THE BLIND COMMUNITY AN THEIR STRIVE FOR
INDEPENDENCE
INTRODUCTION
A survey in 2009 said that there are 11,500 registered blind people in New Zealand, and it is
projected that by 2020 the number will increase by 56.5% making it around 18,000 people
1
.
We also found that there arent many help offered for the blind community in most places,
making the blind community not as comfortable as other people. This makes our team came
out with a solution which is software for printing braille (universal language for blind
people) menu to be used in one of the most visited place, Cafes and Restaurants. Our
product allows cafes and restaurants to print off their menu in the form of braille, making it
easier and faster for the blind people to place their order, but what is more important is
that we make the blind community feels as comfortable as people who are not when visiting
these places.
3. BUSINESS SECTION
3.1 Vision
To create and develop a technology that makes the blind community feels as comfortable as
people who are not, and not have to struggle the way others dont.
3.2 Industry Analysis: Disability services industry
Industry: Disability services industry.
Force: High/Low: Justification:
Buyer power: Low There are not many choices of products offered
by the industry itself. And specifically in the blind
area of the industry, braille isnt something that

are frequently offered.
Supplier power: High Consumer have a few choices of products,
causing people who needed the services will use
anything that the industry offers.
2

Threat of new entrants: Low Disability services arent a high caliber industry.
Not many people are aware of it. Even if they are
aware of it, its not easy to dive and compete in
the industry since disability services devices may
cost a lot of money and time.
Threat of substitutes: Low Because there not many different organizations in
the industry that make the same product. Usually
different organizations focus on different
products.
Rivalry among existing
competitors:
Low In this industry, competition isnt really the
priority of the organizations inside the industry,
but its more important for the organizations to
provide a good service in order to cure or to aid
the ones who needed it.
Overall attractiveness of the industry: The disability services industry is not an easy industry
to be in, Even the rivalry between the organizations in the industry is not high, it is real
difficult being inside the industry since it is who makes more profit anymore but its about
helping the disabled and improving their accesibility.

3.3 Customers and Thei r Needs
The main customers/buyers would be the cafes and restaurant that productivity has
decrease when dealing with people with sight loss, meaning that it cost much more time.
However, the blind community are the one who will get most benefit out of this product,
since the main focus is to improve their accesibility.
Cafes and restaurant may have some problem when dealing with people who have major
sight loss. It will cost them much more time and will decrease their productivity. Our
product will help them fulfil their need which is to improve their productivity while making
a service for the blind community. As for the blind people, they must have wanted to be
more indpendent, not relying to other people, and not to become a burden for the
businesses. Our products will make them more comfortable, since they dont have to rely on
other people when placing order in these places, all they need to do is to read the menu and
make the order just like everyone else.
3.4 The Product and Service
Our product is simple. When the software is connected to the printer, it will automatically
prints out their menu in braille, and ready to be used by the blind community like its a
normal menu. This will improve productivity for the cafes and restaurants by making the
blind community place their order as fast as other people. It will also helps the blind
community to be more comfortable because all they need to do is read the menu and
decide what they want to have.
3.5 Suppliers and Partners
Our suppliers would be the printer company and also the paper company. The printer
company played crucial roles in our product, because they are actually the one who make
the products physically, since we only develop the software. And as for the paper company,
we are using their paper for the menu that we used
Our partners would be the cafes and restaurant that uses our product. Because they got
benefit from our product which is to help the blind community and also to improve their

productivity when dealing with blind people. On the other hand we also got benefit from
them, which is the cafes and restaurant also helps to promote our product.
3.6 Strategy: Focused High Costs
Our product will more likely to be focused high costs. Our narrow and focused market only
target cafes and restaurant for our buyers, and are looking to benefit the blind people
directly, even though other customers may also be benefited but not directly. As for the
cost, it will cost us a lot of money to create the software and also buying the printer, and
will have to be sold in a quite expensive range.
The overall strategy is therefore Focused High Costs
3.7 Value Chain Activity:
The most important value chain activity for this business is Technology Development
Technology development is the most important value chain activity because our project
involves many research on the blind community as well as developing the technology that
can be used easily by the business and helpful for the blind community in order to achieve
our vision. The technology are used in most phases of our products, including the
production (creating the software and connecting it to the printer) and when using the
product (Printing the braille menu). The technlogy that we used will not be cheap as it is said
on our strategy, however it will still helps us to have impact on the business which is to
improve productivity and the customers satisfactions.

3.8 Business Processes
3.8.1. PRI NTER AND SOFTWARE ORDERING PROCESS It is a process that needs to be done by
both the cafes and restaurant and our organizations. This process includes the business
ordering the product, and then us sending the printer and also installing our software to the
cafes and restaurant. This procecss is really important, because without this process, there
are no sides that are being benefitted by it since they dont receive the product and we
dont get the income from them.

3.8.2. BRAILLE MENU PRI NTING PROCESS This is another key process for this project. This
process involves the actual creation of the final product so that it is ready to give to the
blind customers. This process needs to be done when the business (cafes or restaurants)
approached by a blind customers. This process is important because its the main objective
of the product which is to print the braille menu.

3.10 Systems

3.10. 1. CUSTOMER ANALYSIS SYSTEM This system is used to analyse the data of the
customers. For example how many customers have sight loss or blindness. This support the
functionality of recording how many people needed the braille menu. The system can also
be used for predicting what the numbers on sight loss and blindness will be in the future, so
that our organizations can think of a new ideas for the product.
3.10. 2. INVENTORY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM - The inventory management system helps us to
keep tracks of the printer stocks in our warehouse. The system will tell us when the stock is
low so that we have to buy the printers. This system will also keep track for every single
printer coming in or going out to a cafes or a restaurants. The system supports sending
products to cafes and restaurants function.
3.10. 3. ORDER PROCESSI NG SYSTEM The order processing system will record every order
and the transaction made for the printer. The system will for every order from the cafes and
restaurants or our order to the printer company, this also includes the money transaction so
that we could give the data to the accounting department. This will support every aspects in
the printer and software ordering process.

CONCLUSION
As for the conclusion, our product is simply a software that will print a menu in braille
(universal language for blind people) when connected to a special printer that our
organizations bought from the printer company. The main impact or value that our products
