Graphic Design/Commercial Art/Illustration

Syllabus
Course description and objectives
Tis class will give students an opportunity to express and design creative ideas visually for
a growing feld. Commercial art concepts and design strategies will be explored using design
principles and art elements for creating ads, logos, newsletters, magazine covers, posters
and more. Students will learn to create and design artwork for projects using Adobe sofware.
A fnal DVD with student artwork will be created for a digital portfolio.

Print Port-folio/Notebook
Students will maintain a folder for all printed assignments.
Tis is to be kept in the classroom.
Contents of notebook:
Cover page (Students will design)
Printed and graded assignments returned to students
All vocabulary terms and defnitions students will type, and returned quizzes/tests
Students notes on assignments and assignment instructions
*notebook will be checked every Friday (plus or minus will be given)

(a) General requirements. Graphic design includes the knowledge and application of
creative design, theory, principles, and practices as related to communication media.
(b) Rapid advances in technology have created new career opportunities, and de-
mands
in trades and industry. T&I supports integration of academic and career and
technology knowledge and skills.

Term papers (as assigned)
Advertising Application of technical and time management skills
Interface / functions in InDesign
Anatomy of type
Layout design, text formatting and image importing
(Class projects refecting text wrap, tabs, columns, use of fonts)
Design a newsletter format and layout functions -InDesign
File formats-explore characteristics of vector and bit-map fles.
( image manipulation- functional and decorative art)
Draw-scan artwork and transfer fles for manipulation in
Photoshop, placing images in InDesign
Package all fles in InDesign for output
Explore the emotional impact of color and how it applies to
cultural diversity
Create colors practice adjusting opacity, hues, value, and
saturation. (Digital color manipulation and design projects)

Student will be responsible for asking teacher about any make-up work or assignments that
are due afer
an absence. Student will be responsible for scheduling/coordinating the make-up time with
teacher.
Missing grades and make up work will only be accepted within days afer absence.
(Failure to make up work will be a zero)
Any test must be scheduled for makeup with-in a fve day period.

Classroom Rules/Expectations Please......
No food or drinks allowed in the classroom or computer lab (Gum must not be seen or heard)
No perfume, hand lotion, or makeup to be used/applied in the classroom or computer lab.
Backpacks and purses may be placed on the foor next to computer or lef in wall pockets
in the lab area. Tey are not to be on table next to computers.
Chairs must be pushed in before leaving classroom/lab. No rolling in chairs and feet on the foor
(not on tables or chairs)
Computers are to be lef in the same confguration as found. Leave desktop as is. NO CHANGES
Folders are not to be opened on the desktop, other than the one assigned to each student.
Opening another students folder is a violation that can result in revoking your computer
privileges in this class.
Elecronic devices only to be used (per district policy)
As in the workplace, cell phone use and texting is inappropriate except during breaktime or lunch.
No cell phone use except during that time. If there is an emergency during class for use, please
see teacher.
Use applications and equipment only as instructed.
Be respectful of other students and teacher.
No profane language will be used in classroom.
Before the end of class:
All notebooks will be put back in the assigned place.
All materials, magazines, and handouts must be put back in their appropriate place.
IDs are to be worn at all times. (IDs required for use of digital devices)
Do not work on other assignments when given a class/lab assignment
Do not put head down or sleep while in class
Participation in class discussions encouraged
Academic dishonestycheating or plagiarismis not acceptable. Cheating includes the
copying of
another students work, homework, class work, test answers, etc. as ones own. Plagia-
rism is the use of
another persons original ideas or writing without giving credit to the true author. A
student found to have
engaged in academic dishonesty will be subject to loss of credit for the work in question,
as well as
disciplinary penalties, according to the Student Code of Conduct.
