Brain:
Alcohol interferes with the brains
communication pathways, and can affect the
way the brain looks and works. These
disruptions can change mood and behavior,
and make it harder to think clearly and move
with coordination.
Heart:
Long-term drinking or binge drinking can damage the heart quite severly. It can
cause:
Cardiomyopathy Stretching and drooping of heart muscle
Arrhythmias Irregular heart beat
Stroke
High blood pressure
Liver:
Heavy drinking can also affect the liver. The liver can only process a certain
amount of alcohol and excess alcohol can cause liver inflammations including:
Steatosis, or fatty liver
Alcoholic hepatitis
Fibrosis
Cirrhosis
Pancreas:
Alcohol causes the pancreas to produce toxic substances that can eventually
lead to pancreatitis, a dangerous inflammation and swelling of the blood
vessels in the pancreas that prevents proper digestion.
Cancer:
Drinking too much alcohol can also increase your risk of developing quite a few
cancers including:
Mouth
Esophagus
Throat
Liver
Breast
Immune System:
Drinking too much alcohol can weaken your immune system meaning that your
body is much more vulnerable to infections and diseases as it cannot fight
them off. It is much more common for chronic drinkers to get diseases like
pneumonia and tuberculosis than ordinary drinkers. Drinking a lot at one time
slows your bodys ability to fight off infections. This can last upto 24 hours
after being drunk.
Effects on Body from Smoking
Head and Mouth
Cancer of the mouth.
Gum disease
Tooth decay
Bad breath
Teeth become unsightly and yellow
Frequent headaches
Lack of oxygen and narrowed blood vessels to the brain can lead to
strokes.
Lungs and Bronchi
The smoke passes through the bronchi, or breathing tubes. Hydrogen cyanide
and other chemicals in the smoke attack the lining of the bronchi, inflaming
them and causing that chronic smokers cough. Because the bronchi are
weakened, youre more likely to get bronchial infections. Mucus secretion in
your lungs is impaired, also leading to chronic coughing. Smokers are 10 times
as likely to get lung cancer and emphysema as nonsmokers.
Heart
The effects of smoking on your heart are devastating. Nicotine raises blood
pressure and makes the blood clot more easily. Carbon monoxide steals
oxygen out of the blood and leads to the development of cholesterol deposits
on the artery walls. All of these effects add up to an increased risk of heart
attack. In addition, the poor circulation resulting from cholesterol deposits can
cause strokes, loss of circulation in fingers and toes and impotence.
Digestive Organs
Tars causes cancer of the esophagus and throat
Increased stomach acid secretion
Heartburn and ulcers
Higher rates of pancreatic cancer
Carcinogens from cigarettes can cause bladder cancer
High blood pressure from smoking can also damage the kidneys
