2 GPS SPEED STOPPER INTRODUCTION In todays modern society within New Zealand we rely heavily on motor vehicles on our main source of transport. This makes accidents occuring on roads more often and easier than in the earlier years. It is said that during 2005, it was estimated to be about six cars for every 10 people thus making New Zealand on the top 3 for the highest rate of car ownership in the world - http://www.teara.govt.nz/en/cars-and-the-motor-industry. Majority of road accidents within New Zealand is caused by the issue of speeding as stated by - (National Center for Statistics and Analysis). Currently, New Zealand is using information systems by implementing speed cameras and social media by showing the impacts of speeding. However these methods do not eliminate the problem of speeding but rather give New Zealanders an insight around the reasons why they should avoid speeding. The GPS Speed Stopper is a GPS system which will be implemented into all New Zealand vehicles by law during their WoF checks and updated through regular WoF checks to ensure the GPS Speed Stopper holds all current roads and speed limits. Our proposed solution is better than ones currently implemented as it eliminates the problem of speeding. Although crashes will still occur due to travelling at the speed limit, the impact of the crash will be minimized as the vehicle will be travelling at the correct speed limit. 3. BUSINESS SECTION 3.1 Vision Our vision is to make our roads a more safer place to travel by utilizing the GPS Speed Stopper to significantly reduce the dangers of speeding. 3.2 Industry Analysis: Speed Law Enforcement Industry: Speed Law Enforcement. Our solution falls into the Speed Law Enforcement industry as it will be a law to have the GPS Speed Stopper implemented into New Zealand vehicles
3
3 Force: High/ Low: Justification: Buyer power: Low Buyer power for our solution is low as any regulations stated by law enforcement must be followed. Buyers do not have a choice to obey the speed limits or any other speed related laws stated by the speed law enforcement industry as their regulations are mandatory. For example, during holiday periods, legal speed limits are lowered for any period of time by the speed law enforcement industry without giving buyers a choice to obey their new laws. http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id =1&objectid=11162903 Supplier power: High Supplier power is high for our product as our solution requires advanced technology, therefore limits our supplier options down. Threat of new entrants: Low Threat of new entrants for our industry is low as there will be minimal/no possibilities for a new speed law enforcement to be operated within New Zealand. There needs to be only one speed law enforcement industry within one country. Threat of substitutes: Low Threat of substitutes for our solution is low as all previous attempts used so far has not eliminated speeding related crashes as stated by (http://www.nzta.govt.nz/resources/crash-analysis- reports/docs/auckland-2011.pdf) there is a high number of speed related crashes within New Zealand. With our solution needing highly advanced technology it will be strongly difficult for many companies to try and replicate or make a product similar to the GPS Speed Stopper Rivalry among existing competitors: Low Rivalry amongst existing companies is low/none since only one speed law enforcement industry is required within New Zealand
4
4 Overall attractiveness of the industry: Regardless of the current attempts implemented to stop speeding, the GPS Speed Stopper is effective as it stops the driver from being able to speed thus eliminating the issue of speeding. Therefore, our solution is better than current solutions implemented. 3.3 Customers and Thei r Needs WoF providers such as AA and VTNZ are potential customers for the GPS Speed Stopper. They will be responsible for installing the GPS Speed Stopper into all New Zealand vehicles and updating the database in order to ensure that the system is functioning correctly and updated. WoF providers must ensure that the vehicle which they are applying the WoF for must be up to standard and is within the safety regulations of New Zealand. The GPS Speed Stopper eliminates speeding thus making New Zealand roads safer and providing a safer country. 3.4 The Product and Service
The GPS Speed Stopper will eliminate speeding within New Zealand which is one of the major contributions to New Zealand deaths along with contributing to 31% of all fatal crashes (2007) stated by - http://www-nrd.nhtsa.dot.gov/Pubs/810998.pdf. Drivers will not be able to speed over the legal speed limit as the GPS Speed Stopper will track the vehicles location via satellite (normal function of a GPS). The GPS Speed Stopper will then decide if it is appropriate to gently apply the brakes to slow down the vehicle. This therefore will eliminate the problem of speeding 3.5 Suppliers and Partners Suppliers associating with the GPS Speed Stopper would likely be countries such as Japan as they are more technology advanced compared to New Zealand. http://www.thetoptens.com/high-tech-countries/. Since our solution is composed of technological components, it will only be achievable to create the GPS Speed Stopper in technology advanced countries. Partners that will be assoicated with the GPS Speed Stopper includes WoF suppliers as they will implement the GPS Speed Stopper in to New Zealand vehicles.
5
5 3.6 Strategy: Low Cost The installation and maintenance of the GPS Speed Stopper will be funded by the government as the GPS Speed Stopper will be a part of the New Zealand vehicle safety regulations. The main objective of our product is not to earn profit but rather to ensure that New Zealand roads are safer with the elimination of speeding. Our product has a broad market niche, as it will be implemented into all New Zealand vehicles. Since New Zealand is one of the highest countries in the world with car ownership this gives our product a broad market. The overall strategy is therefore Low Cost. 3.7 Value Chain Activity: Service
The most important value chain activity for the GPS Speed Stopper is Service, this is because the GPS Speed Stopper is a product focusing on ensuring that the problem of speeding is eliminated. To ensure that this service is provided at its full potential the GPS database will be updated to ensure the data of all the current roads and their speed limits are located on the database during the service of WoF. These updates are vital to ensure that the GPS Speed Stopper is operating effectively and fulfilling the purpose it was designed for.
3.8 Business Processes 3.8.1. GPS SPEED STOPPER PROCESS The operation of the GPS Speed Stopper is a vital process as it must follow a specific process. Once the vehicle has started, the GPS Speed Stopper will then start functioning. The GPS Speed Stopper will compare the speed of the vehicle is travelling in comparison to the legal speed limit of the current location via satellite. If the vehicle is travelling over the speed limit, the GPS Speed Stopper will then gently trigger the brakes thus slowing the vehicle down to the legal speed limit. This process is then repeated until the vehicle is turned off.
6
6 Start Turn on car to enable GPS system GPS receives information about the areas speed restrictions via satellite GPS receives information from vehicles computer system about the speed the vehicle is travelling at GPS compares the vehicles speed to the areas legal speed limit Is the vehicle travelling at or under the legal speed limit? Yes No Trigger brakes to slow down vehicle to the areas legal speed limit Repeat cycle until vehicle turns off End
7
7 3.8.2. GPS SPEED STOPPER UPDATE PROCESS To ensure that the GPS Speed Stopper is functioning effectively, it is necessary for the database chip of the GPS Speed Stopper to be updated during each WoF service. This is to ensure that the GPS Speed Stopper contains current roads and legal speed limits. The WoF provider will dispatch the database chip from the GPS Speed Stopper and insert it into a computer system. If the chip does not contain all current roads and legal speed limits, the WoF provider will then run the GPS Speed Stopper update software. One completed, the chip will be re-inserted into the GPS Speed Stopper.
8
8 Start Unplug chip containing road and speed limit data from GPS Speed Stopper Put GPS Speed Stopper database chip into a computer sysrtem Ensure all data within the database holds all current speed limits and roads Is the GPS Speed Stopper Database correct Yes No Commence updating software Place GPS Speed Stopper chip back into GPS Speed Stopper End
9
9 3.9 Functionalities 3.9.1. GPS SPEED STOPPER PROCESS GPS Speed Stopper will collect the legal speed limit of the vehicles location via satellite If the speed being travelled is over the speed limit, the GPS Speed Stopper will trigger the brakes to slow the vehicle down to the legal speed limit 3.9.2. GPS SPEED STOPPER UDATE PROCESS Remove database chip from GPS Speed Stopper and insert into computer system Commence update software if database does not hold all current roads and speed limits 3.10 Systems
3.10. 1. KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM Knowledge management systems is related to my solution as the GPS Speed Stopper compares the speed of the vehicle with the legal speed limit and then makes an effective decision to apply the brakes to slow down the car or not. Without this knowledge system, the GPS Speed Stopper would not know when to apply the brakes to slow the vehicle down. 3.10. 2. COLLABORATI ON SYSTEM Collaboration system is related to my solution as the GPS Seed Stopper contains a chip storing data of current roads and speed limits (IT-based set of tools). When the GPS Speed Stopper compares the speed the vehicle is travelling at and the legal speed limit of the location it will then work with other parts of the vehicle (braking system) if the vehicle is speeding. 3.10. 3. CONTENT MANAGEMENT SYSTEM Content managemt systems is related to my solution as the GPS Speed Stoppers database chip must be able to store all current roads and speed limits. The chip must be able to be edited/updated during each WoF to ensure it contains all roads and speed limits. The GPS Speed Stopper then collaborates with the brakes if the vehicle is driving over the legal speed limit.

12 CONCLUSION With such a high car ownership rate within New Zealand it emphaises on the high risks of car crashes from occuring on New Zealand roads. Speeding is a high contributer to the fatal crashes within New Zealand as stated by http://www-nrd.nhtsa.dot.gov/Pubs/810998.pdf. Methods such as speed cameras currently implemented within New Zealand is not an effective solution to stop speeding as they are operated in all locations and some drivers do not mind simply paying a fine. With the GPS Speed Stopper being implemented into cars it will eliminate the issue of speeding as the driver cannot drive over the speed limit thus making New Zealand roads safer and making our country safer overall REFERENCES
