UNIT 2

1. What do you mean by the constants of an Overhead transmission line?

The constants of transmission line are resistance, inductance and capacitance which are
distributed through out the length of the line.
2. What is skin effect? On which factor it depends?
The tendency of ! to concentrate nearer to the surface of the conductor due to internal
inductance, it is known as skin effect.
"ffective area of the conductor is reduced and resistance is increased because of skin effect. #t
is not applicable to $!
%kin effect depends on the following fac&tors'
a( )ature of material
b( $iameter of conductor
c( *re+uency
d( %hape of wire, -ess for standard conductors than for solid conductors.
.. $raw the diagram of a double circuit three phase transmission line.
/. What is the necessity for a double line circuit
i( To transmit more power with a moderate additional cost
ii( To ensure continuity of supply incase of breakdown in one of the circuits due to fault.
iii( !ontinuity of supply cannot be maintained in single circuit if fault occurs.
0. What is meant by inductive interference?
i( The interference of power lines with neighboring communication lines is called inductive
interference.
ii( The interference occurs due to electro magnetic and electro static effects.
iii( The electro magnetic effects produce current distortion and electro static effects raises the
potential of the communication line as a whole.
&. $efine pro1imity effect and four facts on which it depends.
2i( This effect results in non, uniformity of current in a conductor cross section.
2ii( 3ro1imity effect affects the current distribution and results in an increase in resistance of the
conductor and decrease of self reactance.
$epends on' 2i( )ature of material 2ii( $iameter 2iii( *re+uency 2iv( %hape of wire.

4. What is meant by loop inductance of a line?
#t is the sum of the inductances of both the phase 2go conductor( and the neutral 2return(
conductor in a single phase system.

17. What is %tandard conductor?
standard conductor has a central wire and one or more layers of conductors over the
central wire, each layer is twisted in the sense opposite to that of the layer below 2the outside layer
being always right handed( in order to increase the mechanical strength of the conductor.
11. What is >undled conductor?
When a transmission line has 2 or more sub conductors per phase in close pro1imity
compared to the spacing between the phases, it is said to be bundled conductor. bundled
conductor consists of 2, . or / sub conductors. >undled conductors are used for high voltage lines

1.. What is transposition? Why is it done?
2i( When the conductors of . phase transmission line is not e+ual distant from each other,
2unsymmetrically spaced( the flu1 linkages and hence inductances of various phases are
different which causes une+ual voltage drops in the . phases and une+ual power transfer
between the phases.
2ii( #t is done to make the voltage drops in each phase e+ual.
1/. What is barrel in transposition of conductors?
One complete cycle of transposition is called barrel
10. %tate the advantages of bundled conductors
2i( 8educe the corona loss
2ii( Ainimise the inductive interference with communication lines.
2iii( 8educe circuit inductance which in turn improves stability margin and decreases the
voltage drop. This gives rise to increase in the circuit capacity and boost up the operating
voltage.
1&. What is the effect of bundled conductors on transmission inductance?
2i( >undled conductor reduces the transmission inductance.
2ii( The lower inductance leads to greater transmission capacity
