The movie "Luther" is about a young man named Martin Luther who

promises God that he will be part of the Augustinian monastery if his life will
be spared when a bolt of lightning lands close to him. The film then narrates
Luther's movement to Rome and shows people buying indulgences for their
family, which is a practice that made the Catholic Church wealthy but badly
affecting the poor. Luther rebels against the Church by writing the 95 theses,
which he nails on the church door. The Church looks for Luther to make him
confess but Luther defends himself. He is then excommunicated and banned
by the Pope as well as his "exile" in the tower of the Wartburg Castle, where
he translated the New Testament into German. Luther's deep faith in what he
believes in shows him as a rebel and a leader.

The settings of this movie were well directed. By being able to make
the man of history to come to life in a real and deeply moving story is a
difficult job. I enjoyed watching this movie because for the first time, I was
able to understand what Luther did for the Catholic Church and how it must
have been difficult to stand up for one's belief. The movie helped highlight
the importance of how the Pope exiled Luther because they didn’t understand
Luther’s thinking and were afraid of the power he had over the people who
wanted a leader. His teachings were thought to be radical because he told
people to read the Bible, which most of the people back then did not so they
were not familiar with the Word of God. Overall, Luther’s message was to tell
people to read the Word of God so they know how to live and free them from
paying dead relatives to be freed from purgatory. Luther did not become a
monk in order to do this, but wanted people to read the Word of God.

Although the movie was a good movie to show to the class there were
however some gruesome scenes such as poor people dying and the horrible
images of the Peasants’ Revolt. Not only that, the movie had a lot of
discussions about the Church. The movie may have seemed so long because
of its detail that it covered a lot of the history but it would have been better if
more about his family life was added in.

For me, I liked the movie because I was able to learn more about
Luther and the Catholic Church; I was able to understand Luther’s situation
better because I am better at visualizing than reading worksheets on him.
Not only that, the film was detailed because it was about Martin Luther and
how God used him to change the Church. This movie should be shown to a
church group or for class room use.
