50 backstroke and
200 freestyle. His training leading up to
the Games will consist of swimming four-
to-ve times a week, weightlifting and
solidcore training.
Harvey remains dedicated to the sport
of swimming for a number of reasons.
I think the best thing about swimming
as an adult is that I have found an
incredible team, says Harvey. DCAC is
a serious group of well-trained, amazing
athletes, who push one another to put
forth their best eorts in the pool. We
also do a lot of things socially and provide
emotional support for one another when
it is needed.
One thing that seems to be a common
denominator for all competitive
swimmers, Harvey says, is the love of
the rush that comes right before a race.
There is no time for mistakes in a race
and the desire to perform their best puts
pressure squarely on the shoulders of
each swimmer.
Swimming is my time to feel athletic and
t. I love being able to measure myself now
versus my old self. There is no better feeling
than when you feel good in the water. Its
my runway walk and I feel strong.
This will be Harveys rst Gay Games
and he is looking forward to experiencing
the LGBT athletic community, swimming
fast and seeing Cleveland from a new
perspective.
He also gamely admits there will be a
fun side to the proceedings as well.
I am really looking forward to the on-deck
gossip. Who met who, who did what and did
you see what he looks like in that Speedo?

TODD HARVEY says being in the water is his runway walk time.

Setting a price is one of
Realtors toughest tasks
By DAVID HOWELL
One of the great evolutions in real estate
over the last decade is the power of the Inter-
net, and more than 90 percent of homebuy-
ers begin their search there. We think thats
great, and buyers are more empowered than
ever with loads of information. Some of that
information can come from sites like Zillow
that oer whats called an automated valua-
tion model AVM for short that purportedly
presents a great estimate of the current mar-
ket value of millions of homes.
Its cool technology, amassing an enor-
mous amount of information from publicly
available sources in one place that is then
scrubbed through very sophisticated algo-
rithms to predict value. And all of that is pre-
sented in an easy-to-use user interface. And
to their enormous credit, Zillow has done a
tremendous job in reaching top of mind
status with consumers. Theres just one
problem: Those predicted values are wildly
inaccurate and inconsistent.
As Realtors, we know that one of our most
di cult tasks is pricing a home. That holds
true whether we are representing a seller
or a buyer. Market pressures change from
week to week and from neighborhood to
neighborhood. The motivation of the par-
ties is always a factor, as is the condition of
a home and those around it. No algorithm,
however sophisticated, can quantify the
value of a kitchen that was remodeled just
before a home was put on the market or a
yard that is poorly maintained. It simply isnt
possible for any AVM to predict the value of
a home with a level of accuracy su cient to
make a housing decision. Zillow knows thats
true and they say as much on their web-
site (although you have to dig a bit to nd
it). They have this to say about their zesti-
mates of value:
The Zestimate is not an appraisal and you
wont be able to use it in place of an appraisal,
though you can certainly share it with real es-
tate professionals. It is a computer-generated
estimate of the worth of a house today, given
the available data. Zillow does not oer the
Zestimate as the basis of any specic real-
estate-related nancial transaction. Our data
sources may be incomplete or incorrect; also,
we have not physically inspected a specic
home. Remember, the Zestimate is a starting
point and does not consider all the market in-
tricacies that can determine the actual price a
house will sell for.
Yet not a week goes by that we dont en-
counter a consumer who is xated on a par-
ticular value for a home because thats what
Zillow says it is. Kudos to Zillow for making this
kind of impression on the public brilliant mar-
keting. But our research shows that, on aver-
age, those zestimates are within 5 percent
of the actual value of a home just half of the
time. (Funny, thats what their research shows
as well.) As Realtors, if we got within 5 percent
of the value of a home that infrequently wed
be out of business.
So if a consumer wants to base their valua-
tion of a home purchase or sale on what they
nd on the Internet, we suggest they take out
a coin and ip it. Heads that value is within
5 percent (high or low) of what the home is
actually worth. Tails that value could be 10
percent, 20 percent or more o target.
How accurate
are Zestimates?
A detailed analysis of 500 recent sales in
Metro Washington, D.C.: Beginning in 2010,
McEnearney Associates has examined the
accuracy of the estimates for property values
that Zillow provides their zestimates of
value. This marks our fourth and most com-
prehensive analysis.
We took 500 properties in MRIS, our region-
al multiple listing system, that were scheduled
to settle between March 24 and March 31,
2014. During that week, we looked for the
zestimates of those 500 properties. Once the
properties settled, we compared the actual
sold price to the predicted values on Zillow.
And to be as fair as possible, we excluded new
home sales from our research because it is
highly unlikely that Zillow would have details
of the home to be built.
To provide some context, we compared
the results of the March 2014 research to
that of our September 2012 research. In
2012, we researched 280 properties, and
we were able to nd a zestimate for all
280. In the research we just concluded, we
were able to nd values for all but two of
the 500 properties.
Generally, Zillows predicted market value is
not any better now than it was 18 months ago.
The zestimate is within 5 percent of the actual
sales price roughly half the time. In September
2012, the zestimate was just as likely to be too
low as too high; now, it is roughly twice as likely
to be too low.
As one might expect with a computer-
generated value, there are always outli-
ers. In September 2012, of the 280 zesti-
mates, the highest was roughly 140 percent
of the actual sales prices. The lowest was 82
percent. In the research we just concluded,
the highest predicted value was 256 per-
cent of the actual sales price and the lowest
was 62.8 percent.
There are signicant geographic dier-
ences in Zillows performance in our current
research. They get within 5 percent of the ac-
tual sales price just over a third of the time for
properties in Washington, DC, and within 10
percent of the sales price less than 60 percent
of the time. They are within 5 percent of sales
price 43 percent of the time in Maryland and
almost 60 percent in Virginia.
Zillow is a bit less accurate for condo
and coops than for attached or detached
homes. Mirroring the overall results, in all
three property types Zillow is at least twice
as likely to predict a value that is at least 5
percent lower than the actual value as pre-
dicting 5 percent high.
Not surprisingly, those properties that sold
for $1,000,000 and more were a little tougher
for Zillow to estimate accurately. They got
within 5 percent of the actual price just over
one third of the time. They fared much bet-
ter for homes selling between $500,000 and
$999,999, getting within 5 percent almost 60
percent of the time, but for homes selling for
less than $500,000 they were within 5 percent
less than half the time.
