Voting Wasteland
In the history of America people have died for the right to vote but tragically apathetic voters are
prevalent in this country. In a country where citizens pride themselves on "life, liberty, and the
pursuit of happiness" it is apparent that many people lack the same zeal once held by the
founding fathers and the pioneers who lead the way for the freedom to voice their vote. Given
the widespread apathy it is time for Americans to preserve this right by encouraging all citizens
to do their duty. One method that would assist in this would be to penalize citizens by higher tax
rates in the near future. The future of America depends on voters because this ensures that all
citizens are truly represented in helping vote into office those who will make decisions for our
country. With less and less votes each election the voice the American people once had is slowly
fading away.

The voting population is turning into an apocalyptic wasteland and the people who still vote are
the fallout survivors. Over 66% of Americans did not vote in the 2008 presidential election and
the state election had even more percentage of non-voters. Most citizens who can vote say they
were either too busy or they had no way of reaching the ballot boxes. Others said they did not
like who was running so they chose not to vote for either candidates. These issues are very well
guised excuses Americans have been developing over the years. Due to these excuses Americans
have made the next generation are poorly informed on just how important voting is. These
Perez 2

children are struggling to know whether they should choose to vote or not is an epidemic that is
sweeping the nation. In an attempt to reach a younger generation more television broadcasting
station, such as Nickolodeon, are encouraging young viewers to stay informed on voting. They
are using this platform to show children how crucial their vote is once they turn eighteen. In turn,
the added bonus may be that children are also encouraging their parents to vote as well.

Voting in American has become quite telling. The information collected during voter registration
and the actual voting process helps to identify many different facts regarding voter
demographics. One area that has proven useful in identifying voter apathy is looking at "voter
class levels". Statistics show that most voters come from both extremes of the economical levels
which includes upper an lower socioeconomic classes. It appears this is due to the fact that both
classes are affected most by the policies instituted by elected government officials. To continue
to encourage voter turnout these voters should be recognized for their voting and compensated
for all that they do for their country. Compensations could be maybe be made an arrangement to
where everyone who voted would receive a two percent increase on their tax deductible. The
second area identified in voter statistics is based on ethnicity. Certain ethnic groups are known
for their absence in voting in the polls. In the 2012 presidential election only 35% of Latin
Americans who had the right to vote voted that year. When asked why they did vote most
Latinos stated that they hoped their candidate would provide them with jobs. Even though some
felt like this would not happen many still choose not vote thinking that it will change everything.
They failed to understand that their apathy and decision not to vote is responsible for the
problems they often deal with. To discourage this behavior nonvoters should be fined or even
penalized with higher taxation in a similar fashion to the current tax proposed for those without

insurance.

Government also bears a responsibility to help citizens fulfill their dirty. If Americans are found
guilty of not voting the government should step into action to the point of where they take a
voting census right after election days. The government has the responsibility to show citizens
that voting is a privilege that cannot be ignored. Neglecting this privilege is not a moral choice
but rather a blatant disregard of the freedom so many men and women have given their lives for.
Voter apathy continues to only demonstrate the disconnect between ordinary citizens and
government. In many ways it shows a loss of integrity as true Americans. A true American uses
his voice in everything to stand up for what this country believed in when it was founded. Voting
in America is arguably the most important institution that America established in its early days
and can still be seen as such due to how much power it can have on a political ecosystem that
runs the country. Presidents have always tried to encourage Americans to vote by saying that
they are the change and they make the difference. If this right, this privilege, and this gift is
neglected the nonvoters should be also given a certain amount of elections they will have to vote
for or be fined later on in life.

Voter apathy can be fought in many ways especially advertisement. Voter apathy was very well
fought in the election of 2008 with Barack Obamas Yes We Can which improved not only his
ratings but voting scores as well. Its advertisements like these for voting that make voting an
appealing activity. If more candidates and elected officials made voting more appealing like
America did with smoking more people would vote. Also it has been a very effective strategy for
the Democratic and Republican parties to have celebrities voting for them. This strategy of

human advertising makes voters want to follow a role model of theirs and vote not only in
general but also the candidate they are backing up. Another idea to promote voting is possibly a
way to promote a community get together and allow everyday citizens to meet celebrities or even
.Life is full of choices in the voting world and people who do not vote do not understand the true
consequences of them not voting. The voters who do vote have been statistically proven to vote
fifty-fifty on both the Democrat and Republican parties. Due to this fifty-fifty split in the
government no real progress could happen because both sides had equal say and one did over
vote the other. These indecisions have also made Americans angry because they want to see
progress but they do not see any change or the change they want to see in the country. The
reason for that being is because their fellow Americans or even the complainers do not take their
responsibility of voting seriously.

most people do not understand that the government is very dependent on its voters for help in
political choices for Americas future. Another reason why citizens do not vote is because they
do not know the importance of their say in Americas future which is a worrying sight in
America.

In the eyes of other countries in Europe mostly America is seen as a failing society as it
has always been seen as since the American Revolution. They believe that the ideology of a
democracy was entirely crazy at first. No other country had given as much power to the citizens
as America has done. Another thing America has been trying to do for their citizens is inform
them on how important it is to vote and stay connected and up to date in politics.\
Voting is the most important responsibility an American has when it comes to being a
patriotic and helpful citizen. If more people would vote then the country would see the change
they want to see. Like the old saying they have to be the change they want to see in the world so
they must choose the right choic3 of voting. If the country stressed on how important it is to vote
by setting in rewards and negative consequences for the voters and nonvoters then Americans
across the country would start to see voting differently in the eyes of a true citizen of United
States of America.
