2 SMART WRIST BAND- PORTABLE MEDICAL DEVICE FOR DIABETES INTRODUCTION Diabetes is a national problem that affects 225,000 of New Zealanders (Diabetes.org.nz, 2014). More people in NZ die from diabetes than any other disease. Many patients do not have access to technology that allows for efficient, on-time monitoring of blood sugar levels. This leads on to fatalities, psychological and physical problems in some patients. This problem is cause by the lack of medical technology, lack of awareness of the disease and also the cost. Our solution is a Smart Wrist Band (SWB), a wearable band which will measure temperature, skin conductivity, restlessness and sweat. The wrist band will interpret the data and sound an alarm if a hypoglycaemic episode will occur. The alarm will also alert emergency services. It will allow patients to monitor their insulin levels and give them piece of mind in their day to day lives. There is no current technology that incorporates these ideas. 3. BUSINESS SECTI ON 3.1 Vi si on Our vision is to provide diabetic patients worldwide with access to medical technology that allows for efficient, on-time and accurate monitoring of blood sugar levels to decrease the side-effects of psychological and physical problems in diabetic patients on a global scale. 3.2 Industry Anal ysi s: Portabl e Medi cal Devi ces for Di abetes Industry Industry: Portable Medical Devices For Diabetes Force: High/Low: Justification: Buyer Power Low The patient has no other alternative to correctly measure their symptoms, so there is only one option available so they will have little power over the industry of Portable Medical Devices as it is a specialised industry. Supplier Power Low The supplier has little power in the industry as there are many different companies that can supply the raw materials to make these products Threat of Substitute Products or Services Low There will little threat of substitute products as these are specialised medical products. There very few substitutes these are very inconvenient ways of testing blood sugar levels. Threat of New Entrants Low Threat of new entrants is also a low force as there is a high cost
3
3 set-up to enter the industry, so there are strong barriers to entry. Rivalry among existing competitors Low Because this industry is a niche market (specialised in medicine) there are no competitors that can supply portable medical devices.
Overall attractiveness of the industry: The Portable Medical Devices industry is attractive due to the low forces that act upon the industry. This shows that our product will be a competitive product in the medical field has there are little substitutes for the SWB. 3.3 Customers and Thei r Needs The target customers are those who suffer from diabetes. Approximately over 225000 people in NZ are affected with diabetes. More people die of diabetes in NZ than any other disease. Many people who suffer from this disease fear of not remembering to take their insulin at the right time. This is particular in school children who dont have their parents around to know the symptoms. An estimated 4million worldwide people die from Diabetes. Diabetics want an easy to use solution to their problem so that they can carry on with their day to day lives. Another fear that diabetics have is passing out, or going into a coma state, when they are sleeping. Many customers have restless nights fearing the thought of their blood sugar levels becoming too low or too high. This affects their social life. 3.4 The Product and Servi ce We will provide a convenient product that allows diabetes patients to test their blood sugar and allow them to know when to take their insulin by sounding off an alarm. This product will be a band that goes around the wrist of the patient. The patient then has their blood sugar tested by a prick of blood which is then put through the blood screening system on the band. If a hypoglycaemic episode will occur an alarm will sound off, loud enough to wake the patient up from deep sleep. It will also alert emergency services such as St Johns. 3.5 Suppl i ers and Partners One supplier is Bluetooth manufacturers who will supply the raw materials to assemble the Smart Wrist Band. The raw materials of Bluetooth microchips will be placed in each system so that they can alert the emergency services. This is similar to the already made Rapid Response. Another supplier is of the band itself, as the band appears to be like a watch, so that specialises in watch cases/ formations for the devices and needle to go in. SRM is important to the business as we will focus on keeping the supplier satisfied by optimising supplier

4 selection. A potential partners is St Johns Ambulance Services. They will be a partner as they will help our customers who are having a hypoglycaemic episode. So high profits will be earned for the company as no other company has a product that will alert the emergency services if a hypoglycaemic episode occurs. Another potential partner is the government as they could provide funding for the device for patients that suffer from diabetes, which will help with the customers recognition system as it will become known as a product that is trusted by the government. 3.6 Strategy: Hi gh Focused Cost As our product is focused on diabetic patients, the product can only be used in a narrow market. The market size is approximately over 225000 people are affected with diabetes in NZ. The cost for the product will be quite high as this is a specialised product that has high costs to manufacture. So therefore we will have to charge a high price to the customers to buy the product The overall strategy is therefore Focused High Cost. 3.7 Val ue Chai n Acti vi ty: Service after the Sale The most important value chain activity for this business is Service after the Sale We are trying to provide a service from our product that will save lives so that there is a decrease worldwide of deaths by diabetes. Therefore we will have to maintain that our product will work well for the patient to process the data to their doctors and to also alert emergency services, seen in our strategy of being Focused High Cost, as we can focus on making sure diabetic patients risk of death decreases. Therefore a high cost will be established to make sure the patient has the best product. 3.8 Busi ness Processes 3.8.1. CUSTOMER SERVI CE PROCESS The companys vision statement provides guidance that the customer service process is a core process for the company. This is linked to porters value chain activity as we have addressed that service after sale is an important VCA for the company. Therefore customer service such as providing maintenance to the SWB to ensure that it continues to provide the service the SWB intends to do. The service of the device is too make sure that blood testing is on time and efficient the systems that it goes through must be thoroughly checked regularly to make sure that no mistakes happen.

3.8.2. SALES PROCESS Another business process that is significant to the company is the sales process. As the SWB is portable medical device, I believe that for the manufacturing of the good the government could provide funding. A large population of NZ can use the product. Therefore, the product should receive a grant so that the product can be provided to the patients at lower cost.

3.9 Functi onal i ti es 3.9.1. CUSTOMER SERVI CE PROCESS Management Information Systems (MIS), to manage the application of people, technologies and procedures in the company. Human Resources (HR), to research the governments policy for funding portable medical devices for diabetes. 3.9.2. SALES PROCESS Finance, deals with the strategic financial plans of the company, such as finding funding. Accounting, to provide the quantitative information about the finances of the company 3.10 Systems
3.10. 1. CUSTOMER/PARTNER COMMUNICATION SYSTEM Our product needs to be able to communicate with emergency services if a hypoglycaemic episode occurs. The mobility of the product allows activities to be performed where needed. It will provide immediate data to the emergency services and the patient. The quality and the efficiency of the information improve through the use of customer/partner communication system, through the management Information systems. The use of this system will be able to be used on a global scale. 3.10. 2. DATA ANALYSING SYSTEM Data analysing is an important system that converts the data diabetic symptoms into information that will sound off an alarm when the patient is at risk. Data analysing is important for the vision of the company as it means that we can provide a fast, efficient and convent product and service to the patient through analysing the data and recognising when the patient is a risk. This is a costly system so government funding, through finance functionally, is important to support the data analysing system. 3.10. 3. RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT SYSTEM -Research and development is another important system in the company as we want to be able to provide the best possible portable medical device for diabetes so that the patients can go on with their life worry free. This incorporates Human resources functionalities that are used for the system. The system also incorporates the accounting funtonctility as they can research the funding available for the company.

9 CONCLUSION To conclude, the SWB will benefit those who suffer from diabetes through the use of information systems in the company. These information systems and business processes are essential for the company to maintain their vision to provide diabetic patients worldwide with access to medical technology that allows for efficient, on-time and accurate monitoring to decrease the side-effects of psychological and physical problems in diabetic patients on a global scale. The SWB is in the Focused High Cost Strategy as the cost for the product is high, but as the company has a vision to save lives then we have a high value for the service after sale. Meeting these requirements through the information systems use we will reach our vision.
